CABLE GUARD FOR GROOVED PULLEYS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that MICHAEL PAs'roRE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable Guards for Grooved Pulleys, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to an improved cable guard for a groovedpulley, and particularly such pulleys as used in connection with dredging buckets of the clamshell type, an object of the invention being to provide a device of this character, which will be of simple construction, and will be effectual to prevent the cable from fouling or leaving the pulley. A further object is to provide a device which will protect the cable from contact with the contents of the bucket, and the consequent damage and wear therefrom.

A still further object is to provide a guard device which may be readily attached to buckets already in use, without dismounting the same or altering the construction.

\Vith the above and other objects in view, an embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanyim drawings, and this em bodiment will be diereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the in vention will be finally pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing a dredging bucket of the clamshell type, provided with a guard device according to the present embodiment of the invention;

Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing a multi-grooved pulley, and a modified embodiment of the invention applied thereto.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, the dredging bucket, of the clamshell type, comprises two sections 10 and 11 hingedly upon a shaft 12, upon which the grooved pulley 13 is provided, and about which pulley the cable 14 extends.

The guard device,according to the present embodiment of the invention, comprises a mounted pair of side arms 15 and 16, loosely hung fromthe hub 17 of the pulley, and mounted thereon by means of split eyes, the lower semi-circular portions 18 and 19 of which are formed integrally at the upper end of the arms, while the upper semi-circular portions 20 and 21 are secured thereto by bolts 22. between the eyes and the hub to allow the device to swing freely,and through its own weight remain in a vertical position.

At the lower ends of the arms a guard is integrally formed between them, comprising a transverse portion 23 at the outside of the flanges of the pulley, and an arcuate portion 24 extending into the groove, in spaced relation thereto, and projecting at each side of the transverse portion to prevent the cable from leaving the groove. The arcuate portion 24 is substantially semi-circular in form, extending completely about the lower half of the pulley, a reinforcing band 25 extending about the arms 15 and 16 and the ends of the portion 24, being secured by rivets to the arms.

When the pulley is providedwith a series of grooves, the transverse portion of the guard will extend the width of the pulley, and be provided with a series of arcuate portions, disposed in the respective grooves. Such a construction is illustrated in the modification, Fig. 4, the arcuate portions 24 being shown in spaced relation along the transverse portion 23, and the reinforcing band 25 extending about the ends of the portions 24". The guard device, according to my invention, is of simple construction, and effectually prevents the cable from fouling or be- Sufficient clearance is provided coming disengaged from the pulley, at the same time protecting it from engagement by the material in the bucket. It may be readily attached or removed, and may be furnished as an original part of the pulley, or may be added to pulleys already in use. While the device is illustrated in connection with a dredging bucket, it Will be understood that it may be used With other structures, as will occur to those skilled in the art.

I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of the inven: tion, but it will be obvious that changes may be made therein, within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims. 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combinationwith a grooved pulley, a guard device comprising a pair of side arms at each side of the pulley and adapted to extend vertically downwardly, split eyes loosely engaging the axis of the pulley whereby said arms are adapted to hang free, each split eye including a semi-circular portion integralwith an arm and a semicircular portion secured to the portion first mentioned by means of a bolt, a transverse portion extending between the lower ends of and connecting the arms, and an integral arcuate portion upon said transverse portion extending into the groove of the pulley and projecting at each side from said transverse portion, the arcuate portion with transverse portion enveloping the pulley for approximately one-half of its circumference.

2. In combination with a pulley having a plurality of grooves and ridges between said grooves, a guard device comprising a pair of side arms at each side of the pulley mounted to hang free from its axis, a transverse portion extending between the lower ends of said armsand beyond said ridges, and a plurality of spaced arcuate portions upon said transverse portion extending into the respective grooves of the pulley and between its ridges and extending at each side from said transverse portion.
