To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Joanna H. Com, a citizen of the United States, residing at Penacook, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Counting Devices, of which t he following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of an electrically operated counting device, which is adapted to be actuated by the machine producing articles to be counted, and embodies amongst other features a-(pair of toothed wheels adapted to be actuate by an electricall operated pawl, the rotation of .said whee s controlling the movement of hands and the latter co-operating with the graduated dial to register the count.
The chief characteristic of the invention resides in the particular construction of the pawl and toothed wheels, whereby the paw the latter singly and in unison, the general compactness and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detaildescription is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, com bination and arrangement of the various parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
The counter forming the subject matter of my invention comprises a base 10 which supports in spaced parallel relation thereto a graduated dial 11. Rotatably fitted between the base 10 and the dial 11 is a sleeve 12 upon which is mounted a small hand 13 for movement over the face of the dial, while journaled within the sleeve is a shaft 14 which also has associated therewith a co-operates with the wheels to rotate hand 15 for movement across the face of the dial 11. v
The movement of these hands is controlled by a air of toothed wheels 16 and 17 respectivey which are of the same diameter and closely associated, the wheel 16 being mounted on the sleeve 12 while the wheel 17 is carried by the shaft 14. The
teeth of these wheels are of uniform div mensions with the exception of one tooth on the wheel 17. which tooth is than any other tooth and is indicated at 18. The purpose of this will be presently described. A pawl 19 is utilized to rotate the toothed wheels 16 and 17, the pawl 19 ing' associated with a pivoted lever 20' WhlCh at one end is o eratively connected with the core 21 movable through a solenoid 22, so that when the latter is energized the core 21 is actuated to move the pawl in a manner to rotate one of the toothed wheels. A sprin 23 bears a ainst the pawl 19 to hold the atter in e ective engagement with the teeth of said 'wheel. The base 10 has associated therewith two binding posts 24 to accommodate the terminals 25 of the conducting wires leading from a switch 26 of any suitable construction which may be operated by a suitable part of the machine in order to make and break the circuit. A pair of springs 27 have their free ends designed to fit the teeth of the wheels 16 and 17 and operates to prevent retrograde movement of the latter.
The counting device is mounted at any suitable location by means of a bracket 28, and a switch arranged to be actuated to make and break the circuit by the machine producing the articles to be counted. When the circuit is closed, the solenoid is energized and the core thereofmoved in a proper direction to actuate the pawl 19. It will be noted that this pawl is formed with a long and short tooth 19. and 19 the former engaging the teeth of the wheel 17 while the short tooth 19 of the pawl is spaced from the teeth of the wheel 16. Consequently, when the pawl is actuated in the manner above stated the Wheel is moved one degree which in turn moves the hand 15 one degree over the face of the dial 11. This operation is continued with each make and break of the circuit until the wheel 17 has made one complete revolution, during which time the wheel 16 remains stationary. When the cut deeper wheel 17 has completed its revolution, the long tooth 19 drops into the space beneath the deep tooth 18 of said wheel 17, which pe .mits the other tooth 19 square of the awl to engage the teeth of the wheel 16. $onsequently with the next 010s of the circuit, both of the wheels are move one dein unison, the wheel 16 moving the $1 13 one degree over the face of the dial 11. The pawl then moves out of engagement with the long tooth and the operation is re ated with the wheel 17 rotating indepen itly of the wheel 16 until it completes another revolution. Consequently, if there were one hundred teeth on the wheel 17, one hundred would be registered on the face of the dial with each revolution of this wheel, and when the wheel 16 has completed its revolution it would register 10000. The device is not only accurate in its computations,
but is extremely simple in construction embodying but few parts which are compactly arr as shown.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such cha es may be resorted to when desired as, all within the scope of what is claimed.
What I claim is:
A counting device including a casing, a pair of independently rotatable toothed d1sks journaled in the casing, and independently movable indicating hands actuated by the disks, a dial over which the indicatin hands v move, a vertically arranged solenoid aving a vertical bore, and a core being normall pending from the lower end of the solenoi a horizontally arranged actuating arm havi one end pivotally mounted in the casing, a hnk connection between'the free end of the arm and the upper end of the core and awls carried by the arm and engageable wit the toothed disks.
