Description
1.0. SCHWEIZER. Fire-Extinguishers.
Pa tented April 28, 1874.
j r Z; W
UNrrED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. SOHVVEIZER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,360, dated April 28, 1874; application filed March 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN (J. Scnwnrznn, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Fire- Extinguishing Water-Tank for Buildings, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of this invention relates to a water-tank to be placed "in the upper part of a building, or one in each story, or preferably a smaller one in each room, and so constructed and arranged that a stream of water may be taken from it through a hose to any part of the building for extinguishing a fire 5 or, if desired, by forcing water into the tank it will overflow into an inclosing tank, which will distribute it in numerous jets to extinguish a fire within reach of the jets.
Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modification in the form of three sides of a parallelogram, designed to be built into a wall around the head of a stairway, the perforated faces of the tank to be flush with the side walls of the. stairway. Fig. at is a crosssection of one wing of Fig. 3.
In the drawing, A represents a cylindrical tank, having a central flue, a, rising through it, through which may pass a steam-pipe to keep the tank from freezing up during severe cold weather. B is a sheet-metal tank inclosing the inner tank A, both rising from the same bottom, the outer tank being the taller of the two, and is provided with covers b I). 0 c are screw-couplings passing through the sides and top of the outer tank, to supply wa ter to the inner one from the hydraulic service pipes of the building. The inner tank should always be kept full of water. (I is a stopcock with a screw-nozzle on the outer end, for coupling a hose thereto, its inner end extending into the lower part of the inner tank. The lower half of the outer tank is perforated with numerous minute apertures, c.
In case of fire the water-supply is turned on, Y
and as the inner tank overflows, filling the annular space between it and the outer tank, the water will issue therefrom in fine jets through the apertures c and spray the vicinity to extinguish lire; or, if the fire be at a distance, water may be led to the spot where it is required through a hose.
As hereinbefore stated, Figs. 3 and 4 represent modifications of the tank adapted to protect a stairway.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The perforated tank 13, inclosing the inner tank A, of less height, the coupling 0, and stop-cock (I, all constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose specified.
' JOHN G. SOHWEIZER.
