VALVE-SPRING LIFTER.

Be it known that I, JONATHAN VoLz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hildreth, in the county of Franklin and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve- Spring Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionl relates to valve spring lifters, and more particularly to multiple valve spring lifters. ,f 1
An object of the invention is the provision of a simple device for lifting the valve springs of L-head engines and l retaining them in raised position.
In the present invention, I provide an angular plate having slots adapted to receive the valve stems, a supporting member, and means for raising said angular plate with respect to the supporting member.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for retaining the device on the engine block.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown one embodiment of the invention. In this showing;

Referring to the drawings the reference numeral 1 designates generally a plate having a portion 2 arranged at an angle to the body portion and provided with a plurality of slots 3. This plate is provided with a projecting member 4 in the form of a block which is adapted to -be received in a slot 5 formed in a plate 6 adapted to be arranged adjacent the body portion of the plate 1. The plates are retained in the desired position by means of a cotter pin 7 or other fastening element received in the block 4. It will be apparent that the plate 1 may be adjusted with respect to the plate 6 by changing the position of the block 4 in the slot 5. The plate 6 is provided with a pair of outer depending legs 8 and an intermediate leg 9. The end of the intermediate leg is curled, as at 10, and is provided with a terminal 11 arranged substantially parallel to the plate. A bolt or shaft 12 extends through this terminal and through the body portion of the leg. This bolt is provided with a nut 13 on its outer end and with anv eccentric 14 on its inner end. The eccentric, as shown, is arranged below the angular portion 2 'of the plate 1. As shown, the eccentric is providedy with a flattened portion 15. The lower ends of the legs 8 are slit, as shown, and provided with inwardly extending portions or feet 16. The legs are further provided with downwardly extend-y ing portions 17 extending.. beyond the feet.
The upper corners of the plate are also pro-K vided with inwardly extending arms 18.`
In Figure 2 of the drawings, I have shown the` invention applied to an engine in operative position. 'As shown, the feet 16 and arms 18 engage portions of the engine block to retain the plate 6 in position. The lower feet hook over the lower iiange 19 of the engine block and the arms 18 bear against the upper flange 2O of the engine block. The plate 1 is slipped into position with the slots 3 receiving the valve stems 21, the plate or iange 2 being arranged beneath the springs 22. By turning the eccentric, the plate 1 is raised to the dotted line position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, compressing the spring 22 and permitting the pins in the valve stems to be taken out. When the eccentric is turned to raise the plate,I the iiattened portion 15 engages the lower face of the flange or extension 2, retaining the plate in raised position as long as desired. After the pins have been taken out, the valve may be ground in any desired manner with the tool in its original position during the entire operation. The pins may then be reinserted and the valve springs lowered to proper position by turning the eccentric.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: f
1. A valve spring lifter comprising a supporting plate adapted to be secured to an engine block, a second plate movably mounted thereon, said second plate being provided with an o'set portion having a slot to receive the valve stem, and means for adjusting said second plate with respect to said first plate.
2. A valve spring lifter comprising -a supporting member adapted to be secured to an engine block, a plate inovably mounted thereon, said plate being'provided with an extension having a slot for the reception of the valve stem, and an eccentric carried by said supporting member andy engaging said plate to permit adjustment thereof.
' 3. A valve spring lifter comprising a supporting plate adapted to be secured to an engine block, said plate being provided with a slot, a second plate disposed adjacent thereto, and provided with a projection extending through said slot, said second plate being further provided with a slot adapted to receive the valve stein, and means for adjusting said second plate on said supporting plate.

supporting plate adapted to be secured to an engine'block, saidv plate being provided with a slot, a second plate disposed adjacent thereto, and provided with a projection eX- tending through said slot, said second plate being further provided with a slot adapted to receive a valve stem, and an eccentric carried by said supporting plate and engaging said second plate to permit adjustment thereof.
5. In a device of the character described, a supporting plate, said plate being provided with legs arranged adjacent each end, feet mounted on the lower ends of said legs, said feet being adapted to engage the lower flange of an engine block, inwardly extending arms arranged at the top of said plate and adapted to engage the upper flange of an engine block, a second plate arranged adjacentsaid supporting plate, said second plate being provided with slots adapted to receive the valve stems, a shaft carried by said supporting plate, and an eccentric mounted on said shaft and engaging said second plate.
