COIL SYSTEM.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH H. LANGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coil Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to inductance coils and supports therefor, and more particularly to coils which may readily be removed from their supports to permit of the convenient interchange of coils having different characteristics.
My invention has particular a plication in radio apparatus in which it is requently desired to change the coils emplo ed to permit of the use of the apparatus with a wider range of wave lengths than can be conveniently obtained with a single coil.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient construction'which will permit of the ready removal of a coil system comprising, if desired, a fixed and a movable coil, from a holder whereby it may be connected to an electric circuit and the substitution therefor of another coil system having different characteristics.
The novel features which I believe to be characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. My invention itself, however, both as to its organization and method of operation will best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a sectional view of one embodiment of my invention; Fig 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is i a perspective of the fixed coil; Fig. 4 is an exploded view of the movable coil and its operating mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a perspective of the holder.
As indicated in the drawing, I provide a fixed coil 1 made up of windings 2 and 3, which are wound u on a hollow cylinder 4. The terminals of tliese windings and convenient taps thereon are connected to contact members 5 which are secured to one end of the peripher l of the cylinder 4. Each of the contact members 5, 11 and 12 are provided with projections 15, which engage with the contact members 14 so that when the coil system is inserted in the holder it will be held in its desired position and will not readily slip out or become disengaged. A pin 16 secured to the disk 13 is adapted to engage a slot 17 in the end of the cylinder 4 and insure the placing of the coil system in its desired location in the holder. I have indicated the coil system as mounted in a "casing 18, the disk 13 being secured to posts shaft is provided with a slot 24. \Vhen it is desired to remove or insert a coil system, such as that described, the handle 22 is turned to bring the slot 24 upon the upper side of the disk 23. It will be apparent that a coil system such as that described may be connected to any desired electrical circuit by means of conductors connected to the contact members 14 and that by varying the number of taps on the coil windings and the number of contact members employed any desired amount of winding may be included in a circuit. The coil system may be employed merely as a variometer or the movable coil may serve as a variable coupler, as desired.
\Vhile I have shown and dacribed the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be ap arent that many variations in the manner oi constructing the coil system and in the several structural features whereby the coil system is held in the holder may be the scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is v 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coil, a hollow cylinder upon which saidcoil is wound, a plurality of taps to said coil, a plurality of contact members connected to said taps and distributed around the periphery of one end of the cylinder and a holder for said coil having a plurality of contact'mem-bers arranged in' a circle and adapted to make contact with the contact members on the cylinder and thereby serve to hold the coil in a desired position and provide a readily detachable connection between the coil and an electrical circuit.

In an apparatus of the class described the combination of a coil, a hollow cylinder upon which said coil is wound, a plurality of taps to said coil, a second coil located within the first coil and movable with respect to the first coil, a plurality of contact members connectedto said taps and'to said second coil and secured tosaid cylinder, and a holder for said coils having a plural ity of contact members adapted to malte-v contactwith the contact members on the cylinder and thereby serve to hold the coils in a desired position and provide a readily detachable connection between the coils and an electrical circuit.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coil, a hollow cylinder upon which'said coil is wound, a plurality of taps tosaid coil, a plurality of contact members connected to said taps and distributed around the periphery of one end of the cylinder. and a holder for said coil having a plurality of contact members arranged in a circle and adapted to make contact with the contact memberson the cylinder and thereby serve to hold the coilin a desired position and provide a readily detachable connection between the coil and an electrical circuit, and means on said holder, coacting with means onthe cylinder for insuring contact between desired contact members when the coil is inserted in the holder. 4. In an apparatus of the class described,
the combination of a coil, a hollow cylinder upon which said coil is wound, a plurality of taps to said coil, a second coil located within the first coil and movable with respect to the first coil, means for rotating said second coil, a plurality of contact members connected to said taps and to said second coil and secured to said cylinder, and
a holder for said coils, having aplurality of contact members adapted to make readily detachable contact with the contact members on the cylinder, the means for rotating the second coil being so arranged that at one point in its rotationt-he second coil will be detachedfrom the means for rotation by the withdrawal of the coils from the holder.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coil, a holder for said coil arranged to hold the coil in a desired position and make electrical connections between the coil and an electric circuit, said coil being arranged so that it can be readily detached from the holder, a second coil mounted within the first and movable with respect to'the firstlcoil, a shaft for rotating the second coil, and a connection between the shaft and the coil which may be detac'hed at the same time, that the first coil is withdrawn from the holder.

In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a coil, a holder for said coil arranged to hold the coilin a desired positionand make electrical connections between. the coil and-an electric circuit, said coil being arranged so that it can be readily detached from the holder, a second coil mounted within the first and movable with respect to the first coil, a shaft for rotating the second coil, a disk on said shaft having 'aslot therein and a trunnion on said Sec.-
ond coil which is adapted to enter the slot in said disk when the first coil is inserted in the holder and thereby permit of the rotation of the second coil by means of the shaft.
