The L-shaped strip such as are usedto prevent leakage between and the holding piece 9 may be wound on a rotating shaft and an adjacent wall sleeve 6 at the same time either manually I through which the shaft'passes and particuby means of a suitable windin machine, larly to packings of the type comprising a or by other, suitable means, an after heplurality of thin-edged annular teeth or mg wound thereon to form a packing memprojections which are carried by the rotating er of the desired length, the L-shaped strip member and pack "against the surface of the n h lding piece are fastened together and adjacent. wall, or which are carried by the 0 sleeve 6 by fusion of metal as by Welding wall and pack against the outer surface of r zing, orthe like, or by other suitab 20, the shaft. Packings of this character are means well known and are termed labyrinth or y e g g ng m n I O n cellular packings. a packing element which is very simple to Th bj t f th r t i v mi j t manufacture and in which the annular teeth provide an improved method qf -imanufac 7 m y be made RS together and as turing pachings f th t f d t thin as found desirable, the part of the L vhich is gconomical carry out, and Shaped Stl'lp wlnch fOl'lllS the thlH'QdgQd means of which a large number of thin- .teeill 7 ng fiflished t0 the desired thickedged annular teeth or projections may be HE S PIIOI to be 1n g wound on sleeve 6. provided in a comparatively shortspace. ' it will be understood that the specific steps described are only illustrative and that the method may be carried out by such steps as come within the terms of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. The method of manufacturing a packing element comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending prises taking a cylinder, winding on. one of its surfaces an angular stri and a holding piece, and fastening the strip and piece together'and to the cylinder.-
2. The method of manufacturing a packing element comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending teeth which comprises taking a cylinder, winding on one of its surfaces simultaneously, an angular strip and a holding ribbon, and then permanently fastening the strip, ribbon, and cylinder together.
3. The method of manufacturing a packing element comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending teeth which comprises taking a cylinder, cutting a continuous spirally extending groove in one of its surfaces, winding an angular strip in said groove, and fastening said strip to said cylinder.
4. The method of manufacturing a pack in element comprising a plurality of annu ar, radially extending teeth which comprises taking a cylinder, cutting a continuous, spirally extending groove in one of its surfaces, winding an angular stri and a holding piece simultaneously in sai groove, and fastening said strip, piece and cylinder together.
5. The method of manufacturing a packelement comprising a plurality of annular, radially extending teeth, which comprises taking a cylinder, spirally winding thereon simultaneously a U-shaped strip and a holding piece between the legs of said strip, and fastening said strip, piece, and cylinder together.

U-shaped 7. The method of manufacturing a packfastening a continuous strip of thin metal edgewise in the groove.
9. The method of manufacturing a pack ing element which comp-rises providing a carrying member having a continuously extending groove in one of its surfaces, and fastening a continuous strip of thin metal edgewise in th roove by fusion of metal.
10. The method of manufacturing a packing element which comprises providing a carrying member having grooves in one of its surfaces, placing thin metal strip material edgewise in the grooves, fastening it therein in a temporary manner, and then permanently fastening it therein by fusion of metal.
11. The method of manufacturing a pack ing element which comprises providing a carrying member having a continuously extending groove in one of its surfaces, fastening a. strip of thin metal edgewise in said groov in a temporary manner, and then permanently fastening it therein by fusion of metal.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of February, 1920.
