COLLAPSIBLE HACK SAW.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Eniis'runs 1V. McIN- TIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the-county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Hack Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in saws.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a collapsible hack saw, substantially conforming to that type of saw defined and claimed in my copending ap-, plic'ation, Serial No. 467,255, filed May 6,
1921, and including certain important and practical advantages thereover.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a hack saw of the above mentioned character, which may be economically manufactured, by reason of its extremely simple construction, and which may be collapsed or extended in stable manner, as desired.
Other objects and advantages of this in vention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of this invention, the letter A generally designates the improved hack saw, which may include the collapsible frame B; blade C; and means D for blade tensioning and saw operating purposes.
The frame B preferably comprises end bars and 16, and a connecting bar 17. The connecting bar 17 is substantially U-shaped in formation, including side flanges 18, connected by a bight portion 19, and thus providing a pocket 20 extending longitudinally of the connecting bar 17 open at the free edges of the sides 18 thereof. Filler pieces 21 are preferably provided in the pocket 20 at the ends of the connecting bar 17 and receive the pins 22 transversely therethrough, upon the outer ends of which the end bars 15 and 16 are pivoted. In cross section, the end bars 15 and 16 are preferably U-shaped or channel shaped, including the side flanges 25 and bight connecting portions 26. The pockets 28- and 29 respectively provided by the end bars 15 and 16 are greater in width than the pocket 20 of the channel 17, so that when in collapsed relation, the end bars 15 and 16 may be folded to receive their adjacent ends of the bar 17 in said pockets, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, showing the end bars in collapsed relation upon the connecting bar 17. This is substantially the construction illustrated in my copending application above referred to. It is preferred that the bight portion 26 of the end bars 15 and 16 extend substantially the entire length of said end bars so that when in extended relation, said bight portion 26 may engage the bight portion 19- of the connecting bar 17 to hold the frame in a U-shaped relation when in its extended open position.
The blade C may be of any approved type, having apertures in the ends thereof and being provided with teeth 31; said blade being of such length as to receive accommodation in the pocket 20 of the connecting bar 17, in order to cooperate with the compact collapsing arrangementof the improved saw.
Referring to the blade tensioning and saw operating means D, the same preferably includes a handle 35, which is channel shaped in cross section and substantially equal to the length of the end bar 15. This handle end bar 15 in the pocket 40, provided by the nected to the outersurfaces of the flanges,
of the end bar 15. In closed position, upon the end bar 15, the handle receives said handle 35, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings. It can thus be seen that the handle 35 is oscillatively mounted, as by. thevpins 39, to the free end of the connecting bar 15, and in order'to prevent too far closed position of the handle 35 over the end bar 15, it is preferred to provide. recesses 41 extending inwardly of the corners of the handle flanges 36, which may engage the extending heads or ends of the pin 22 which pivots the end bar 15 to the connectin bar 17. For a purpose which will be suhsequently described, it is preferred to provide a pin 45, which extends transversely through the handle 35, engaging the flanges 36 thereof adjacent to and eccentrically of the pivot of said handle.
Referring to the blade supporting and tensioning means of the improved hack saw A, the same includes a member 45 which may be swivelly or rigidly connected as by a pin 47, to the lower bight portion 48 of the bight 26 of the end channel 16; said portion 48 preferably being flattened and disposed in such manner that when the member 45 is engaged by the blade C, the latter will not be susceptible of easy swivelling. The member '45. is preferably laterally reduced and provided with a hook pin 49 for receiving the aperture on one end of the blade C. A nut 50 is preferably provided for cooperation with the saw handle 35 in order to adjustably tension the blade C thereto; the same preferably including a nut member 51 of L-shaped formation including the body portion 52 provided with the screw threaded opening 53 therein, adapted to adjustably receive the screw threaded shank portion 54 of a bolt 55. A portion 56 of the nut 51, extends substantially at right angles to the nut body portion 52 andis outturned in arcuate manner upon its free end. As is illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, the nut when adjustably receiving the bolt 55 has the portion 56 thereof substantially parallel with the shank of the bolt, to provide a pocket adapted to receive the pin 45 of handle 35, sot-hat the bolt 55, and in fact the entire link 50, may be slid longitudinally within the pocket 40 of the handle 35 against liability of accidental displacement. The bolt 55 is provided with a sqgiared or polygonal shaped portion 58, w ich, when disposed within the pocket 40 of the handle 35 intermediate the side flanges 36, is so engaged by the latter, as to prevent rotational movement of the bolt with respect ally of the edes 60 of the andle flanges 36,
so that the po ygonal portion 58 is removed from the handle pocket, and in which relation, the bolt maybe rotated for adjusting in the nut 51. A head or enlarged portion 61 is provided upon the end ,of the bolt 55,
which provides a laterally extending hook' pin 62, for receiving the apertured end of the blade 0. It is to be noted that a lug 63 extends outwardly, substantially at right angles to the axis of the bolt 55, the functions of which will be more specifically set; forth hereinafter.
