To all `who/m may concern Be lit knoivn that l, DANinL EDWARD WA- '.riins, a .subject of the King oif'Great Britain, residing-in the city of St. Paul, in the State of llliinnesota, United States of america, have Iinveiited certain new and useful Improvements in Display Signs, vofivhich the following isthe specification.
The invention relatesto improvements in display signsand `an object ofthe invention is to provide a moving signwhic-h by .virtue of its movement Willattiact the attention of the public, Athereby rendering this sign a valuable Aone for displaypurposes.
A further object ofthe invention isto provide asign which cany be adapted for out doors and which when once set in operation willconti nue lto kWork `Without :further attention. f
infin-ther and more specific object ofthe inventionis Ato improve and sinu'iliffy the construction of the sign @previously Lpatented by me and as @fullyslioivii and described `in yUnited States Patent No. 1,3137484, datednugust ll9tli,l9l9,such impiovenii-xnts giving ine thesaine iunouiit of sign changing with :il-less number of lmoving signs and consequently less moving parts. lilith the above more important objects in view the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a front vieiv of my complete sign board.
Fig. S2 is a horizontal sectional vieu through the board with parts broken avvay and the shifter shown in plan view.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the sev-` eral figures.
ln the following disclosure l have a plurality of stationary sign boards and one shifting sign board, and as the manner of moiinting the moving or shiftingsign was fully disclosed in my prior patent Iliavenot considered it necessary to enter into such structural details and accordingly for the purpose of this description, it Will be understood that the shifting sign board is suitablyy mounted, suoli as in the manner described in such prior patent, or in any other suitable Way, which will permit it to slide backwardly and lforvviifrdly Within the sign board posed end signs'l2 and 13, the latter signs each having.approximately .the saine exposure area Las .the :forwardlydisposed central r sign i.
.Referring ,to `Figure 2, itivill be observed that there is a space orfpassage reservedbetiveenthe `front and rear signs. 'ln `this passage Llocate a signrboardill.Whichis supported `inthe .frame l l'for endivise sliding movement ivithintlieiframe. i'lhe sign board ltis practically tavicetheflength of the sign beard 7 and. provides tivo `exposure areas for advertising' or. similar material. `'According to this arrangement it Will be apparent that when one exposure area of the moving sign is to the rear of the sign boardy 7 the other exposure area of the said sign board is in front of the sign board 13, or that l2, depending upon whether the moving sign is at the right or left hand end of its travel. In Figure 2 the moving sign is shown as at the right hand end of its travel.
Consequently, the advertising material appearing on the sign boards l2 and 7 and on the right hand end of the moving sign lt will he exposed. Should the moving sign be shifted to the left hand end the advertising material on the sign boards 7 and land on the left hand end ofthe sign board 14 will be exposed.
Any suitable means can be provided for alternately shifting the sigiiboard 14 Within the frame, such means preferably being arranged so that it is entirelyautomatic, and such that after it has brought the shifting sign to either end of the frame it vvill` permit the said sign to remain there for a short period prior to reversing and passing to the other end of the frame.
In the present disclosure I have shown a device which I term a shifter and Which is indicated generally by the reference numeral 15. The details of this shifter are not herein described as they form the subject matter of a further application. It embodies, however, an electric `motor 16, a
drivingV belt 17, alternately drivenY belts of the cables winding off the drum, whilst the other is Winding on.
Accordingly, when the shifter is in operationthe moving sign will be shifted backwardly and forwardly withinjthe frame to alternately expose the signs thereon and to alternately cover and expose the stationary end signs. Obviously, this arrangement of sign boards gives just as much variation in the sign exposure as the sign shown in my former patent and as I only have one shifting sign the structure is considerably simplified.
`What I Claim as my invention is:
1. In a display sign, a centrally disposed forwardly positioned stationary sign board, rearwardly disposed stationary end sign boards and a horizontally movable sign board mounted to the rear of the central sign board and in advance of the end sign boards and designed to be projected alternately infront of the end sign boards.
2. In a display sign, a forwardly disposed centrally positioned stationary sign board, rearwardly disposed stationary end sign boards and a horizontally movable sign board associated with the stationary sign boards and of twice the length of the stationary sign boards, said moving sign board being designed to be alternately shifted in a horizontal direction to alternately expose theopposite ends thereof in front of the en d sign boards.
3. In a display sign, a supporting frame, a central sign board supported by said frame, endsign boards supported by the frame at opposite sides of and slightly to the rear of the central sign board and a shifting sign mounted in the frame for endwise movement in the space reserved between the central and end sign boards, said shifting sign board being twicesthe length of the stationary sign boards.V
4. In a display sign, equi-length central and end stationary sign boards, the said central sign board being located in a dierent vertical plane to'that containing the end sign boards, and a `movable sign board contained in a vertical plane positioned between the vertical planes containing the central and end signs, said movable sign board being adapted to beV shifted `endwise to alternately pass the ends thereof Vfrom behind the central sign and expose the same alternately in front of the endv signs.
Signed at Minneapolis, Minnesota, .this 9th day of October,1922.
DANIEL EDWARD WATERS.
In the presence of ELIZABETH WATERS,
MiNNIE V. QUINN.
