Description

UNITED STATES. A ]?r.\.'prE 1\T-.fr/ OFFICE 'i GEOEGE vmiraron, OE'INDLAEAPKETDIAEA.
IMPROVEMENT INd sl-lEETgMETAL-ELBQWIFFQRMRS.'
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150.171, dated Aprilg, 41874; Iapplieatiorfiled February 16, 1874. l
v Y KR C'sE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE LUPTON, of
` Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented. an vElbow-Former,
A of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention \is to form a smooth, curved pipe-elbow-from a `single sheet of metal which has previously been made Ainto a curved trough.
Figure l is a pcrspectivevew of my improved -machine for forming pipe-elbows.` Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof. Fig.
3 is a horizontal sectional View of the fixed matrix and vibrating mandrel. Fig. 4 is a curved. Ushaped blank ready to be bent into a pipe-elbow ou the machine illustra-ted' by the v other figures.
The same letters of reference are used in all the figures in the designation of 'identical parts.
A represents the base 0r foundation of my machine, at the 'topof -which is securely attaohed the table C, with a curved matrix cor,-
responding exactly With'the convex radius of" ,with the supporting-matrix and curv D, as shown, and for the purposes desgaib d. f
GEORGE Lorrom with the curve-of theelbow.. The mandrelis toXtI-e top of base Ain j firmly -pivoted at a front ofthe matrix (l, a d in such a'manner that it may have a slight Y 'bration. A spring, B', concealed in a socket i' the matrix C, hold;- ing it out and away from t e matrix, as shown best in Fig. 3, until 'the ac ion of the dies D force it, with the eurved't ough E, into the matrix, Where they are firml supported until the dies bring the edges of th trough together, thus. forming' a smooth, cur ed pipe elbow.
As soon as. the dies D rele se their grasp upon the trough and mandrel the concealed 'spring throws them away from the matrix, which facilitates the removal of the pi pe-elbow The dies'D are curved to from the mandrel. correspond with the inside radius of the curved pipe-elbow. They may be operated by levers andcam, as shown best in Fig. 2, or by anyA other equivalent mechanical device,
I claim as new- 1. The combination of the curvedonandrel B and curved dies D,lsubstantially asl-and for the purpose specified. v 2. The combination offleurved` Witnesses: v
