Description
sNITE EARLS I. FISK, OF ALMENA, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN STILTND HAND PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
150,013, dated April 2l, 1&74; application filed March 10, 1874.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, EARLS I. FIsK, of Almena, county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Stilt and Hand Planting Machine. The following dcscription, taken in connection with the accompanying plate of drawings hereinafter referred to, forms a fnll and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and principles of the invention, by which the same may' be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts thereof as are claimed as new and are desired to be seein ed by Letters Patent of the United States.
My invention relates to that class of seedingmachines commonly known as hand-planters; and the nature thereof consists in certain iniprovements in the construction of the same, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying' drawing, forming part of the specification herein, Figure l is a side view of planter. Fig. 2 is also a side view, representing side opposite that shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front view, a part being removed.
In the drawing referred to, the jaw designated A is rigidly attached to the upright staff B, and the jaw A to the piece C, which is pivoted, by means of the plates E,to the said sta-ii". A treadle, F, is rigidly attached to one of the plates E, to which the foot may be secured by means of the strap c. By ineansof this treadle the vjaws may be opened with facility, the jaw A being longer than the jaw A, as shown. I designates a funnel communica-ting with the tube D, through which the seeds descend. K
designates a spiral spring, by means of which the jaws are kept closed. The finger m is attached to the lever n pivoted to the piece C in suoli a-lnanner that when the jaws are opened the connecting-rod L and lever u cause the iinger to vibrate. "When the jaws close, the finger closes against the curved strip o fastened to the inner side of one ofthe plates E, as shown in Fig. 3. The sliding rod H, hooked at thelower end h and provided with the spring is used to cover the seed as it falls.
To operate the implement, place the foot on the foot-piece and buckle the strap around the foot. When the foot is pnt forward the planter' is shut, and the seed placed in the funnel will be deposited when the jaws are opened. The tin ger, vibrating back and forth, keeps the said jaws clean and prevents them from clogging.
rIhe implement may be used as hand-planter by using the handle G, the treadle F being lengthened by turning the toe-piece S.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent* 'Ihe combination of the jaws A A', staff B, piece G, plates E, treadle F, funnel I, tnbe'D, spring K, finger m, cross-piece n, and connecting-rod L, all operating together as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set inyhand this 2d day of January, 1874.
EARLS I. FISK.
