PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS J. MEAGEER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DOOR HANGER.
Application filed November 2, 1922, Serial 1T0. 598,615. Renewed June 3, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Francis J. MEAGHER,
7 a citizen of the United States, residing in ports for sliding doors for elevators and like purposes, and the object of the invention is to provide a hanger of simple and economical construction which shall permit the door to hang closely, operate easily and noiselessly, be strong and durable, and readily installed.
A further object is to provide adjusting means whereby the door may be successfully hung and operated upon walls or casings having irregular surfaces or slightly out of the perpendicular without requiring prelimlnary Work in altering the wall surface.
Another important object is to provide means for inclosing the tracks and moving parts of the mechanism to exclude dust and abrading grit tending to undue wear, and also to provide means for preventing upward bucking movements of the door in its sliding travel. a
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangements of parts by which the above and other obj ects are attained, to be hereinafter described and'claimed.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show an approved form of the invention.
Figure 1 -is an end view of the improved hanger and a portion of a door suspended thereby, showing the relation of the door to the adjacent wall.
Figure 2 is a correspondin front view, partly in vertical section an also broken away to show certain interior portions.
Figures 3, 4 and 5 are vertical transverse sections through the hanger, on a larger scale, taken on the lines 3-3, 4-4, and 5-5 respectively in Figure 2.
Similar reference numerals indicatr the same parts in all the figural The door is marked 10 and the adjacent wall or door casing is marked 11. Upon the casing above the line of the door-opening is a series of outwardly projecting brackets 12 which support the hanger by bolts 13 extending through the upper face or deck of a hollow lhousing formed of heavy'sheet metal to a rectangular box-like cross-section, having a longitudinally centrally located open slot 15 in its bottom extending its entire length.
The heads 16 of the bolts 13 lie beneath the upper face or deck 14: of the housing and the bolts extend through slots 17 in the horizontal arms of the brackets 12, thus permitting the housing to beadjusted toward or from the wall or casing 11 as may be required.
Beneath the deck 14 and receiving the heads 16 of the bolts 13 is a channel-iron or longitudinally extending trough 18 set with its upwardly projecting flanges in contact with the inner face of such deck and is secured thereto by slitting the bottom of the trough at the ends along the junctions with the flanges and bending upwardly the tongues 19 thus formed and securing them to the deck 14 by rivets as at 20. The width of the channel or trough is such as to receive and engage the heads 16 of'the bolts 13 and hold the latter against turning when the nuts 21 are turned.
The sides 22 of the housing extend downwardly and terminate in flanges 23 turned inwardly to form the margins of the slot 15, and 24 are tracks of rectangular section received in and reinforcing the angles formed at the junctions of the flanges with the sides. The tracks are joined to the housing by rivets 25 extending through the sides 22, and the upper face of each is provided with a shallow groove 26 serving as a raceway for a series of antifriction balls 27 running on each track, equidistant from the centre line of the slot 15.
A movable rail extending longitudinally of the housing and inclosed therein, is suported on the balls 27 and carries the door.
he rail is of Y-section, preferably in two like parts joined togethe' as shown, to!
a single narrow base portion 28 projecting downwardly through the slot 15, and two outwardly curved flanges or Wings 2!) shaped to match the curvature of the balls 27 and ride thereon. I
On the outer face of the projecting portion of the base 28 are riveted straps 30 having lugs 31 receiving bolts 32 extending therethrough and through the cars 33 of a depending yoke 34 which receives a vertical bolt 35 secured to the upper edge of the.
the housing.
In the central angular groove 38 formed by the oppositely curved wings 29 of the rail-head, is a series of balls 39 seated in the raceway thus formed, with their upper faces in rollin contact with the under face of the troug 18, thus holding the rail against upward movement and insuring smooth noiseless operation of the door in its opening and closing movements.
A transverse pin 40 joining the sides 22 of the housing at their outer ends serves as a stop to limit the opening movement of the door. The closing movement may be limited by similar or any approved latching means, not shown.
The balls in the three series 39, 27 and 27 are held in the proper spaced relation by a ball carrier comprising a freely moving plate 41 having angularly arranged downwardly projecting flanges or ribs 42, with spaced openings 43 along the centre line of the plate 41 to receive the balls 39, and openings 44 in the ribs 42 to receive the balls 27 which also support the carrier. The openings are formed with ears 45 aiding to hold the balls in position.
Thus constructed and arranged the parts are strong and durable. The door is suspended on two balanced series of balls v running on easily and accurately levelled tracks, with the strains of suspension so disposed as to avoid any tendency of the tracks to spread, and the upper series of balls 39 prevents lifting or jumping in the opening and closing operations. The slot 15 through which the base of the rail protrudes may be very narrow, and all the parts subjected to wear are inclosed within the housing and thus protected. The vertical and trans verse adjustments afforded by the slots in the brackets 12 and yoke 3 4. permit the door to be so hung as to serve successfully on walls or casings having irregular surfaces or inexactly plumbed.
I claim 1. In a door hanger, a housing having a slot in its bottom, a track within the housing upon opposite sides of said slot, a rail of substantially Y-section with its' lower portion extended through said slot, balls interposed between theout-turned ortions of said rail and said tracks, an means brid ing said out-turned portions and haying epending portions serving to retain said balls in place.
2. In a door-hanger, a housing comprising a deck, sides and bottom and having a longitudinally extending slot in said bottom formed by inwardly projecting flan es on said sides, tracks mounted in the ang es formed by said sides and flanges and each having a raceway in its upper ace, a series of balls in each raceway, a rail inclosed in said housing and projecting through said slot and having win riding on said balls, a channel-iron on t e under face of said deck, said rail having a centrall located raceway, a series of balls in the atter between said rail and channel-iron, bolts extending through said deck with their heads inclosed in and held by said. channel-iron, means coacting with said bolts for securing said housing to a wall, and means for suspending a door from said rail.
3. In a door hanger, a housing having a slot in its bottom, a track within the housing upon opposite sides of said slot, a rail of substantially Y-section with its lower portion extended through said slot, balls interposed between the out-turned portions of said rail and said tracks, and means bridging said out-turned portions and having depending portions serving to retain said balls in place, said bridging means having .said housing and projecting through said slot and having outwardl curved wings matching the contour of said balls and riding thereon, a raceway formed by the angular groove between said wings, a series of balls in such groove between said rail and deck, means for securing said housing to a wall, and means for suspending a door from said rail.
5. In a door-hanger, a housin comprising a deck, sides and bottom an having a longitudinally extending slot in said bottom formed by inwardly projecting flanges on said sides, tracks mounted in the angles formed by said sides and flanges and each having a raceway in its upper face, a series of balls in each raceway, a rail inclosed in said housing and projecting through said slot and having outwardl curved wings said rail, and a ball carrier above said rail matching the contour of said balls and ridand partially inclosing said win and having thereon, a raceway formed by the ing spaced openings receiving 1; e balls of 10 angular groove between said wings, a series each series.
6 of balls in such roove between said rail In testimon that I claim the invention and deck, means or securing said housing above set fort I afiix my si ature. to a wall, means for suspending a door from FRANCIS J. AGHER.
