IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP TRIMMERS AND EXTINGUISHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,964, dated April 21, 1874; application filed March 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WALTON, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp Trimmer and Extinguisher, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lampburner to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, parts of the burner being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, showing a modification of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section of the same, taken through the line 0c 00, Fig. 3. Fig.
, 5 is a detail sectional view of the device shown as applied to an argand-burner. top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment for lamp-burners, which shall be so constructed that it may be used for trimming the wick and extinguishing the flame and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation.
A represents a fiat wick-tube, around which is fitted a sleeve, B, from which, upon the opposite sides of the wick-tube, project two jaws, (J, the upper ends of which are inclined inward, so as, when the sleeve B is pushed up, to meet above the top of the tube and pinch off the wick. To the .opposite sides of the wick-tubes A, near their upper ends, are attached projections D, which rest against the inner surfaces of the jaws O, and keep them from pressing against the wick before they have risen to the proper height above the tube A. Then the jaws 0 have risen sufficiently above the top of the tube A, the projections D enter slots in the jaws C, which allows the said jaws to come together with a sudden inward movement, by which the wick Fig. 6 is a will be neatly and evenly trimmed. Upon the side edges of one or both of the jaws O are formed flanges 0, so that, when the jaws come together, they may form a close cap over the top of the wick-tube, and thus extinguish the wick. The device B 0 may be raised and lowered upon the tube A by an arm, E, attached to, or formed upon, the sleeve B, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, or by a ratchet-wheel, F, attached to a rod, G, which works in holes in the burner. The teeth of the ratchet-wheel F enter notches or teeth in the sleeve B, or in an arm formed upon or attached to said sleeve.
In the case of an argandburner, six, more or less, jaws, (l, are used, which are so formed that they may meet in a close circle when they spring inward against the inner tube II of the burner, and their edges are concaved to fit against the outer side of the said inner tube H.
To enable the device to be used with an argand or circular-tube burner, the outer tube I must be made shorter than the inner tube H, as shown in Fig. 5, so that thejaws may readily push off the cinders, leaving the end of the wick upon an incline or bevel. This shape of the end of the wick gives a wider surface for the flame, and thus increases the light.
In the case of a round wick-tube, the sleeve B may be moved up and down upon the tube in the same way as in the case of a flat tube, or it may be connected with or formed upon a movable part of the burner, according to the construction of said burner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with wick-tube A, having projections D, of the sleeve B, having jaws U U inwardly inclined at the upper end, and provided with flanges c, as described, so that the wick may be trimmed, as well as the flame extinguished, by the same actuating mechanism or movement.
\VILLIAM IVALTON.