In operation, the end bars 15 and 16 are swung into extended position with the connectin%bar 17 substantially as is illustrated in igur 5 of the drawings to form a rigid structure. In this position of the frame B, the'handle 35 is swung open, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 6 of'the drawings, and the blade C is attached asby its apertured ends to the member 45, and to the bolt pin 62 as above mentioned. This operation having been'eflected, it is to be noted that the nut 51 rests, at its juncture of the body portion 52 and extension 56, upon the pin 45. Upon upward swinging of the handle 35 to receive the end bar 15 in the pocket 40 thereof, it is to be noted that the pin 45 is swung through an arc with the pivot pins'39 as a center, and which draws the link 50 rearwardly to tension the blade C, until the pin 45 and link 50 are passed dead center with respect to the pivot pins 39. In this position, the saw A is ready for sawing purposes.
In the collapsing of the improved saw A, the handle 35 is first swung outwardly in order to release the blade C. The blade is then disposed within the pocket 20 of the have been slid entirely into the pocket 40 of the handle 35, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, until the laterno ally extending lug 63 of the bolt 55 is engaged on one side by the transverse handle in 45, and on its opposite side is engaged y the lower edge 65 of the end bar bight portion 26; and in which position the link 50 is maintained against longitudinal sliding or rattling within the pocket 40 of the handle. In this relation, the handle and the end bar 15 are swung upwardl to embrace the connecting bar 17 It is to e noted that no the swivel member 45 .is also usefulin connection with the collapsing as above described, in that the same extends upwardly, substantially as is illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings and engages the bight portion 37 of the handle 35, within the pocket 40, to prevent too far downward sliding movement of the handle 35. In this manner, the improved saw, including the details are maintained in' a stable collapsed relation against liability of detachment of any parts.
A matter of considerable importance in connection withthe tensioning of the blade 0 for use, is in the manner in which the bolt is engaged by the edge 65 of the end bar 15 at a point intermediate the nut 51 and the connection of the blade C therewith.-
This prevents any liability ofoscillation of the link 50 and maintains the same in rigid position for stable mounting of the blade C.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A saw comprising a frame, a lever pivoted to the frame, a blade connected at one end to the frame remote from said lever, and a link connected at one end to the lever eccentric of the lever pivot and at the other end to the other end of said blade, so that when the lever is swung on its ivot to tension said blade, it will move t e link into a firm engagement with the frame at a point on the link between the connections of the same to the lever and blade.
2. A saw comprising a frame, a lever pivoted to said frame and having a pin extending eccentrically of its pivot, a link provided with a hooked end, and a blade adapted for engagement by said link and frame, whereby upon swinging of said lever said pin thereof will engage the end ofsaid link so that the link may be moved for tensioning said blade.
3. A saw comprising a frame, a lever pivoted to said frame providing a pin extending transversely therethrough eccentric to and adjacent the lever'pivot, a nut provided with an end for detachable engagement with said pin, abolt adapted for adjustable engagement in said nut, and a blade adapted for connection to sald frame and to said bolt whereby upon swinging of the lever said nut will be engaged by the lever pin for moving said bolt ,to tension the blade in said frame.
4. A saw comprising a frame, a lever pivp and adjacent the leverpivot, a nut provided with an end for detachable engagement with said pin, a bolt adapted for adjustable en-' gagement in saidnut, a blade adapted for connection to said frame and to said bolt whereby upon swinging of the lever said nut will -be engaged by the lever pin for moving said bolt to tension the blade in said frame, and move said bolt to engage said frame intermediate. its connection w1th the nut and its connection with the blade to stabilize said bolt.
5. A saw comprising a collapsible frame, a handle pivoted 'to said frame, a in extending transversely of said hand e adjacent its' pivot, a link provided with a hooked end, and a blade adapted for cona nection to said frame and said link, said handle when swung to a closed position upon said frame adapted to move said pin for engagement with the hooked end of said lin whereby the latter may be drawn in such relation as to tension said blade.
6. A saw comprising a collapsible frame including a connecting bar and end bars pivotally connected to the ends of said connectmg bar for swinging so that the same may be collapsed in parallel relation upon said connecting bar or extended into engagement with said connecting bar in U- shaped relation, a handle. pivot-all connected adjacent a free end of one 0 said end bars,- and a blade connecting link movable in said handle including a lug adapted to be clamped intermediate the handle and an end bar when the handle is in collapsed relation with respect to said frame.
7. A saw comprising a frame, a handle pivotally connected to said frame including a pocket intermediate the sides thereof, a pin' transversely mounted through said handle sides in adjacent and eccentric relation to the handle pivot, a link including an L-shaped nutfor slidable mounting within the pocket of said handle, and a bolt including a screw threaded portion for adjustment within said nut and a square portion for engagement in the pocket intermediate the sldes of said handle to prevent rotation thereof when so positioned, and a blade for connection to said frame and to the bolt of said link, said handle when moved into position, adapted to swing the transverse pin thereof for engaging said nut whereby the bolt may be drawn for tensioning said blade.
