Description

Patented July 8, 1924.

VALVE LIFTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIE TAYLOR, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Scotch Plains, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve tools or implements for internal combustion engines or the like and more particularly to a novel and improved device for manipulating and removing valve springs with facility and ease.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a hand operated implement or tool particularly adapted for use in compressing heavy springs such as are used in connection with valves for internal combustion engines wherein said springs may be compressed and the cotter pin removed in such instances where it is impossible to manipulate the spring with the common ordinary tool.
Another and very important object of my invention is the provision of a valve manipulating tool of the character above specified having an adjustable fulcrum for engaging the flanged portion of the cylinder casing so that the lever arm of the tool may properly engage the valve spring to be raised when removing the same from the valve stem.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a lever operated valve spring removing tool, which is extremely simple in construction, highly efficient in operation and use, strong, durable, practical, easily assembled and otherwise capable of being manufactured at an extremely low cost. whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced. V
I attain the above objects and others which will become apparent as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the drawings and wherein:
Figure 1 is a part sectional side view of the valve spring showing the device in its preferred form as the spring is being raised or compressed.
Figure 2 is a side view of the tool.
Figure 3 is a plan.
Figure 4 is a front view.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates the cylinder casting of the engine, 6 the valve stem, 7 the usual valve spring. 8 designates the usual washer held in place by the key or cotter pin 9 passing through the valve stem, which pin or key must be removed as the valve spring is raised on the stem.
In order to accomplish the above function, I have provided a bent lever consisting of a shank lOhaving a handle 11 atone end thereof said lever being bent downwardly as at 12 and terminating in a fork 13, the arms 14, 15 of which are adapted to engage the bottom of the spring to be compressed or lifted. Pivotally mounted between the arms 14, 15, I have provided a block 16. The said block is pivotally mounted as at 17 some-what re moved from the ends of the arms 14, 15 and is internally threaded to receive the vertically adjustable screw 18 passing therethrough as clearly shown by the drawings.
Rigidly mounted and attached to the lower end of the screw 18, I have provided a forked fulcrum or gripping element designated in its entirety by numeral 19, the arms 20, 21 of said element being notched or serrated as at 22 so as to grip the flanged portion of the cylinder casing, it being observed that the opposite end of the said element 19 is bevelled to its edge 23 so as to lie perfectly fiat with the wall of the casing during the gripping thereof as the lever is manipulated.
By reason of this construction it will be readily seen that as the screw 18 and the fulcrum 19 carried thereby, are adjusted to accommodate the desired spring to be raised that by simply depressing the lever 10, the spring 7 may be compressed and the pin or key removed in the well known manner without danger to the operator. Of course a downward thrust on the fulcrum 19 will securely maintain the same in position and without danger of slipping and at the same time, the lever 10 being pivoted on the block 16 permits of the raising of the arms 14 and 15 engaging the spring to be lifted.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is l. A valve spring lifter comprisin a lever, a fork formed at one end thereo a carried by the lower end of the screw to engage the flange of a cylinder.
2. A valve spring lifter comprising a lever,
a fork formed at one end thereof, a pivotally mounted, internally threaded block carried by the forked end of the lever, a screw adjustable in said block, an angular fulcrum element-carried bythescrew, one end of said fulcrum element being serrated and the opposite end bevelled so as to engage the flange and side wall respectively of a cylinder cas 20 ing as the lever'is manipulated.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
