What I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The method of manufacturing a packing element comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending prises taking a cylinder, winding on. one of its surfaces an angular stri and a holding piece, and fastening the strip and piece together'and to the cylinder.-
2. The method of manufacturing a packing element comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending teeth which comprises taking a cylinder, winding on one of its surfaces simultaneously, an angular strip and a holding ribbon, and then permanently fastening the strip, ribbon, and cylinder together.
3. The method of manufacturing a packing element comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending teeth which comprises taking a cylinder, cutting a continuous spirally extending groove in one of its surfaces, winding an angular strip in said groove, and fastening said strip to said cylinder.
4. The method of manufacturing a pack in element comprising a plurality of annu ar, radially extending teeth which comprises taking a cylinder, cutting a continuous, spirally extending groove in one of its surfaces, winding an angular stri and a holding piece simultaneously in sai groove, and fastening said strip, piece and cylinder together.
5. The method of manufacturing a packelement comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending teeth, which comprises taking a cylinder, spirally winding thereon simultaneously a U-shaped strip and a holding piece between the legs of said strip, and fastening said strip, piece, and cylinder together.

10. The method of manufacturing a packing element which comprises providing a carrying member having grooves in one of its surfaces, placing thin metal strip material edgewise in the grooves, fastening it therein in a temporary manner, and then permanently fastening it therein by fusion of metal.
11. The method of manufacturing a pack ing element which comprises providing a carrying member having a continuously extending groove in one of its surfaces, fastening a. strip of thin metal edgewise in said groov in a temporary manner, and then permanently fastening it therein by fusion of metal.
