To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps and has special reference to pump mechanism particularly adapted for pumping syrups at soda water fountains.
Pumps of this character as disclosed in United States Patentsy Nos. 1,072,636 and 1,247,708 issued to me September 9, 1913, and November 27, 1917, respectively, and which comprise a unitary structure adapted to be removablymounted on an open topped container, have long been known.
Such unitary pump structures comprise a container cover7 an open topped cylinder depending from the cover and adapted to be immersed in the liquid in the container, a delivery pipeleading from ythe bottom of thev cylinder through the cover, a piston rod mounted in thek cover and connected with a piston in the cylinder andnormally spring held at the upper limit of its movement.
The object of my present invention is to improve and simplify the construction of such structures whereby the devices can be more readily manufactured yin large quantities by means of the more modern manufacturing processes, whereby the several pumps can be morereadilyassembled with the several parts properly aligned and con` nected and whereby the cost of production shall be reduced.
My invention will be more readily under" stood by reference to the' accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and inwhichzy Figure 1, is a side elevation,partly in cent-ral verticalsection of a pump structure made in accordance with my invention; and

In said drawings 10 represents a cover adapted to, be appliedto ,a container in which the syrup is held and which cover carries or has attached thereto 'the several parts of the structure so that the structure is a self contained unit capable of being placed upon orremoved from a container.
The cover 10, as shown, is a ylat diskll provided at its edge with a depending flange 12and is preferably stamped `out of sheet metal. This disk is perforated at two points, one 13 to receive a delivery pipe 14 and theother 15 to receive a memberl` in which-` a piston rod 17 is mounted and guided. v f
The delivery pipe 14 has a lower end 18 which depends a suitable distance and is preferably cast integrally with an open topped cylinder 19. Possibly more inventive thought has been expended in devising means for suitably, rigidly and durably connecting the cylinder with 'the cover than on any other part of these pumps.
In modern'manufacturing processes, it is the aim to eliminate all special or individual litting or aligning and to produce each part in quantities ready to be assembled into detail or part structures which are adapted to be easily assembled and connected to produce the linished device. Such is one of my objects in this present instance.
`For rigidly mounting the cylinder 19( upon the cover 10, I preferably make use of the delivery pipe 14 as oneconnector, and I preferably cast with the cylindera rod or standard 20 opposite to and' extending pan allel with the delivery pipe. I provide a cross connecting plate 21 having a nozzle` 22 for receiving the upper end ofthe rod 20, a central opening 23 adapted to register with the opening 15 in the` cover and an opening 24 for receiving the delivery pipe 14. The delivery pipe 14 has an outwardly Erica] inclined delivery end or spout 25, prefer ably cast solid with the pipe, and this adds n `to the `difculty of producing the structure.
The upper end of the brace rod 20 isy rigidly connected to the plate 22 preferably by riveting and soldering, and for connecting the delivery pipe to the plate I provide the pipe with a rigid shoulder 26 against which `I clamp the plate 21. For this clamping I make the part 27 of the delivery pipe just abovethe shoulder 26 ofsomewhat enlarged diameter and screw thread it to receive a clamping nut 28, the nozzle part y25 being small enough in diameter to permit the nut 28to slide freely onto the part 27. u
In assembling the parts the plate 22 is first secured in position to the upper end of the brace rod 20, and thenthe cover 10 is entered over the nozzle 25 and `slid down to place with its top 10 flat against thefplate dent to operation,

21, then the nut 28 is put on and screwed down thus clamping the cover 10 and the plate 22 tightly together andv against the shoulder 26 on the delivery pipe.
A second point of connection ol the cylinder structure with the cover is necessary in order to properly and I provide this second connection in a very simple manner..
The member 16 which projects through the openings 165 and 23 is hollowtoY act as a container for a compression spring'ZU which surrounds the piston rod 17 and serves to` normally hold the rod and the piston 30 secured to its lower end at the upper limit of movement. rlhe member 16 is externally threaded to receive a clampingnut 31 which is adapted to be entered uponthe lower end of the member 16 and be screwed up against the under surface of the plate 21. For clamping the plate 21 and lthe cover 10 at this point, I provide the member 116 with a shoulder 32 spaced Jfrom the cover 10 sufhciently to provide space for an auxiliary f cover member 33' which is provided with an openingl `for the member 1'6 and al second opening 35 for the delivery pipe. This auxiliary cover member has a depending 'flange 36 su'lii'cientv only in height to contact with the cover 10 and provide space beneath it for the clamping nut 28. 'Ihe flange extends around the opening 34, and the opening 34 fits the member 1'6' just below the shoulder 32 so that when the clamping 'nut 31 is screwed home the plate 21, the cover 10 and ,the4 auxiliary cover 33 are all three tightly clampedL together between the nut 31 and the shoulder 32. The piston rod 17 A is provided with a shoulder 37 for contact with the lower end of the member 16 to limit the upward movement ofthe rod and piston.

Itis to be notedy that the opening 15 inthe cover for the member 1-6 is oiiiset from. the center, the pipe 18 being outside the cylinder 19 andthe braee'rodQ() extendingwithin the cylinder, and/that these two connecting membersare substantially centered in rela:- tion to thercover.. This construction assists inL the vrigid'.mounting oli` thecylinder on` the cover,A as it. permitsv the maximum: separation of the two points of connection with the withstand the strains inci-` cover and consequently the structure has a maximum of'rigidity in relation to its simplicity of construction.
As many modifications ol my invention will-readily suggest themselves to one skilled in the art, I do not limit or confine my inven` tion to the specific details of construction herein shown and described except within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a pump of the kind described, a cover', a cylinder adapted to be arranged below the cover, a delivery pipe extending from the cylinder and through the cover, a connecting plate beneath the cover, a brace rod disposed opposite to the delivery pipe and connecting the cylinder to the connecting plate, a nut on the delivery pipe and an opposed shoulder on the delivery pipe for clamping' the connecting plate and' cover together, a piston in the pump cylinder, a piston rod extending through the cover and connecting plate and connected at its lower end with said piston, and means surrounding the piston rod for tightly clamping the cover and connecting plate together.

3. In a; pump of the kind described, a cover, aL pump cylinder below the cover, two rigid connectors extending up from the cylinder, a connecting plate below the cover, the upper end of one of, said connectors being joined to said connectingplate, the other connecting member passing:r through boththe cover and connecting plate, and means for tightly clamping said second connecting member to the cover' and connectingl plate and clamping: the cover and connecting plate together, a piston rod guide member extending through the cover and the connecting plate arranged to retain these two members in registry, and means onl said guide member v.for tightlyv clamping, the cover and connect ing plate together.
