To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. Knnnsrns, a citizen of the United States, residing Pittsburgh, county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timing Apparatus for Use with Picture-ProjectingMachines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in timing apparatus, and more par,- ticularly to an electrically operated timing apparatus especially designed for use in connection with picture projecting machines, that is to say, motion picture or stereopticon machines, or a combination of a motion picture machine and a stereopticon machine.
The objects of my invention are, to provide simple and etlicient timing mechanism for machines of the character mentioned; a timing mechanism particularly applicable for use with a target, electrical circuits, and picture projecting machines in which the operations of the picture machines are to a certain extent controlled by means actuated by the discharge of a firearm.
In the present embodiment of my invention I show the invention employed in connectionwith two stereopticon machines, a target or b ck wall, and electrical circuits combined to effect, upon the impact of a bullet on a particular spot, change of pictures by cutting off the source light to one machine and temporarily lighting the other machine. In a companion application :iilec. by me on May 20, 191.9, Serial No. 2983206, I have shown the timing mechanism incorporated with a motion picture machine in which means are provided for stopping the movement of the picture film without stopping the other rapidly moving parts of the machine.
The'timing mechanism constituting my invention may be employed in combination with various types of motion picture and stereopticon machines and various forms or target apparatus.

As illustrated and as preferred, the timing mechanism includes a small electric motor 1 mounted on a base 2, the-latter being supported on a horizontally extending member 8 of a frame a Motor shaft 5 at its outer end is provided with a worm 6, said. worm being arranged to drive a rela tively large gear wheel 7 mounted on a shaft 8. Said wheel 7 is provided with a striking pin 9.
T he means shown for completing the circuit E to start the motor 1 .of the timing mechanism upon an impact of a bullet, include a horizontally movable arm 10, a pirotally supported arm 11, a pin 12 for securing arm 11 to arm 10, and a downwardly projected curved bar or element 13' movably supported from the frame 4; by a stub shaft 1%. 13 at its upper end is connected with arm 10 by means of a pin 15 passed through bar 13 and a slot 16 in arm 10; said bar 13 at its lower end being provided with an enlarged head portion 17.
Arm 11 is pivotally supported at its lower end on a pin 18 projecting outwardly from the frame 4, and said arm at its upper end is provided with a pin 19 adapted to operate in a slot 20 formed in a switch arm 21. Switch arm 21 is pivotally supported on a pin or shaft 23 and 24 designate electric switch contact elements respectively supported upon stop members 25 and 26. Said switch elements, it will beunderstood, coact with the contact plate 27 of switch arm 21 to make and break electric circuits, as hereinafter described.
Inter-posed between the arm 10 and the wheel 7 oi the timing mechanism I provide means for moving said arm 10 in a direction opposite to its movement, caused by the movement of bar 13 due to the im pact of the bullet, said means being adapted to coact with the striking pin 9 of wheel 7 only when the motor of the timing mechanism is running. shown, these means include a pivoted curved arm 28 having its upper end slotted at 29, said slotted portion being adapted to receive a pin 30 carried by arm 10, and an arm 31 secured to arm 28 having an end portion projecting into the path of travel of the striking pin 9. A lost motion mechanism is thus provided between the motor and, the switch, so that there is a delay in the actuation of the switch after the motor has been energized.
F designates the main line, the current of which is obtained from any suitable source. For controlling the speed of the motor and thereby the timing mechanism, I provide a regulator 32.
As shown by the diagrammatic view of Fig. 3, as well as the view of Fig. 1, the position of the parts shows the circuit G leading to the picture machine A closed, thus permitting a picture from the machine A to be projected on to the screen.
A bullet or projectile striking the head 17 or the bulls-eye will move the upper end of bar 18 to the left, which movement in turn will be imparted to arm 10, causing the upper end of arm 11 to move so as to throw the switch arm 21 and its contact plate 27 from contact 23 to contact 24, thereby completing the circuit E to the motor and simultaneously cutting olf the light to machine A and completing the circuit H to machine B. Completing the circuit to machine B changes the picture on the screen, and the period of time the second picture is projected on the screen is controlled by the timing mechanism.
It will, of course, be understood that starting the motor 1 of the timing mechanism drives wheel 7 carrying striking pin 9, and as said wheel is revolved, pin 9 will strike arm 31, causing arm 10 to be drawn in the opposite direction, thereby transferring the switch contact plate 27 from contact 24 to contact 23. This movement of the switch arm 21, of course, breaks the circuit to machine B and completes the circuit to machine A.
In apparatus of the class herein described and as above stated, the timing mechanism may be employed for controlling various electric circuits. In the present embodiment of my invention, I have shown a circuit I leading to means for actuating a screen or curtain employed in connection with moving picture machines or with stereopticon machines. As illustrated herein, 33
designates a switch arm having its lower end projecting into the path of the striking pin 9, said switch arm being adapted to be thrown to complete the circuit to the means for moving the curtain. Such means are shown in my companion application heretofore referred to.
WVhat I claim is 1. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with an interrupted electric circuit, a switch device in said circuit, a timing mechanism including an electric motor, manually controlled means for moving the switch to complete the circuit to the motor, and switch moving means interposed between the timing machine and the switch device and coacting with the timing mechanism for moving the switch to break the circuit to the motor.
2. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with an interrupted electric circuit, a switch device in said circuit, a timing mechanism including an electric motor, switch moving means adapted to be actuated by the impact of a bullet to complete the circuit to the motor, and switch moving means actuated by the timing mechanism to break the circuit to the motor.
3. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with an interrupted electric circuit, a switch device in said circuit, a timing mechanism including an electric motor, a revoluble wheel having a striking member carried therewith, and means interposed between the switch device and the timing mechanism and cooperating with the striking member for throwing the switch mechanism.
4. In apparatus of the character described, the combination with an interrupted electric circuit, a switch mechanism in said circuit, and a timing mechanism controlling the period of time of closing said circuit, said timing mechanism including an electric motor, and means interposed between the switch device and the motor for throwing the switch.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, two electrical circuits, a switch for closing one circuit at a time, an independently operable lever for moving the switch in one direction, a motor controlled by said movement of the switch for moving the switch in the opposite direction, and actuating means interposed between the switch and the motor and driven by the motor causing an appreciable interval of time to elapse between the independent operation of the switch and the return movement thereof.
6. In an apparatus of the character described, two electrical circuits, alternately operable devices controlled thereby, a switch for alternately opening one circuit and closing the other, means adapted to be actuated by manual control f0? moving the switch to one position, a motor for effecting the return movement thereof, means interposed between the motor and the switch and controlled by the motor through which motion is transmitted from the motor to the switch for effecting such return movement of the switch, said interposed means in cluding a lost motion mechanism for causing a certain interval of time to elapse be- 10 tween the first actuation of the switch and the return movement thereof, the operation of the motor being controlled by said switch.
