To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE E. MILLER, a
citizen of' the United States, residing at Etna; in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful'lmprovements in Taps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to taps, and its prin-' cipal object is to provide improved means no for automatically collapsing and expanding the threading-dies thereof. In the particular embodiment shown I have applied my invention to the tap shown and described in my Patent No. 1.3 12,". 54. granted to me June 8, 1920.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig." 1 is a side elevation of a tap containing my improvements; Fig. 2, a side elevation or' 'the tap rotated aniallyforty-five 2o degr'e'esfrom its position shown in Fig. 1,

On the drawings,v 1 is the spindle of a tapping machine having the bearing-2 and the flange 8 to which the flange 4 on the body ,5 of the tap issecured by bolts, one marked 6 being shown.
The body 5 has a number of longitudinal holes 7, opening laterally at their front ends into the slots 8 containing the threading dies or chasers 9, and at their rear ends into M) the slots 10- which receive the arms 11 of the slides 12 which are movable lengthwise in the holes 7. The body 5 is surrounded by the adjusting collar 13 having the internal circular groove 14 to receive "the outer ends of the arms 11, whereby, when the collar is moved forwardly from the position shown in v the drawings itwill push the slides 12 also. The latter have their outer faces inclined and dovetailed to the dies 9 in the usual man- 50 ner,' so that the slides 12 will when moving outwardly push the threading dies outwardly' into working position, and when moving inwardly will pull the dies inwardly to their collapsed position. The cap 14 is 55 secured to the front end of the body 5 by the screws 15 and'form a front wall for the dies 9.
The body 5 is provided with the lugs 16, each supporting a cutter 17 for o'perati'ng 'on the ends of the articles at the conclusion of threading operations, 7 18 representing the screws for holding the cutters in the lugs.
The apparatus so far as now described is the same as shown in my said patent, but the presentinvention is not necessarily combined with the precise apparatus of the said patent. l V i .T
19 is a collar slidable on the body 5 between the flange l and thelugs 16. The collar 19has a front threaded portion 20 on which the rear end of the collar 'l3 is screwed to provide a means for adjusting the throwof the slides 12 and consequently the throw of the dies 9. The body 5 is provided with the slots 2 l-for the cross-pin 22 which has its ends seatedin the slots 23 in the front end of theportion 20 of the collar 19 and beneath the threaded partof the collar 13. The'pin is biased to the 'rear end of the slots 21 by the spring 24 in the axialhole 25 in the rear endof thefibody 5. One end of the spring is fastened to the pin and the other is secured to the screw 26 which extends through thebushing 27 in the inner end of thebody-o and is provided with the nut 28 bearing on the outer face of the'bushing. r i a 'The body 5 has two diametrically opposite slides 29 having their rear endsbeveled rearwardly and toward the aXis'of the body 5 and'lying beneath the collars-13 and 19, but terminating rearwardl ylnear the radial holes 30 which extend from' theperiphery ofthe collar 19 to the grooves 31, in which the slides 29 work. These grooves have abrupt rear ends or shoulders 32. Dogs or catches 33 have radial movements in the holes 30 and have the rearfaces of their inner ends movable into the grooves 31 and are engageablewith the shoulders -32 to lock the collars 13 and 19 and their slides 12 and the dies 9 in their outermost positions. The catches are pressedinwardly bypthe springs 34 seated in holes in the catches and resting against the flange of the' cap 35 which telescopes over the collar 19 "so as to cover the outer'ends of the holes, the disk portion of the cap covering the rear sides of the holes. The cap is secured to the collar 19 by the screws 36.;The catches have cally causing the resetting of the dies andlocking means during the retreat of the body.
