C(JN S'IA NCE DULAK, OF WEST, TEXAS.
I MOUNT FOR WIND-MILLS.
. Application filed October 22, 1923. Serial No. 670,118.
" 1 '0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CoNsTANon DULAK, a citizen vof the United States, and resident of 'West, inthe county of McLennan and State of Texas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Mounts for and durable, relatively cheap and easy to produce, that occupies a minimum amount of; space, and that, while capable of being erected in theopen, is particularly adapted to be erected within a building, such as a barn, in which case it is extended through an opening in the roof and its base secured tothe floor, whereby it is reinforced by the building and at the same time disposed in convenient. position to furnish power to various machines that may be located therein. Furthermore, simple and efficient provision is made for mounting. a windmill proper on the column, so that it may turn in harmony with variations in the direction of the wind, and by my improved arrangement of operating parts, the latter are to a major extent housed within and thereby protected by the column.
To the end of accomplishing the fore going purposes and advantages, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in' the accompanying drawings and particularly defined in the appended claims. v v
In the drawings, the figure is a vertical 'section of a mount for windmills embodying the novel and essential features of my invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
the flanged lower end of a sleeve 14 that is slipped down over the column and rotatably engaged therewith. The upper end of the column extends somewhat above the upperendof the sleeve and has mounted thereon a cap 15 between the lower flanged end of which and the upper flanged end of, the
sleeve are arranged balls 16 providing an antl-friction bearing acting to prevent upward movement of the sleeve with respect;
to the column. The cap is detachable from the column whereby the sleevemay be removedwwhen desired, however, and in addi--. tion, it is provided with central opening forming a bearing for the upper end of a shaft 17 that extends downward into the column and is supported at its lower end by balls 18 disposed within a cup-like member 19 secured within the column. I
Extending upwardly, from opposite sides of the sleeve 14 is a pair of arms 20, 20 which terminate in alined bearings 21, 21
having a horizontally disposed shaft 22 journaled therein. On one end of this shaft is secured a wind wheel of conventional, or any preferred type, while also secured thereon, between the arms 20, 20, is a bevel gear 24 that meshes with a similar gear 25 carried by the upper end of shaft 17. By this arrangement, it thus is apparent that when the wind wheel 24 turns, rotation will be imparted through the shaft 22 and gears 24 and 25 to the shaft 17, and due to the connection of the sleeve 14: with the column 10, it also will be apparent that the wheel may swing about the axis of the column, thereby to accommodate itself to variations in the direction of the wind, in which latter connection it will be observed that the wheel is disposed outwardly with respect to one arm 20 and that the other arm is equipped with a suitable vane 26.
Secured to the shaft 17 near its lower end is a bevel gear 27 that meshes with a similar gear 28 on the inner end of a horizontally disposed shaft 29 which latter finds bearing at its outer end in a pedestal 30 and near its inner end is journaled in a lateral extension 31 of a collar 32 that is secured in embracing relation to the column 10, thereby to rein force the latter at the point where an opening 33 is formed therein to accommodate the gear 28 and its aforesaid shaft 29. By this arrangement, rotary motion of the shaft 17 obviously will be imparted to the shaft 29,
and in order that power may be taken from this shaft for driving purposes, the same is equipped with a series of belt pulleys From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that the simplicity,
' strength, durability, compact arrangement and the adaptability of the mount for erection within building will be readily appreciated, as will the benefits derived as a result of the specific constructions set forth and of utilizing the column as a housing for certain of the operating parts.
Various changes and desirable additions may be made in and to my invention within its scope and spirit as defined in the appended claims.
I claim l. A mount for windmills comprising a tubular column, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said column, a cap detachably secured on one end of said column and acting to retain said sleeve in assembly therewith, arms extending from said sleeve, a shaft journaled in said arms, a wind wheel on said shaft, a second shaftextending into the column, intermeshing gears on said shafts respectively, said second mentioned shaft having bearing near one end in said cap and at its other end being supported within the column, and means for ransmitting power from said second shaft exteriorly of the column from a point on said shaft within the column,
2. A mount for windmills comprising a tubular column, a sleeve rotatably mounted on said column, a cap detachably, secured to the column and acting to retain said sleeve in assembly therewith, arms extending from said sleeve, a shaft journaled in said arms, a wind wheel on said shaft, a second shaft extending into the column, a driving connection between said shafts, a bearing in said cap for one end of said second shaft, a cup member secured within the column and carrying a plurality of balls, the otheren'd of said second shaft being disposed within said cup member and resting on said balls, and a third shaft extending through the column and having driving connection with said second shaft.
3. A mount for Windmills comprising a tubular column, a shaft disposed within and: extending axially with respect to said column, a gear onsaid' shaft within the column, said column having an opening formed therein adjacent to said gear, asecond shaft extending through said opening, a: gear on said second shaft meshing with said-- first mentioned gear, a reinforcing collar secured in embracing relation to said column: and covering the opening therein, a bearing in said collar for said second shaft, a wind wheel carried by said column, and a driving connection between said wind wheel and the first mentioned shaft;
In testimony whereof I hereunto affixmy signature.
