HEEL-BUILDING MACHINE.

Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HeeLBuilding Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to heel building machines, and it has special reference to that class of machines which are adapted to build a heel, or part of a heel, from a series of' lifts that are dinked out ofcsheets of leather, leatherboard or analogous material.
One of the general objects of the invention is to provide a machine of the above indicated character which shall be relatively compact, durable and inexpensive in construction; rapid, efiective and reliable in operation; and which shall uniformly produce heels of a higher quality than has heretofore been possible.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a machine of this general class for building pasted heels, which shall be so con-V structed and arranged as to permit of the successful use of a quick drying paste, with no liability of its setting or losing its adhesive property before the lifts are assembled. The utilization of such a paste is extremely advantageousin the art, as it contributes towards economical and expeditious manufacture and towards an improved product, inasmuch as it spreads easily and uniformly and sets rapidly so that the heel may be compressed shortly without danger of its being so green or wet as to later becom checked and defective.
To this end, one feature of the invention comprises a lift assembling mechanism, em bodying at one end a paste roll over whichv a series of lifts are fed in succession immediately prior to their assemblage into the form of a heel-pile, which assemblage takes place almost instantly after the pasting operation and before the paste loses any of'its desirable qualities.
Another and important object of the invention is to provide an automatic machine of the character indicated which shall be adapted to build pasted heels, having their I respective outer ends entirely free of paste,
and more particularly to provide a machine so constructed and arranged as to produce a base-lift and bring it into assembling position in perfectly dry condition, and to subsequently deliver the pasted lifts in superposed relation upon it.
The feature by means of which this result is attained resides in locating the base-lift magazine out of alinement with or in a different plane than the other lift magazines,
and producing and feeding the base-lift and the other component lifts in different paths into the assembling position, the other lifts being pasted during their feeding movement and the base-lift traversing an entirely independent path which is free of paste so that it is maintained in dry condition.
Another object of the invention is to produce an expeditious automatic lift assembling mechanism of minimum length, while being capable of adjustment to build either mens heels of large sized lifts or womens heels of a relatively large number of smaller sized lifts. 1
With this end in view, a feature of the invention resides in the use of a movable conveyer having an uninterrupted plane upper surface upon which a series of lifts are deposited in a row from a series of lift magazines that are disposed adjacent said conveyer. The magazines comprise a plurality of spaced partitions that are adjustable in position longitudinally of the machine upon suitible supports in order to acoommodate between adjacent partitions any desired sizes of lifts. With this construction, the magazine partitions may be spaced relatively far apart to accommodate the large lifts of mens heels or relatively near together for holding smaller lifts for Womens heels, and, in either case, may be grouped together into a minimum length of space and located as far as possible towards the end of the machine to which the lifts are fed by the conveyer and assembled in the form of a heelpile.
