To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. IRELAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Richmond Hill,
'5 borou h of Queens, in the county of Queens and tate of New York, have invented a new and Improved Glare Preventer for Headlights, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to headlights for automobiles and particularly to an' 1mproved construction wherein the glare is reduced to a minimum or completely eliminated and has for an object to provide a construction which may be readily applied to headlights now in use.
-Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a device capable of ready application to the ordinary headlight now in use and '20 which will permit the light to illuminate the road without producing a glare along side of the road.
A further object, more specifically, is to rovide a light deflecting structure for eadlights designed to soften the light by causing a difiusion thereofbefore the light leaves the vicinity of the lamp.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a front view of a complete headlight with a device embodying the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a side view of the lamp shown in Figure 1 with certain parts broken away on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the glare preventing device shown in Figure 1.
Referrin to the accompanying drawing by numera s, 1 indicates an ordinary head'- 4 light provided with the usual reflecting mirror 2'and an electric lamp or bulb 3 adapted to be screwed into a suitable socket 4 in the usual manner. The glare preventing device is shown particularly in Figure 3 in which as it will be seen that there is provided a base or bottom ring structure Sand an outer or top ring structure 6 connected by spaced arms 7 whereby a plurality of apertures 8 are presented. The ring 5 is preferably fiat so while the ring 6 is bent back upon itself as shown in Figure 2 and forms a substantially ssshaped structure in cross section with an edge 9 adapted to enga e the reflecting surface 2. A plurality 0% projecting tabs 10 are provided to present supporting feet whereby the edge 9 will not injure the reflecting surface 2. The ring 6 is provided with the same number of apertures 11 as there are apertures 8 but the apertures 11 are arranged opposite the arms 7 whereby the rays of light passing from the lamp 3 must pass through the apertures 8, strike part of the reflecting surface 2 and become difiused, after which, the diffused light is permitted to escape through the apertures 11 to give the desired illumination of the road. The lamp 3 will, of course, give some direct illumination but no reflected illumination except that which passes through the apertures 11.
The device may be secured in the headlight 1 by suitable screws 12 if desired, or other suitable securing means though under most circumstances the lamp 3 extending through the aperture 13 will act as supporting means. The device as illustrated, may
' be made of any desired kind of metal and is preferably nickel plated on the outside and either gold plated or nickel plated on the inside. It will also be noted from Figure 2 of the drawing that the device is beveled or inclined from the top portion downwardly.
What I claim 2-- a 1. A glare preventing device for headlights, comprising an opaque cup-shaped member having apertures in the side walls,
and an apertured ring substantially radiating rearwardly from the top of said member, the apertures in the ring and the cupshaped member being staggered.
2. A device for headlights for preventing glare, comprising a cup-shaped member fac ing substantially in the direction of the headlight and fitting in the bottom of the headlight, said cup-shaped member having a plurality of spaced apertures in the side walls thereof, and a ring radiatin rearwardly from the outer end of sa1 cupshaped member, said ring having a plurality of apertures positioned in staggered'relationship to the apertures of the cup-shaped member, said ring also being formed with a plurality of supporting extensions.

A device or preventing glare from headlights, comprising a cup-shaped memberfitted into the headlight and surrounding the lamp socket thereof, the lamp of the headlight bein adapted to be positioned in apertures staggered in relation to the first the cup-shape member, said cup-shaped mentioned apertures whereby rays of light member being provided with a plurality of from said. lamp will become diffused to a 1 apertures in the side walls thereof, and a certain extent before passing out the last 5' ring structure extending from said cupmentioned apertures.
