Description

G. F. WEST June 24 1924.
lled April 18, 1922 Patented .lune 24, 1924.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE.
GEORGE FREDERIC WEST, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
x IBROOM.
Application vled AAipril 18, 1922. Serial No. 554,580.
city of New York, borough of Manhattan, Y
in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Broom, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.y
This invention relates to improvements in brooms, an object thereof being to provide a double ended broom connected to a handle in such a manner that the handle may be reversed when one end of the broom head becmes worn and the other end of the head use A further object is to provide a broom of this character, which will be by virtue of its construction, extremely durable and serviceable in use, a broom which will not require any specially constructed handle, and one which will be simple and practical in construction, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a view in side elevation of my improved broom;
Figure 2 is a similar view with parts of the," cloth covering broken away for clearness; and
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fi 1re 2. p
Referring in detail to the drawings,v it will be seen that the head of my improved broom is composed of a number of independent bundles 1 of broom corn or some similar material, these bundles being bound by wire 2, or other suitable iiexible devices at their intermediate vportions to provide two bushy ends. The bundles 1 are maintained side by side in operative position by the use of ay pair of encircling wire members 3, 3 wrapped around the intermediate' portions of all of the bundles.
Transverse tie wires 4 connecting the opposite sides of the encircling wires 3, 3 lend rigidity and strength to the construction of the broom head, both the tieV wires and the wires 3 serving to tightly bind the intermediate portions of the bundles and to hold the bundles together.
Thetwo pairs of intermediate tie wires 5 provide a space between them for the insertion of any suitable handle, said handle passing between the two tie wires 5 and between the wires 3 and being attached rmly to the wires 3 by securing devices 7 passed through suitable loops or eyes 8 formed in the rintermediate portions ofthe wires 3 for their reception. It will be evident that the broom handle may be inserted from either end of the broom head and that the bundles provide two bushy-sweeping ends, either of which, may be selectively used. Preferably those ends of the bundles which are not ticular method of forming the broom heads,
but I have found it very convenient to compress the intermediate portions of the bundles simultaneously in a single mold leaving a space for the insertion of the handle. The wires 2 and-3 may be wrapped around the bundles while they are still in the mold.
I have illustrated one of the preferred embodiments of the invention, but numerous slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from the invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth, but shall consider rmyself at liberty to make `such slight changes and alterations kas fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended' claims.
I claim: y
1.v A broom including a plurality of bristlesV combined to form a broom head capable of 'being reversed to'permit of the use vof either end of the broom for sweeping, a said binding velement extending`V about bristles medially of the ends thereof, a'plurality of bracing elements joining said binding member at opposite points and extending transversely between the bristles of said head, a broom handle capable of being insnugly accommodating theY serted into` either end of said broom head and between adjacent bracing` elements, and means engaging lsaid binding .member and extending through said handle for remove `ably securing the latter in operative position with respect to the head.
2. A, broom including a plurality of bristles combined to form ya heed capable of being reversed to permit of the use of either end of the broom for sweeping, a pair of spaced binding` members encircling said bristles medielly of the ends thereof; a
plurality of tie wires joining oppositely disposed points of eachoi1 said binding members and extending transversely between the bristles of said head, and a handle capable of being inserted into either end of said head and between adjacent and corresponding tie Wires carried by both of said binding members` and means removably engaging each binding member and extending; through said handle to maintain the latter' in operative position ,with respect to the head.
GEORGE FREDERIC WEST.
