SURVEYING INSTRUMENT.
Application filed November 22, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHESTER P. MULLnns and VVARDIE G. Anoosr, citizens of the United States, residing at Taylorville, in the county of Christian and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surveying Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
I The-presentinvention relates to survey ing instruments, particularly useful in mining engineering work, the object being to provide an instrument that may be used in unlighted places, such as mine shafts and headings, by means of which certain desired points can be located and positions plotted.

In the embodiment disclosed, the general type of structure is somewhat on the order of a miners lamp, with certain important distinctions. A support is employed, comprising a bonnet 11, which may be of any suitable construction, as for example, an
outer perforatedcylindrical wall 12 housing a plurality of concentric safety screens 13, these screens carrying a'bottorn bearing ring 14. The bonnet is provided with a ring 15 that rests upon the ring 14, and a spring washer16, preferably transversely corrugated, is interposed between the rings 14 and 15. The ring 15hasdepending standards 17, the lower endsof which carry a supporting ring 18 that is internally threaded.
A lamp is employed, comprising a cylindrical casing 19 provided at its upper end witha threaded upstanding flange 20 that isadjustably screwed into the ring 18, so

that the said lamp can be rotated with respect to the supporting frame and bonnet. This lamp preferably is supplied with an acetylene gas generator and an oil font and burner. The gas generator is indicated at 21 and has a gas supply pipe 22 leading upward therefrom and terminating in a burner tip 23. A controlling valve 24 is placed in the pipe 22. This pipe 22, it will be noted, projects above a platform 25, forming the top of the casing 19. The oil font is shown at 26 and the wick tube and burner at 27, said wick tube and burner also projecting above the platform 25, which may be adjustable by any. suitable means. An igniter is shown at 28, and may be of the pyrophoric type. By reference to Figure 4, it will be noted that the burners 23 and 27 are in axial alinement.
Supported on the platform 25 of the casing 19 is a carrier ring 29 having a lug 30 adapted to engage in a socket 31 in the platform, so that said ring will be fixed with respect to the platform and casing, and consequent-ly will turn therewith. This ring is provided with openings 32 to permit the ingress of air to the burners, the openings being screened, as illustrated at 33. This carrier ring is provided with an internal annular shoulder 34, on which rests a sup porting ring and packing 35 supporting a globe 36. This globe has its upper end hearing against the ring 14. The carrier ring has mounted thereon, preferably inside the globe 36, an indicator in the form of an elongated plate 37 that is inclined to correspond to the inclination of the globe 36. This plate has a longitudinal slot 38 in which is a centrally disposed longitudinal hair or fine wire 39. Said slot and wire are in line with the two burners 23 and 27.
A compass 40 is, preferably mounted on the platform 25 within the globe 36. The carrier ring 29 is provided on its peripheral face with Vernier scale 41. while the upper face of the supporting ring 18 has a coweighted cords at which are preferably in line with the telescope but may be swung out of the way, as desired.
The bonnet includes a top wall 48 from which projects a central hanger hook 49 adapted to be engaged in a spad or eye 50 placed in the ceiling of the tunnel or mine shaft. Threaded through said wall 48 are positioning and holding screws 51, provided with abutment heads 52 and lock nuts These screws are on different sides of the hanger hook. The supporting member or bonnet is also provided with suitable levels as 53 preferably mounted on the ring 15, outside the bonnet casing 12.
In using this device, it is hung from the ceiling of a mine shaft or tunnel, as indicated in Figures 7 and 8, and is leveled and fixed by the screws 51. When so fixed, it will be evident that'the main supporting frame, including the bonnet, is held rigidly. The lamp may, however, be rotated in the ring 18 to any position with respect to the upper fixed supporting member. This being due to the threaded connection between the flange 20 of the lamp body and the ring 18,'a slight variation will of course take place, but this is taken care of by the spring washer 16 between the rings 14 and 15. When either the gas or oil flame is utilized, it will be evident that a vertical beam of light will pass through the slot 38 of the indicator 37 and the dark line caused by the wire 39 will divide this beam of light that will be thrown along the ceiling. The telescope may also be utilized for sighting and a line can thus be found along the ceiling where additional spads or eyes may be placed accurately at measured distances from the instrument. If right. angle or other angular positions are desired, for example, in laying off transverse headings,
and lateral cuts, the entire body of the lamp may be turned within the ring 18, and positioned by means of the vernier scales 41 and 42.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An instrument of the character set forth, comprising a support, a lamp rotatably mounted on the support, means for determining the position of the lamp with respect to the support, andmeans associated with the lamp for determining by means of the light projected therefrom a location beyond the instrument. 7
2. An instrument of the character set forth, comprising a support, means for suspending the support, means for adjustably lining the support against movement, a lamp rotatably mounted on the support, means for determining the position of the lamp with respect to the support, and means associated with the lamp for determining by means of the light projected therefrom a location beyond the instrument.
3. An instrument of the character set forth, comprising a support, a hanger for the support, adjusting and holding screws carried by the support and located at different sides of the hanger, a lamp rotatably mounted on the support, means for determining the position of the lamp with respect to the support, and means associated with the lamp for determining by means of the light projected therefrom a location beyond the instrument.

9. An instrument of the character set forth, comprising a support consisting of a safety bonnet, and a frame depending therefrom and including a supporting ring having a scale, a hanger at the top of the bonnet, adjustable positioning screws threaded on the bonnet on different sides of the hanger, a lamp rotatably mounted in the supporting ring and having a globe Within the frame, a carrier ring at the lower end of the globe having a scale that is cooperatively related to the scale of the ring, a positioning determining device in the carrier ring, said carrier ring and positioning device being rotatable with the lamp, a telescope at the bottom of the lamp and having its longitudinal axis in the vertical plane of the positioning device, level determining means on the support, and a compass on the lamp.
