Application filed August 16, 1922. Serial no.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL S. MARCUS and SAMUEL KRAKAUER, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx andState of New York, have invented a new and Improved Covered Spring Structure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has relation to covered spring structures and has particular reference to cushion seat or bed spring structures which include a plurality of coiled springs placed side by side to form a resilient element.
As an object the invention contemplates in a covered spring structure, means for maintaining the individual spring elements under compression, said means also servii'ig to insulate the convolutions of said elements from each other to prevent clashing or knocking of the same against the convolutions of contiguous elements.
As a further object the invention contemplates means for holding the spring ele ments under compression which also serves as means for holding the individual spring elements in contiguous relation and for eliminating the release of the same from their initial or normal compression in event of the breakage or displacement of the holding clips.
As a further object the invention contemplates a simple and effective means for associatingthe individual elements of a spring seat structure, which means renders the manufacture and production inexpensive as well as strong and durable.
'VVith the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction set forth in the following speci fication, particularly pointed out in the ap-- pended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated by the general meaning of the terms in which the claims are expressed.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a spring structure embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. V
Fig. 3 is a transverse f agment ry secarranged contiguous to each other to make up a spring structure'to be employed as a bed spring, or cushion seat structure. It has been definitely established that cushion springs when l'rept'under compression are superior inaction to thosethat are not so kept, and't-he inventiontherefore relates to the means for connecting the springs 10 to each other and the manner in whichv the same are held under an initial or normal compression. As illustrated a strip of fie ible material 11 is connected at one extremity by means of a clip12- to the upper end convolution of one of the springs 10 and is then passed downwardly toward the opposite end and under the same where it is secured at diametrically opposite points by the clips 12 to the lower end convolution of said spring 10. The strip is then alternately threaded upwardly and over the upper end convolutions and downwardly and under the lowerend convolutions of the adjacent springs 10 in a substantially sinuous path. At each point of change of direction of the strip. the same is secured by one of the clips 12 to the spring convolution with which it engages. The contiguous convolutions of adjacent springs 10 are retained in juxtaposition by means of the clip 12 which attaches the strip to the spring. In the next adjacent row of springs, the strip is alternately threaded over and under the spring sections in a substantially sinuous course or path as illustrated, and in attaching the contiguous upper and lower convolutions of the spring sections of adjacent rows a strip 13 is connected at its upper and lower ends respectively to the convolutions of the spring sections of the adjacent rows by means of the clips 12 which attach the rows together. This construction interposes what may be termed an insulating strip between the convolutions to prevent clashing or interference f the intermediate convolutions with each other when weight is brought to bear on the structure. The sinuous arrangement of the strips 11 interposes between the contiguous spring sections 10 of each row an insulating portion for a like purpose and said sinuous threading of the strip serves to hold the springs under the/initial or nor mal compression even though one or more of the clips 12 should be broken or detached.
We claim:
1. In combination, a covered spring structure embodying a plurality of rows of contiguous spring sections, and a common means for holding the same under partial compression and for insulating the convolutions thereof from each other, comprising a strip of flexible material connected at one extremity to one of the end convolutions of an end spring section and passed alternately under and over the spring sections of each row, and means for securing the strips at diametrically opposite points to the end convolutions. 7
2. In combination, a covered spring structure embodying a plurality of rows of contiguous spring sections, and a common means for holding the same-under partial compression and for insulating the convolutions thereof from each other, comprising a strip of flexible material connected at one extremity to one of the end convolutions of an end spring section and passed alternately under and over the spring sections of each row, and means for securing the strips at diametrically opposite points to the end convolutions, said means of securement serving to also connect the spring sections in contig uous relation.
3. In combination, acovered spring structure embodying a plurality of rows of contiguous spring sections and a common means for holding the sameunder partial compression and for insulating the convolutions thereof from each other, comprising a strip of flexible material connected at its opposite ends respectively to an end convolution of the end spring and alternately passed under and over the intermediate spring sections of each row, and means for securing the intermediate portions of the strip to the end convolutions respectively at its points of contact therewith.
l. In combination, a covered spring structure embodying a plurality of rows of contiguous spring sections and a common means for holding the same under partial compres sion and for insulating the convolutions thereof from each other, comprising a strip of flexible material connected at its opposite ends respectively to an end convolution of the end spring and alternately passed under and over the intermediate spring sections of each row, means for securing the intermediate portions of the strip tothe end convolutions respectively at its points of contact therewith, and means for connecting the contiguous points of the end convolutions of the spring sections of the adjacent rows and for insulating the convolutions thereof comprising a single vertical strip of a length approximately equal to the height of a spring section and passing between adjacent spring sections, the upper end of said strip being connected to adjacent parts of the contiguous upper convolutions and the lower end being connected to adjacent parts of the lower contiguous convolutions.