2. In a threading device, a longitudinally movable body, means locking the dies in expanded positions, means causing the collapse of the dies upon release of the locking means, an element movable with the body, and means whereby, when the element is stopped during the advance of the body, the locking means is automatically released, andcwhen the element is stopped during the retreat of the body, the locking means is automatically reset. 7
3. In a tapping device having a longitudinally movable body holding collapsible threading dies, means automatically collapsing the dies when the body has advanced a predetermined distance, means automatically expanding the said dies upon the retreat of the body a predetermined distance, and means releasable by the first means for locking the dies in expanded positions.
4. In a tapping device having a longitudinally movable body holding collapsible threading dies, means slidable longitudinally of the body for expanding and collapsing the dies, a spring-pressed catch carried by the said means, a stop engageable by said catch to prevent the collapsing of the dies, a spring tending toactuate the first means to collapse the dies when the catch is released from the stop, means for automatically tripping the catch when the body has advanced a predetermineddistance, and means for automatically resetting the said parts with the catch locking against the stop when the body has retreated a predetermined distance.
5. In a tapping device having longitudinal and axially-rotatable movements, a longitudinally movable body, collapsible dies carried thereby, slides carried by the body for expanding and collapsing the dies, means slidable on the body for moving the slides, a spring-pressed catch carried by the said means, a stop on the body arranged to be engaged by the catch and hold the said means in position at which the dies are expanded, a slide automatically movable to release the catch from the slot when the tapping device has moved forwardly a predetermined distance, a spring for moving the said means rearwardly as soon as the catch has been released, and means for automatically moving the said means to locking position upon a movement of the said body rearwardly a predetermined distance.
6. In a tapping device having longitudinal and axially-rotatable movements, a longitudinally movable body, collapsible dies carried thereby, slides carried by the body for expanding and collapsing the dies, means slidable on the body for moving the slides, a springpressed catch carried by the said means, a stop on the body arranged to be engaged by the catch and hold the said means in position at which the dies are expanded, a slide automatically movable to release the catch from the slot when the tapping device has moved forwardly a predetermined distance, a spring for moving the saidmeans rearwardly as soon as the catch has been released, means for automatically moving the said means to locking position upon a movement of the said tapping device rearwardly a predetermined distance, and means for antomatically moving the tripping slide from tripping position to permit the catchto be reseated when the body retreats a predetermined distance.
7. In a tapping device having longitudinal and axially-rotatable movements, a longitudinally movable body, collapsible dies carried thereby, slides carried by the body for expanding and collapsing the dies, means slidable on the body for moving the slides, a spring-pressed catch carried by the said means, a stop on the body arranged to be engaged by the catch and hold the said means position at which the dies are expanded, a slide automatically movable to release the catch from the slot when the tapping device has moved forwardly a predetermined distance, a spring for moving the said means rearwardly as soon as the catch has been re leased, means for automatically moving the said means to locking position upon a movement of the said body rearwardly a predetermined distance, and means for adjusting the throw of the die-operating slides.
8. In a tapping device having longitudinal and axially-rotatable movements, a longitudinally movable body, collapsible threading dies carried by the body, slides carried by the body for expanding and collapsing the dies, a slidable rotatable collar on the body at the rear of the dies and connected to operate the slides as the collar moves, a second collar slidable on the body and having a threaded connection to the first collar, a catch carried by one of the collars, a stop carried by the body to lock the said one of the collars when the dies are expanded, a spring urging the catch to locking position, a pin extending through a longitudinal slot in the body and seated in the second collar,
a spring to draw the pin rearwardly when the catch is released, means for automatically releasing the catch at the close of a threading operation, and means for automatically resetting the parts in locked position when the body retreats a predetermined distance.
9. In a tapping device having longitudinal and axially-rotatable movements, a longitudinally movable body, collapsible threading dies carried by the body, slides carried by the body for expanding and collapsing the'dies, a deviceslidable on the body at the rear of the dies and connected to operate the slides as the device moves, a catch carried by, the device, a stop carried by the body to lock the device when the dies are expanded, a spring urging the catch to locking position, a pin extending through a longitudinal slot in the body and seated in the device. a
