JOHN H. JONES, F SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
. PRINTERS STICK.
Application filed June 23, 1923. Serial No. 647,317.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. JoNns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sioux City, in the county of W'oodbury and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention contemplates a printers composition stick embodying certain novel 1 features of construction whereby the adjustable column wall, or knee, is readily ad ustable, yet positively secure, when locked, against any tendency to move or spring laterally.
A further object of the invention is the production of a printers composition stick embodying the above feature, which is thoroughly dependable and durable in use, yet comparatively inexpensive in construc- Ltion.
These and other objects and advantages I successfully attain in the embodiment hereinafter described, defined in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this applicavention.
tion and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, of which,
i Fig. 1 is a plan of a printers composition stick constructed in accordance with my in- Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan of the same with the cover of the detent guide removed.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary, horizontal section of one of the detents and associated parts taken on the line 66 of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of the guide detent and associated members taken on the line 77 of Fig. 5.
Referring now to the illustrations, the composition stick illustrated embodies the usual bottom or floor, 8, a rear flange, 9, and a fixed end flange, 10. Extending transversely across the floor of the stick is a guide member for two detent elements coacting with the racks on opposite sides of the stick. In the preferred embodiment the said guide member is a channeled plate, including a bottom, 11, and flanges, 12 and 13, the latter being deeper than its companion to serve as the adjustable knee, or column wall. Wlthin the channel slide oppositely-disposed detent bars, 14. One of said bars, 14, has a downwardly-extending part, 15, depend ing below the bottom of the stick and having a laterally toothed part, 16, engageable and disengageable with and from a rack, 17, on the bottom of the stick, 8, and adjacent the'unflanged edge thereof. The other of said detent bars, 14, is provided with an upwardly-extending part, 18, which is extended rearwardly to overhang the flange, 9, of the stock, and a rack, 19, secured to the outer side of the flange, 9, adjacent its upper edge,
the overhanging portion of the part, 18, bevT9 ing provided with a part, 20, which depends adjacent the outer side of the rack, 19, and is provided with teeth, 21, engageable and disengageable with and from said rack. The detent part, 20, is provided on its lower edge T: with a lip, 22, which slidably engages the under side of the rack, 19, and the opposite detent part, 15, is provided with a lip, 23, which slidably engages the under side of the adjacent rack. These lips serve to prevent upward displacement of the detent mechanism from the stick.
The adjacent end portions of the detent bars, 14, are slotted as at 24, to receive retracting spring, 25, having its ends seeured, respectively, to a cross bar, 26, in the notches, 24. Thus, the spring, 25, holds the detent members normally engaged with the racks. The detent guide body is covered by a plate, 27, resting upon and secured to the flange, 12, by a screw, 28, or otherwise. The detent members are controlled by suitable levers, 29, fulcrumed as at 30, on the detent body and having depending parts, 31, projecting through arcuate slots, 32, in the cover plate and into the notches, 11, of the respective detent bars, 14, by virtue of which construction it is clear that movement of the levers toward each other will disengage the detents from their associated racks and permit adjustment of the bar, 13, longitudinally of the stick.
To further insure rigidity of the device, the bottom, 11, of the detent guide body is provided with an extension plate, 33, which plate is provided with an upright flange, 34, slidably engaging the flange, 9, and formed at its upper edge with a U-shaped part, 35, which is hooked over the flange, 9, and the rack, 19.
lVhile I have illustrated and above described but one embodiment of the inven tion, I would not be understood as being limited to this specific construction, for it will be readily apparent that the device is susceptible of numerous modifications and alterations in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scopeof the invention as defined in the appended claims.
1. A printers stick embodying a floor having flanged and unfl'anged edges, a rack on the outer side of the flange, a second rack on the underside of the floor adjacent the uniianged edge thereof, a. block mounted upon and movable longitudinally of the floor, a knee carried by the block, toothed detent bars slidably supported by the block and movable toward and from each other to accordingly engage and disengage their teeth from the racks, and levers ful'crumed on the block for the control of the detent bars.
2. A printers stick embodying a floor having flanged andiuifi'anged edges, a rack on the outer side of the flange, second rack on the underside of the floor adjacent the unl'langed edge thereof, a block mounted upon and movable longitudinally of the floor, a knee carried by the block, toothed detent bars slidably supported by the block and movable toward and from each other to accordingly engage and disengage their teeth from the racks, a yieldable link between the bars holding them normally en gaged with the racks, and levers iulcrulned on the block for disengaging the bars from the racks.
8. A printers stick embodying a floor hav ng flanged and unflanged' edges, a rack on the outer side of the flange, a second rackf on the underside of the floor adjacent th unfianged edge thereof, a channeled bodyf disposed transversely of and upon, n movable longitudinally of the floor, one flange thereof serving as the knee ofthe stick, detent bars within the channelfone thereof having a U-shaped part receiving the flange of the stick and its rack and provided with teeth engageable and disengageable with and from the associated rack, and the other thereof having a depending toothed part engageable and disengageable with and from the other rack, and means for controlling the detent bars.
A printers stick embodying a floor having flanged and unfianged edges, a rack on the outer side of the flange, a second rack on the underside of the floor adjacent the unfla'nged edge thereof, a channeled body disposed transversely of and upon, and movable longitudinally of the Floor, one flange thereof serving as the knee of the stick, detent bars within the channel, one thereof having a U-shaped part receiving the flange of the stick and its rack and provided with teeth engageable and disengageable with and from the associated rack, and the other thereof having a depending toothed part engageabl'e and disengageable with and from the other rack, and finger levers fulcrumed on said'body and operatively connected with the detent bars to disengage said detent bars from the racks.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of June, 1923..
JOHN H. JONES.
