Description

July 22 1924. 1,502,523
N. W. PEEK FOOT ACCELERATOR Filed Oct. 7, 1922 Patented duly 22, 1924.
NORMAN W. PEEK, OF MILVIAUKEE, XVISCONSIN.
FOOT ACCELERATOR.
Application filed October 7, 1922. Serial No. 593,044.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN W. PEEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at 528 Bellevue Place, Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot Accelerators, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to foot accelerator for use in controlling the throttle valve of automobiles, and the object is to provide a foot operated accelerator of such a nature that the customary strain on the leg and foot of the driver is eliminated. A further object is providing a device which will be operated by lateral movements of the foot, and one which may be operated positively to close as well as to open the throttle valve. A further object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and which may be quickly installed in any automobile. Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof, and in the claims.
In the drawings which illustrate the application of my invention in one form,
Figure 1, is a perspective view of the accelerator mounted upon the toe-board of an automobile.
Figure 2, is side elevation view of the accelerator.
Mounted upon the toe-board l of the automobile is a wedge shaped block 2, in which is a transverse slot 3. Seated upon the block 2 is a foot operated block at, having an upper horizontal surface 5., upon which the foot of the operator rests, side projections 6 and 7 being provided to prevent the foot from slipping off of the block 4. Projecting downwardly from the block 4. and integral therewith is a tongue 8, which is guided in the slot 3 of the wedge shaped block 2. Tongue 8 is pivotally con nected to a rod 9 which extends downwardly and laterally and is connected by means of a suitable ball and socket connection 1O. to a rod 11, mounted upon a cross shaft 12. Cross shaft 12 is mounted in suitable brackets 13 below the toe-board of the automobile, and is provided with an arm 14, which is connected in any suitable manner to the throttle valve of the carburetor. A comparatively light spring 15 is connected torod 9 at one end, and at the other end is connected to the under surface of the toeboard of the machine, and serves to maintain the foot piece at its upper and left hand position, which corresponds to the closed position of the throttle valve.
It will be seen that the foot piece is operated by a side-wise movement of the foot to open or close the throttle valve. The
foot piece will move downwardly and to piece to move laterally.
If desired. the foot piece 5 may be moved over to its right hand position, and the spring 15 will elevate the same if there is no downward pressure exerted by the, foot, and the block 5 may then be operated by vertical pressure of the foot so as to move the same up and down in order to control the throttle in the customary manner.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a foot operated member for operating a part to be controlled, adapted to be moved by a foot of the operator, and means for guiding and supporting said member so that the same moves in a laterally inclined plane.
2-. A foot operated device of the class described, comprising a foot operated member for operating a part to be controlled, means for guiding said member so that the same moves laterally in an inclined plane, whereby a substantial part of the weight of the foot may be rested on the foot operated member without operation of the part controlled.
7 3. in a foot accelerator for motor vehicles, a fool piece for operating the carburetor control, means connecting said foot piece to the carburetor control, a wedge shaped lock. adapted to be mounted on the toe board of the motor vehicle, and to supportsaid foot: piece, and guide means formed in said block for guiding the foot piece in a substantially lateral direction.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
NORMAN W. PEEK.
