Description

. July 8 192.
c. A. CHANTILIS CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed Feb. 10; 1922 Patented July 8, 1924.
UNITED STATES CHARLES A. CHANT 1H8, 0F BELLEVUE, OHIO.
CIGARETTE HOLDER.
Application filed February 10, 1922. Serial No. 585,570.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES TILIS, a former subject of the King of Greece (who has declared his intention of becoming a citizen of the United States and taken out his first papers), residing at Bellevue, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in eneral to tobacco smokers, appliances, an more particularly to a smoke-filtering dev ce which is adapted to be associated with the mouth-piece of a cigarette holder, cigar holder, pipe or the like, for the purpose of removing the nicotine and other objectionable products from the smoke before it enters the mouth of the smoker. Among the objects of the invention is to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be readily mounted in the mouth-piece or stem of a pipe or cigarette holder and will operate in an effective manner to filter the smoke without interfering with the customary mounting or handling of the device.
The invention also contemplates a device of this character which is inexpensive in its construction and can be manufactured in quantities and sold at a comparatively small price. A further advantage resides in the fact that the filter device is readily accessible and the filtering medium can be quickly removed or replaced without difficulty whenever it becomes necessary.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in certain combinations, arrangements, and associations of the parts, as will more fully appear as the decription proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawin s, in which I igure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a cigar or cigarette holder which is provided with a smoke filter embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 in which the invention is illustrated.- as applied to a tobacco pipe.
A. CITAN- Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all of the views of the drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing, which show the invention as used in connection with a cigar or cigarette holder, the numeral. 1 designates the mouth-piece, and 2 the tubular stem which is detachably connected to the mouth-piece and has a flared opening 3 within which the cigar or cigarette is adapted to be fitted in the usual and well known manner. The mouth-piece is provided with the usual central passage 4 through which the smoke is conveyed from the interior of the tubular stem 2 into the mouth of the smoker. A nipple 5 is formed at the end of the mouth-piece 1 and the rear end of the tubular stem 2 telescopes over the nipple and detachably engages the same to provide a connection between the mouth-piece and the stem. This rear end of the stem which engages the nipple is shown as reinforced by an exterior ferrule or. band 6. This is the usual and well known construction and no claim to novelty is based thereon.
Fitted upon the end of the nipple 5 is a filter cap 7 which preferably has comparatively thin walls and may be formed of any suitable material, although I contemplate making these caps of glass, since glass is an inexpensive material that can be readily cleaned and it will not absorb the nicotine and other products which may be condensed from the smoke. The extremity of the nipple 5 may be rabbeted as indicated at 5 to engage the open end of the filter cap, the other end of th filter cap being closed, and the sidewalls of the filter cap being provided with suitable openings, such as those'indicated at 8 and 9. These openings are arranged'so that they may be closed b the interior walls of the tubular stem an the openings 8 are arranged near the closed end of the filter cap while the openings 9 are arranged near the opposite end of the filter cap. Some suitable filtering material such as the absorbent cotton 10 is placed within the cap, and the interior of the tubular stem 2 is shown as provided with channels or depressions 11 which are adapted to communicate with either set of the openings 8 and 9, said openings being so arranged that by rotating the stem 2 upon the mouth-piece the channels can be brought over the either set of openings, the other set of openings being closed.
These channels 11 extend forwardly beyond the filter cap 7 so that the smoke can enter the forward ends of the channels and be conveyed thereby to either set of the openings, depending upon the adjustment of t e parts. If the channels are in communication with the outer openings 8 the smoke will be drawn through substantially the full len th of the filtering medium 10, although if t e channels are in communication with the openings 9 the smoke will enter the filter cap 7 at the base thereof and there will be a comparatively slight filtering action. This latter position may be desirable under some conditlons as for instance when there is slight difiiculty in drawing the smoke through the mouthpiece, owing to a'poorly made cigar or cigarette, or a poorly packed ipe. It will be obvious, however, that the device can be very quickly adjusted and set so that the smoke will enter the filter cap 7 through either the outer set of 0 enings 8 or the inner set of openings 9, n Figure 2 I have shown the band 6 of the stem as provided with an arrow 12 which can be brought into registry with either one of a pair of graduations 13 on the mouthiece, thereby enabling the stem to be rotat and set accurately in either position, as may be desired, the channels 11 being in communication with the openings 8 when the arrow 12 is turned to one of the graduations 13, and being in communication with the other set of openings 9 when the arrow is turned to the other graduation 13.
In Fi trated t e invention as app ied to a conventional tobacco pipe. The bowl 14 of the pipe is provided with a stem 2 which has the opening through the rear end thereof enlarged or flared as indicated at 3 so that it can engage the ni ple of a mouth-piece 1 which is substantially identical inconstruction with the mouth-piece of the cigar and cigarette holder which has just been described. The filter ca 7" is identical in construction with the lter cap' 7 and is arranged and mounted in substantially the same manner. In both formsof the invention the mouth-piece and stem can-bereadily separated-mt anytime in the usual man-- re 30f the drawin s I have illusner, and the filter cap 7 is then exposed so that it can be removed and the filtering medium within the same very quickly replaced. The absorbent cotton WhlOh is used as the filtering medium is so inexpensive that it can be replaced as often as desired and theexpense is so slight as to be negliglble. As the smoke is drawn through the absorbent cotton the nicotine and nits a number of other objectionable pro nets are condensed and absorbed so that the smoker is enabled to enjoy a cool and refreshing smoke. In order to adjust the parts to draw the smoke through the openings 8 or the openings 9, the filter cap 7 may be rotated and adjusted u on the ni ple 5 instead of rotating the stem upon t e mouth-piece, and this would be preferable where the invention is embodied in-a tobacco pipe as indicated by Figure 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a mouth piece, a filter member associated with the mouth piece, and means for causing the smoke to pass through predetermined varying lengths of the filter member to vary the filtering action upon the smoke.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a mouth piece, a member carried by the mouth piece, a tubular stem housing the filter memberand mounted upon the mouth piece, and means controlled by a relative rotation of the filter member and tubular stem for causing the smoke to ass throu h predetermined variable lengt of the fi ter member to vary the filtering action upon the smoke.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a mouth piece, a filter cap mounted thereon and provided with lateral openings, a filtering medium within the filter cap, and a tubular stem carried by the mouth piece and having interior walls adapted to close the lateral openings of the filter cap, said tubular stem being rovided with an interior channel adapte to be brought into and out of registry with the lateral'openings of the cap by a relative rotation of the tubular stem and cap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES A. GHANTILIS.
