N. HOLLAND COMBINED TAG AND SEAL Filed March 16, i922 hormsw In Ken/w;
Fatented Aug.5, 1924. I
NORMAN HOL AND, or. MONTREAL, QUEBEC, cANAnA. J
COMBINED TAG AND sEAL.
Application filed March 16, 1922. Serial No. 544,375.
To all whom it may concern." A
Be it known that I, NORMAN HOLLAND, residing in the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britian, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined Tags and Seals; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of the present invention is to before the combined closure and seal is provide a new and improved means whereby a manufacturer may attach to a container containing goods manufactured, prepared or packed by him a tag indicating and guaranteeing the condition and source of the contents.
A further object is to provide an attaching means which will perform the dual function of attaching the tag and sealing the container to which the tag is attached for the purpose of causing detachment of the tag when the seal is removed. To this end the invention consists of the construction, combination and particular arrangement of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
For full comprehension, however, of. my invention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts and wherein Figural 'is a fragmentary side elevation partly in section of a'container having my invention applied thereto; and t Figure 2 is a planiview thereof.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the application of my invention to a portable varnish can comprising a body portion 2 having a cylindrical spout 3 at its upper end the outer end of the spout terminating in a flared mouth 4. The latter is closed by my improved closure and seal to which a tag is attached. 'This combined closure and seal consists of a fiat thin disc 5 of comparatively soft metal extending across the mouth of the spout and having its circumferential edge spun over the continuous flared lip 6 of the spout in the form of a continuous flange 7 of curved cross section, the" flange and lip interlocking and providing an "air tight joint.
In order to provide means for facilitating the removal of this combined closure and seal and for attaching the tag thereto the flange 7 is provided with a radial projection 8 to which the tag 9. is secured by a wire link 10 passing through openings 11' and 12 in the A projection and tag respectively. The tag may be of any desired shape and bears the manufacturers guarantee indicating the condition and source of the contents. The can is indicated in Figure 2.
A cork13 may be inserted into the spout applied thereto. From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the com bined closure and seal is removed the tag will also be detached, and that owing to the mutilation of the interlocking flange and lip which occurs when the cover is torn off unscrupulous persons will be prevented from removing the contents of a container provided with invention and refilling the same with an inferior substance and placing the latter upon the market under the original tag and seal as the mutilated seal would clearly evidence the fact been tampered with.
What I, claim is as follows:
1. In a container the combination with a discharge spout having a flared mouth and a plug positioned within thespout and closing the same, the extreme outer end of the plug being disposed in transverse alignment with the flared mouth of the spout; of a combined closure and seal consisting of a flat thin disc of comparatively soft metal extending completely across the said mouth and completely covering the plug and having its entire periphery spun over the flared edge of the mouth; a radial projection upon said disc having an opening in its free end and a free en I 2. In a container the combination with a discharge spout having a flared mouth and a plug positioned within the spout and closing the same,the extreme outer end of.
the plug being disposed in transverse alignment with the flared mouth of the spout; of a combined closure and seal consisting of that it had guarantee device connected to said a flat thin disc of comparatively soft metal 7 extending completely across the said mouth and completely covering the plug and having its entire periphery spun over the flared edge of the mouth; a radial projection upon said disc having an opening in its free name to this specification in the presence of end; a guarantee device consisting of a tag two Witnesses.
having an opening therein and a wire link passed through the o'peninge in the tag and radial proje'cficn respectively and effecting a connection therebetween.
In testimony whereof I have signed my NORMAN HOLLAND.

HARRIETTE MQDONALD.
