IMPROVEMENT IN CLQVER-SEPARATQR-S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,210, dated April 28, 1874; application filed June 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID WVHITING, of Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glover-Separators and that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.
My invention relates to certain improvements in clover-separators, and particularly to the separating, discharging, and blast ap paratus connected therewith. Said invention consists in the combination, with the slatted separating-apron, of a slatted separating-platform made in two sections, one of which can be slid endwise along the other, so that, when the separating-apron is stretched, the separating-platform may retain its relative position with reference to the apron without effecting the continuity of the platform, as is hereinafter more fully shown. Said invention also consists in the combination of the sliding section of the slatted separating-platform with the stretching device of the separating-apron by means of connecting-links, as is hereinafter more fully shown, whereby the use of a separate device for operating the sliding section of the platform is made unnecessary, and the adjustment of both the apron and platform is effected at one operation. Said invention also consists in the combination, with the fan-case, of a peculiarly-constructed blast-regulator, by means of which the seeds falling through the sieves to the discharge-spout may be subjected to two distinct blasts, as is hereinafter more fully shown.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of a part of a separating apron and platform with the tightening and regulating device, a piece of the frame being broken oif to show said device. Fig. 2 is a side view of said tightening device for the apron and platform. Fig. 3 is a plan of a part of the separating-sieves, the tailing-spout, and blast-regulator, with the separating apron and platform removed. Said regulator is located at the exit-port of the fancase, and is arranged so that its inner and upper sloping face will receive the grain falling from the sieves 3 and 4t and the grain-shoe Q, and turn it into the discharge-spout K, while over its outer faceY a blast is being given to the grain falling through the sieves, and at the same time, if desired, from under its lower face a second blast can be given to the grain as it falls from the inner and upper face of said regulator into the discharge-spout, this second blast coming out under the grain-shoe.

The tailing-spout J is here shown as being connected to the grainshoe Q, but, if preferred, it could be connected to the grain-separating shoe, as the essential feature is to have it have the longitudinal shaking motion of the grain separating shoe and grain-shoe, in order to insure the passage of the tailings down the spout.
When there is not much dust in the heads of grain, and only an ordin ar 1 blast is required, the blast'regulator I is left in the position noted by the dotted lines; but when said blast is not sufficient to thoroughly separate the finer chaff anddust from the grain, the endY of the blast-regulator is raised when a blast of air, created by the fan (the position of which is shown by the dotted lines, Fi 5) rushes through the passage formed under said regulator onto the seeds and chaff falling from the upper and inner face of said regulator into the discharge-spout K, thereby blowing away the dust and fine chaff that may have escaped the blast above.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A slatted separatin g-platform, constructed in two sections, one movable and the other stationary, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a slatted separating-apron and tightening device, of a slatted separating-platform constructed in two sections, and connecting-bars O C, whereby the tightening of the apron and adjustment of the two-part slatted platform are simultaneously eflfected by one tightening device, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a slatted separatingplatform, having curved outer ends of an inwardly-curved plate, H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
.4. The blast-regulator I, of triangular form, arranged to receive the falling grain from grain-shoe Q, and serving as the means of directin g one or two blasts of air onto the grain between its entrance into the sieves and its passage to the discharge-spout, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
