HAND STAMP.
Application led September To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MoRRIs SHnRAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to printing devices and especially to such devices of the sortvcommonly known as hand stamps. The particular kind of stamp to which the present invention especially relates is that wherein printing members are carried in 4 a swinging head and adapted forcooperation with a platen to form printed impressions upon a sheet, the printing members being adjust-able so that the natureof the printing may be changed at selection.
The general object of the present invention is to afford certain improvements in the construction of stamps of thisV character with the purpose of facilitating the proper setting of the `printing, members with rapidity and accuracy.
A further ob `ect is the provision of a structure for facilitating the setting of printing members in a stamp so that the indicators may be read in the proper sequence in which the character will appear in the legend printed bythe device.
A further object of the inventionv is the provision of apparatus in which the foregoing objects may be accomplished in a stamp which is arranged to print upon the upper surface of a sheet disposed on the platen, so that the operator may properly place the desired portion of the sheet for reception of theprinting.
A fur-ther object is the provision of an improvedv indicating device wherebyV the position of; the ribbon with respect to the" ribbon feeding spools or shafts is presented to the attention of the operator.
A further purpose of the invention` is .the accomplishment vof the foregoing objectsin a mechanism which is positive in opera-tion and of simple, durable and sturdy constructionsothat it will havey a prolonged term-of serviceability. l
Other Vandffurtherobjects. of the invention will b e pointed out hereinafter, indicated in the appended claims orobvious to one skilled in the art from the present disclosure. Y j.
For the purpose of the present yapplica` 2 2 of Fig. l;
23, 1922. SerialNo. 589,981.
tion I have elected to disclose one form in which the invention may be'embodied,` but it is to be understood'that the same is here presented fork illustrative purpose only and -therefore that it is not to be accorded any Fig. 2 is a section on substantially line Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation on substantially line 3-3 of Fig. 2; p
Fig. 4 is a cross-section substantially on line 4.-4 of Fig. 3; 'Y
Fig. 5 is a detail in thenature of -a section substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. l;
' Fig. 6 is a detail in the nature of a bottom view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 5. Described generally, the present invention involves the employment of an oscillatoryV frame member upon which are mounted adjustable type carrying vmembers associated in such fashion that selected tvDeV may be collated atv the printing line by adjustment `of certain indicating members arranged eX- terorly of the housing inv-which the type members' are mounted. Associatedy withthe type-carryingKA members -is" suitablev ribbon feed mechanism wherebv an inkedribbon mav be fedacrossthe ktype presented vat the printing line in such relationship that when Vthe swinging Vframe is-.moved tov impacta suitably supported platen, the type n will print upon a sheet'V supportedU thereon, through the medium of the ribbon. Stamps of this type are employed'genera-lly in rail'- wayfticket offices, banking houses and other establishments where fit isA necessarvto set the type to pri-nt different figures or legends, not only from day to day,1biut` also frequently during a davincident to the salleof tickets. It Y is' important that this setting-be accomplished with speed and with'accurac'y,
Y whence arisesthe 'desirability .that the 'ine dicators-for the settingl means, whereby the position of thetype isd'eterminethbe ar-V ranged to read inthe normal order inwhic'hV characters will be printed. One Afeatrueof the' present invention is directed: particu1 larly to the obtaining of-that result,'and the Vto print.
nature of the construction Will be best understood by reference to the drawing in detail. In the drawings it will be understood that the numeral 1 designates a base member upon which a swinging frame member is pivotally mounted On a pintle 2, said frame carrying at its free end a housing 4L. A spring 5 normally holds the housing lifted in a position above a platen 6 which is carried on the base member 1. The housing is closed at the sides by side plates 7 which carry at their lower margins a type plate S upon which may be formed the permanent type characters which the stamp is designed This type plate is slotted to accommodate the movable type characters, the arrangement of which will now be eX- plained. In the left hand side plate 7 is journalled a sleeve 9 through which extends a substantial shaft 10 and to which shaft the sleeve is connected for rotation, as by the pin 11.. Keyed to the sleeve 9 is a type wheel 12 which has joined thereto the detent rwheel 1st having a toothed or serrated margin, said detent wheel being of less diameter than the type wheel. A detent guide disk 15 is joined to the detent wheel 14ton the side opposite the type wheel 12. The type wheel carries peripherally arranged type characters 16 which are arranged to be presente-d at the printing line in the slot of the type plate 8. At the end of the sleeve 9, on the shaft 10, is arranged a collar 17 which aty its other end abuts the end' of a sleeve 18 rotatably mounted on the shaft 10. The sleeve 18 in turn carries a rotatable collar 19 which is journalled in the right hand side frame 7 and which carries at its inner end, adjacent the side plate, a spur gear 20. Rotatabl-y mounted upon the sleeve 18 is a type wheel 21 having a detent Awheel 22 and guide'disk 24- iixed there to. Keyed to the sleeve 18 is a type wheel 25 having the conjoined detent wheel, 26. Between the type Wheel 25. and the type wheel 12 a` type wheel 27 with its conjoined detent wheel 28 are rotatably rmounted on the collar 17.
