of St. Louis, in the count'yof St. Louisjand State f Missouri have invented a certain 'Improven Bon and spike Machine, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the die-block on which is held the blank for the spike or bolt, to the combined griper and shear,and tothe construction of the die-block with a countersunk part for the reception of the blank, the side of the countersink being chilled or provided with a steel cutter, as desired, so as to form the fixed blade of the cutter or shears, the movable jaw being formed by the edge of the griper or holding die, which, in its downguide-flange of the die-block, so that in its descent it will be guided by said flange to cut in a plane vertical to the axis of the blank, although the arm moves in the arc of a circle.
The operating mechanism of the machine will be the usual cam, eccentric, and crank movements, &cl., substantially as shown.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, showing the dies arranged for making bolts. Fig. 8 is a detail section, showing the construction of the dies for making spikes.

Said die-block is so arranged as to receive the blank-rod a from the rolls D D, into a guide-groove in its top face, the end k ofthe groove forming the fixed blade or jaw of the cutter. The objection to the griping and cutting die J descending in a circular line is, that it cuts oft' the ends of the bolt on a bevel, in which case not only would the point of the bolt be imperfect, but it would be almost impossible for the header to form a perfect head on the bolt; but by cutting the blank. in a line vertical with its axis, a perfect head can be formed by the header. There being no excess of metal on either side, the metal is spread evenly by the header, and the head is evenly balanced.
