Application filed June 13, 1922!.` Serial No. 567,955.
citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles. in the county of Los Angeles and useful Improvements in Car Couplers` of which the following is a specification.
One object of my said invention is the provision in a car coupler of automatic type of simple and inexpensive means for assuring the coupler jaw assuming an open position when cars are moved apart, thereby assuring proper operation4 of the jaw and an ef-L fective coupling when cars come together and this in such manner as to obviate the necessity of a trainman going between cars in order to open or correctly position for coupling the jaw of the coupler.
Another object of the invention is the provision of improved means for the purpose indicated in the form of an attachment readily applicable to automatic couplers such as at present in general use.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the
invention consistsv in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificationz Figure 1 is a plan view showing as connected two couplers constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of one coupler with the jaw in open position.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a coupler as it appears with the jaw in closed position.
Figure 5 is a detail elevation showing the pin and spring comprised in my improvement.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary inverted plan.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding' parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Figure 1 clearly illustrates that couplers constructed in accordance with my invention are adapted to be connected together in the strong and safe manner common to automatic couplers.
My novel couplers are identical in construction and therefore a detailed description of the coupler shown in Figures 2 to 6 will suffice to impart a definite understanding of all. The coupler referred to includes a drawhead 1, a jaw 2, a pin 3 pivotally connecting the jaw 2 to the drawhead, and a CAB. COUPLES.
spring 4 for assuring movement of the'jaw 2` to the open position immediately followingthe raisingof the locking pin 5 of the coupler, and the drawing of two couplers apart. In the drawhead 1 is provided an opening 6, Figure 3, to receive the pin 3, and-at the underside of the drawhead 1 and surrounding the said opening 6 is a boss Y, immediately below which is a supplemental boss 8, Figures 3, 4 and 6, the said supplemental b oss 8 having radial grooves 9 which extend throughout its depth. Said supplemental boss 8 may be and preferably is inte-v gral with the boss 7. The jaw 2 is of con ventional configuration and is provided in one of its arms with an opening 10 to receive the pin 5, and in its other arm with an opening 11. The pin 3 is disposed in the drawhead 1, and is locked against turning in the drawhead through the medium of a cotte:` pin 12, best shown in Figures 3 and 6, which cotter pin extends through a diametrical aperture in the pin 3, and is seated in alined grooves 9 of the supplemental boss 8. The spring 4 is provided with an arm 13 which extends through an aperture in the upper portion of the pin 3, and in virtue of the said cotter pin l2 in combination with the grooved supplemental boss 8, the pin may be adjustably positioned and fixed so as to correctly tension the spring 4 as different conditions require. In addition to the terminal arm 13 the spring 4 includes convolutions 14, an arm 15 and a pendent loop 16 on said arm 15, the said pendent loop 16 being designed to be socketed in the jaw opening 1 1 as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. Manifestly when so socketed the loop 16 will be compressed, see dotted lines in Figure 3, and hence it will tend to retain itself by frictional Contact in the jaw 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing lbe readily embraced in couplers such as at present in use. I
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced inthe present andpreferred Vembodiment of my invention in order to impart a full,` clear and exaot .understanding of the said embodiment. I
do not desire, however', to be understood vas confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention varionsV changes and modifications may be made such as fall AWithin the scope of 'my invention las defined in my appended Claim. Having described my invention, what I claim and desi-re to secure by Letters'Patent, is n Incombination, a draw head formed with a vertical :pin receivingv opening, -a 'jaw member, a pivot pin extending through'an opening in the jaw member, and the pin receivi ing opening of the dravv head -forp'ivotally Connecting the jaw member thereto,- said draw headfbeing formed at 'one side with a plurality of fslots adjacent the pin receivf ing opening and extending. radial-lyY therefrom:j a Cotter pin extending. through the transverse opening in the pivot andV surface of the draw head,V and the other end' of said spring 'extending butward-ly 'from the coil and formed with 5a laterally" extend'-V ing terminal seatingin -an opening in the jaw member7 whereby the Cotter pin secures the pivot'pin against -a'xial movement infthe draw head, looks'the diametriealendportion Y of the springvin Ythe pin aga-instl the Lipper side ofthe draw head, V*and `is adaptedffor adjustment inthe radial slots 'to increase'or t decrease the tension ofthe spring for operatlngthe ]a\v"member tre.