Jour-nailed in the right hand side plate 7 and a'bracket 29 depending from the top of the housing 4 is a shaft 30 carrying at its right hand end spur pinion 3'1 which meshes with the pinion 20, and at its left hand-end a setting gear 32which meshes with the detent wheel 28 of 'the type wheel 27. Mountednon the housing behind the shaft 10 are the restraining detents 34 which are pressed by springs 35 into engagement with the detent wheels 14, 28, 26 and 22,'the function of said detents being to restrain the type wheels with their type in proper align,- ment at the printing line. vOn the left hand end of the shaft 10 an indicator wheel 36 is mounted eXt-eriorlyaofthe casing, which indicator wheel bears legends corresponding to those carried on the type wheel 12. On the projecting end of the sleeve 19 an indicator wheel 37 is mounted exteriorly of the casing, which indicator `wheel bears on its periphery characters corresponding to those carried on the type wheel 27, and the right hand end of the sleeve 18 carries an indicator wheel 38 having on its periphery characters corresponding to the type characters on the type wheel 25. These respective indicator wheels are fixed to the respective members upon lwhich they are mounted'so that the latter may be rotated by manipulation of the indicator wheels as desired. Mounted on the exterior of the side plates 7 are guides 39 which are asso` ciated with the indicator wheels in such fashion as to designate the characters there on corresponding to those of the type wheels presented at the printing line.
In the operation of the mechanisn'i thus far described, adjust-ment of the type wheel 12, which I will designate the month wheel, is accomplished by rotation of the indicator wheel 3G, movement being transmitted therefrom to the month wheel through the instrumentality ol shaft 10 and sleeve 9. Adjustment of the type wheel 27, which l will designate the `tens wheel, is accomplished by manipulation of the indicator wheel 37, movement being transmitted therefrom through sleeve 19 and gears'20, 31 and 32 to the detent wheel 2S. Adjustment of the type wheel 25, which I will designate the units wheel, is accomplished by ymanipulation kof the indicator wheel 38, the movement being transmitted therefrom through the sleeve 18. I-Ience it will be Obvious that a desired legend may be ser `up on the printing line by manipulation of the indicator wheels, upon which indicator wheels the legends` may be read in the normal relationship in which they are associated on the printing line. Adjustment of the type wheel 21, which I will call the year type wheel, is accomplished by manipulation of that wheel directly, at the place where it is exposed on vthe printu ing line through the slot inthe type plate 8. In the ordinary vuse of a device of this character, particularly where it is employed as characters are vshown on the indicators in their normal order,y the possibility of improper setting is largely obviated.
It will be understood that the `inked ribtion Serial No. 451,512, filed March 11, 1921 is carried in the casing 4 for actuating the ribbon reels to Wind the ribbon off of one and onto the other. lSaid actuating means includes a pivote-d link 44 connected to the base member 1, through which movement is transmitted to the reel actuating mechanism upon oscillation of the sivin ging frame member. To permit the rapid reeling of the ribbon, the right hand ends of the reels are providedA with spur pinions which lie adjacent the right hand cover plate '7.` Journalled on thisV cover plate in meshing cooperation With the pinions 50 are the reeling pinions 51 Which are so disposed that portions of their peripheries extend through yslots in the casing 4 so as to be manually engageable eXteriorly thereof. By rotation of the proper reeling pinion 51 the reels may be rotated to Wind the ribbon onto either one.
Tnasmuch as the feed of the ribboin is accomplished automatically incident 'to operation of the stamp, means are provided for reversing the direction Vof feed of the ribbon when desired.V This means includes a manually adjustable knob 52. It is iniportant that the direction of feed of the ribbon be reversedbefore it is exhausted from a reel or before its connecting means are brought to a position Where they underlie the printing plate 8. In order to insure the attention of the operator being directed to the necessity for reversing the ribbon I have provided a novel indicating device so arranged as to'be at all times directly in the vision and under the attention of a person operating thestampl This" indicating device includes a plate 54 Which is mounted on the upper front portion of the housing 4 in covering relationship to anA to the pinion 59 is a ycrank 61 extendingl radially of the pinion' 59 and carrying a member 62 arranged for. operativeassociation With the ribbon reel 41. A springA 64 is mounted on the stud and exerts its pressure against the memberV 62 toY urge it` of the ribbon should be reversed. the simplicity of the construction 'and toV toward the ribbon` reel. As theribbon is Wound upon the reel, the increasing thickness thereof swings the member 62 away fronrthe reel, thereby actuating the pinion 59 through the instrumentality of thecrank 61, and rotating the pinion 58, so that the pointer 57 will be caused to travel across the face of the plate 54. The latter is provided With suitable indicating means 65 associated-With the pointed 58 for marking the limitsV at Which the direct-ion of feed of the ribbon should be reversed. This construction permits the disposal of the indicating pointer Where it will be observed by the operator everytime the stamp is used1 by virtue of which fact the likelihood of the ribbon being vvound entirely of of eithery reel is obviated to a large extent. i
F rom the foregoing vit will be observed that my invention effects material improvement in devices of this character by eliminating possibilities of error Vin the setting of the type Wheels, as Well as by facilitating the adjustment thereof, and that it also simplifies the mounting of ribbons in the machine and affords protection for the rib-- vbon and the type bygivin'g quite obvious indicated-as to when the direction of feed the strong support afforded the type Wheels by the shaft 10 and the sleeves carried there` on,`the device is extremelyjdurable and will retain its accuracy through a long period of the trying usage of Which-such devices customarilyare subjected.
