Description

D. N. COBDiNG.
Muiders Drawing-Screws.
Patented April 28,1874.
WW www @Q1/MMM 'L if UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DAVID N. GODDING, OF NEPONSET, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDERS DRAWING-SCREWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,291, dated April 28, 1874 application filed March 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DAVID N. OODDING, of Neponset, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Im provements in Drawing-Screws for Removing Patterns from Molds and for other purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyin gdrawin gs makin g part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved drawing-screw. Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections through the same; Fig. 4, detail in perspective.
Heretofore it has been customary to remove patterns from molds by means of a screw having its handle permanently attached thereto. This screw, by continued contact with the sand collected in the screw-holes previously formed, soon becomes worn out, and the entire tool is rendered uniit for4 further use.
To avoid the loss of the handle of the screw, and to utilize it for anyr number of screws, is the object of my invention, which consists in a handle so constructed as to admit of a screw being readily removed when worn out and a new one substituted therefor, whereby the same handle can be used for any desired lengt of time.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents a handle made in the form of a loop for the entrance of the ngers therein. Within the lower ond of this handle is formed a female screw-thread, c, for the `reception of a male thread, b, cut on the outside of a cylindrical thimble, c, through the center of which is form ed a circular opening for the passage of an ordinary wood-screw, (l, the upper end of the thimble being reamed out to form a cavity of a size and shape correby which it is prevented from turning indepen dently of the handle.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the screw d becomes worn out from contact with the sand it can be readily removed by unscrewing the thimble-and a new screw substituted therefor, thus enabling me to use the handle for any desired length of time.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The handle A, with its projection 7L and screw-thread c, in combination with the thimble o and screw d, constructed and operating substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 18th day of March, A. D. 1874.
DAVID N. GODDING.
