Application filed December 10, 1920. Serial No. 429,616.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERWIN R. STOEKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lliilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of 'Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetic Switches, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying -1 drawing, forming a part of this specificawherein substantially the full attractive force of the operating winding is available for holding the switch contacts in closed J position.
Various other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear. The accompanying drawing illustrates certain embodiments of the invention which will now be described it being understood that the invention is susceptible of various modifications without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
a In the drawln Fig. 1 is a si le elevational view partly in section of a switch embodying one form of the invention, and,
Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevational views 4 of switches illustrating modified embodiments of the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, the same illustrates a switch including co-operating contacts .1 and 2, the'former being secured to an insulating base 3 and the latter being secured to the upper end of an 0 rating lever 4 by a conventional form oi spring pressure device 5. The lower end of operating lever- 4 is pivoted to a U.-shaped magnet frame 6 secured to base 3 and said lever carries an armature 7 arranged to seal with a pole face 8 on said frame upon ener ization of a winding 9.
' perating lever 4 has its inner face provided ith a recess 10'for receiving arma;
ture 7 and said armature comprises a plurality of magnetic spring laminations arranged with their faces at substantially right angles to the line of travel of opcrating lever 4. The lower ends of the to spring laminations are clamped to a raised face 11 in the lower end of recess 10 by rivets 12 one of which is shown. The upper ends of the springlaminations have a o rivet 13 passing therethrough said rivet having heads on opposite ends thereof and being of such length as to permit spread: ing apart of the upper ends of the laminations.
Assuming that the switch is in open position upon energization of winding 9, the several spring laminations of armature 7 will be attracted towards pole face 8 and will bend in said direction while moving operating lever 4 towards closed position. However, it shouldbe noted that the density of the magnetic flux produced by winding 9 decreases from left to right in armature 7, and the, several spring laminations of said armature will therefore bend to varying degrees corresponding to such decrease in the magnetic flux. This difference in the degree of bending of'the spring laminations results in separation of the upper ends thereof and therefore during 010- sure of the switch the left hand spring lamination of the armature will first seal with pole face 8 and the several laminations will then re-engage progressively from left to right. It is apparent that impact no of the relatively light leaf spring on the left of the armature with the pole face 8 will produce only a very slight click and that progressive re-engagement of the several spring laminations will be practically noiseless due to the cushioning effect of the air therebetween. It is also ap arent that upon closure of the switch the etic energy of the movin switch parts is gradually dissipated by ending of the several 10o laminations and by the explusion of air therebetween whereby-the tendency for rebound of the moving switch parts is minimized. Further it should be noted that upon closure of the switch the several laminations of armature 7 will be bent slightly towards the left due to the opposing action of spring pressure device 5 to hold contact 2 in firm engagement with contact 1.
Referring to Fig. 2 the same shows a with the exception that the stationary and movable switch elements are of slightly different design and the operating winding 9.
is provided with a magnet frame 14: having pole fac'es15 and 16 to be bridged by an armature 17 carried by operating lever 4. As shown in Fig. 2 the several spring laminations of armature 17 are clamped intermediate their ends to the inner face of operating lever 4 by rivets 18 and said laminations are slightly curved away from said face. The spring laminations have rivets 19 passing therethrough adjacent opposite ends thereof, said rivets having heads on opposite ends and .being of sufficient length to permit spreading apart of the laminations at both ends of the armature. The upper ends of the laminations are attracted by pole face 15 of frame 14 while the lower ends of the laminations are attracted by pole face 16 on said frame." For the reasons stated in connection with Fig. 1 it is apparent that upon attraction of armature 17 by pole faces 15 and 16 the opposite ends of the spring laminations will spread apart during movement towards said pole faces. Upon engagement of the left hand lamination with said pole faces the several laminations will re-engage progressively at opposite ends with the re sults noted in connection with Fig. 1.
The switch shown in Fig. 3 is a modification of the switch shown in Fig. 2 the laminations of the armature 17 being curved to a greater degree and being arranged whereby opposite ends of each seal with the pole faces 15 and 16 of frame 14. In this modification as in Fig. 2 the opposite ends of the spring laminations will spread apart during movement towards pole faces 15 and 16 and willassume positions whereby the same will reengage progressively from left to right during sealing thereof with said pole faces.
at I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an electromagnetically operated device, in combination a winding, an armature member to be attracted thereby, said armature member including a plurality of yielding magnetic parts to be arrested successively during movement of said armature member into its attracted position.
2. In an electromagnetically operated device, in combination, a. winding, an armature member to be attracted thereby, said armature member including a plurality of yielding magnetic parts adapted to be flexed to different degrees duringmovement of said armature member into its attracted position and to be arrested successively in such position.
3. In an electromagnetically operated device, in combination, a winding, an armature member to be attracted thereby and a core for said winding to be engaged by said armature member upon attraction thereof, said armature member including a plurality of yielding magnetic parts adapted to be arrested successively by said core.
4. In an electromagnetically operated device, in combination, a winding, a core therefor and a movable armature member for said winding adapted to seal with said core upon attraction thereof, said armature member including a plurality of spring laminations arranged with their faces at substantially right angles to the line of travel of said armature and adapted to be flexed to different degrees upon attraction thereof.
5. In an electromagnetically operated device, in combination, a winding, a core therefor, and a movable armature memberfor said winding adapted to seal with said core upon attraction thereof, said armature member including a plurality of spring laminations arranged with their faces at substantially right angles to the line of travehof said armature, and adapted upon attractlon towards said core to, assume positions whereby the same are arrested succesively by sald core.
6. In an electromagnetically operated switch, in combination, co-operating sta tionary and movable contacts, an operating lever for the latter, and operating means for said lever including a winding, a magnet frame therefor and an armature for said winding secured to said lever and adapted to seal with said frame, said armature including a plurality of spring laminations arranged with their faces at substantially right angles to the line of travel of said arm and adapted to be flexed to different degrees upon attraction thereof.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
ERWIN STOEKLE.
