H If. S ATES DUNCAN MACKENZIE ANDERSON, 0F TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SHAVING BRUSH.
Application filed January 25, 1923/ Serial No. 614,799.
T 0 all whom it may concern" Be it known that I, DUNCAN MAOKENZIE ANDERSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Toronto, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is directed to' shaving brushes of the class used for lathering the face before or during shaving; and my improvements are directed particularly to means whereby the bundles of bristles assembled in the brush may be separated from each other and opened out, so that they may be thoroughly washed and cleansed toremove accumulations of lather, soap, hair, particles of cuticle, and the like, which accumulate within the brush during use; the brush also being so constructed that it may be thoroughly sterilized, as by boiling, without injurious effect on its parts.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is an elevation of my improvedbrush; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3'is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking down; Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken as on the line H of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view showing the bristle holders spread out radially from their central support to permit cleansing; and Fig. 6 is a side view on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view, also on an enlarged scale, of one of the bristle holders.
Similar parts are designated by similar reference numerals in all the figures.
The body 1 of the brush is preferably formed of light non-corrodible metal. It consists essentially of a tube having a central bore 2, flaring toward one end of the handle; the handle being provided with a cap 3 adapted to seat itself over and close the other end of the handle.
Through a radially slotted. disk 4, which may be made of two pieces with a pivot receiving groove between them, is passed a shank 5, having a collar 6 below the disk,
and being threaded above the disk to receive a keeper nut 7, the shank being also threaded into the cap 3 so that when the cap is screwed down on the shank, the disk 4 fits snugly into the tapered bore of the handle and the cap and disk are both held firmly in proper position. The other end of the shank is prolonged and is provided with an enlargement 8, which serves to fill the space between the series of bristle holders 9, 9, which are held pivotally in the radial slots of the disk 4, as by a pivot wire 10, or other suitable means.
In these bristle holders 9, 9, are mounted the bristles 11, 11, preferably by being looped around a keeper wire as 12, the sides of the holder being then closed together and secured to each other as by soldering, so
and cannot drop out of the holder, unless they are broken free from the keeper wire.
When the bristle holders are swung into their bunched position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, spaces are left between them which are not filled by the bodies of the holders. These spaces are preferably closed by suitable elements such as 13, 13, attached laterally to the bristle holders, and adapted with them, and the enlargement 8, to snugly close the end of the handle 1 into which the brush is inserted.
WVhen, therefore, the brush is assembled, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one end of the handle will be securely closed by the cap 3, and the other end will be closed by the enlargemen't 8, bristle holders 9, 9 and their extensions 13, 13, so as practically to exclude lather and foreign substances from the interior of the brush handle. The brush, when so assembled, can be used like an ordinary shaving brush.
When it is desired to cleanse the brush, the cap 3 is screwed ofl, and the shank 5, carrying with it the bristle holders, is pushed out of the tapered bore of the handle. The bristle holders may then be spread out laterally, as illustrated in Fig. 5, and subjected to a thorough washing and cleaning, and then readily dried of free moisture by the use of a towel. For it will be seen that when spread out, the bristle holders may rest conveniently upon a towel held in the hand, while the upper sides are wi ed and dried, the holders and their attac ed parts being reversed in position and moved about so that all their surfaces can be reached in the cleaning and drying operations.
Obviously the interior of the handle may be thoroughly cleansed; and the brush, when disassembled, may be optionally subjected to heat or other sterilizing influences.
By the use of my invention I am enabled to eliminate the danger of contamination that the bristles are securely-held in place due to the accumulation of germ carrying matter within the body of the brush; and .to provide the user with a brush, which can, with ordinary care, be kept in a thoroughly sanitary condition.
The detachable character of the brush elements makes my device peculiarly adapted for use in barber shops, where the brush can be thoroughly cleansed and sterilized, as by passing it through boiling water, after each time it is used, a number of brush elements being usable with a single handle if desired, so that a clean brush element may be inserted without delay in a handle, while the brush element which has been used is being cleansed and prepared for further use.
It will be understood by those familiar with the art that I have illustrated and described a preferred but not an exclusive embodiment of my invention; for details of construction may be modified, as by the use of mechanical equivalents and the like, without departing from the spirit of my invention as described and claimed.
I wish it to be understood also that while I have spoken particularly of the adaptability of my improvements to a shaving brush; I have referred to the shaving brush in the sense of it being a typical article. For it is obvious that brushes so constructed may be used for other toilet purposes, or for applying paints, varnishes, or the. like, where it is desired to remove accumulations of matter from the brush after it has been used and to thoroughly cleanse the brush.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent. of the United States is 4 1. The combination, in a brush, ofia handle, a carrier, a plurality of bristle holders each movably secured at one end to the carrier and provided at its other end with a bunch of bristles projectingin line with the body of the holder, a shank arranged centrally through the carrier and provided with a free end for the bodies of the holders to abut against, and meanson the handle 00- operating with said shank fordetachably attaching the carrier to the handle with the bristle holders parallel with each other.
2. The combination, in a shaving brush, of a hollow handle, a carrier, a plurality of unitary groups of bristles pivoted in radial relation to the carrier, and means for detachably securing the carrier within the handle and thereby assembling the bristle groups in parallel as a brush unit.
3. The combination,.in a shaving brush, of-
a hollow handle, a unitary brush carrier, a plurality of independent unitary groups of bristles carried thereby in relatively movable relation to each other and means for securing the carrier within the handle and thereby assembling the bristle groups in fixed but releasable operative position as a brush unit.
4;. The combination, in a shaving brush, of a hollow handle having a tapered bore, a carrier, a plurality of unitary groups of bristles carried thereby in relatively moveable relation to each other, means for secur ing' the carrier within the tapered bore of the handle and thereby assembling the bristle groups in fixed but releasable operative position as a brush unit.
tachably securing the carrier within the handle, a plurality of bristleigroup holders carried by a carrier, means for assembling the holders in parallel within the handle, and means for closing the spaces between the holders.
