T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LLOYD XV. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Wheeling, county of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Brick Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to brickmaking apparatus, and more specifically to an extrusion die for such apparatus.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a die for the heads of brick machines which may be adjusted to regulate the extent to which the column of clay is compacted and to compensate for wear.
A further object is to provide a die composed of sections which are readily adjustable to meet the compacting requirements of different clays.
A still further object is to provide a die of the character mentioned having novel and improved means providing for proper lubrication of the advancing clay column.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence is herein had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevationof a die embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a view partly in top plan and partly in horizontal section;
Figure 3 is a View partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section:
Figure 4 is a front elevation of the centrally disposed sections of the die arranged in working relation; and" Figure '5 is a section on line 5--5, Fig. 4.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates the head of a press of the general type employed inbrick machines in which a compressed column of clay is propelled forward to a traveling conveyor, said head being of hollow rectangular form and having a face plate 2 rigidly mounted upon its outer end. Also attached or otherwise disposedin fixed relation to the inner end of said head is a rectangular ring 3.
Arranged interiorly of the head 1 adjacent to each of the side walls thereof is a plurality of vertically disposed bars, herein disclosed as three in number, designated 4. 5 and 6. Also, arranged adjacentto the top and bottom walls of said head are bars 7, 8 and 9 corresponding in number with the side bars. The various bars referred to constitute members of a sectional die and are capable of adment of the latter.

The side members 4, 5 and 6 are snugly fitted in edge-to-edge relation between the face plate 2 and the ring 3 so as to form close joints with each other and with said plate and said ring. Each of said side members is adjustable toward and away from the adjacent side wall of the head 1, being carried by a plurality of stud bolts 10 which are directed through said side wall.
Set screws 11 directed through the side wall against the side member following adjustment of the latter by means of the bolts 10 cooperate with said bolts for bracing the member against outward movement.
The top members of the die have their opposite end portions overlying and resting upon the upper end of the side members 4, 5 and 6, while the bottom members have the lower ends of said side members resting thereon, as is best shown in Fig. 4.
Each of the side members 4, 5 and 6 has an inwardly and forwardly inclined disposition, as shown in Fig. 2, and the relative-positions of said members is such that the width of the passage between the opposite sides of the die is gradually reduced from the rear end to the front end of the die, thus providing for the gradual compacting of the clay column by reason of the reduction of its cross sectional area as it advances through the die. Further, the side member 5 has its rear edge seated against the adjacent edge of the member 4 with its inner face disposed slightly outward with respect to the plane of the inner face of said member 4. Likewise, the member 6 is disposed with its inner face slightly outward with respect to the plane of the inner face of the member 5. Thus, as is manifest, when the clay column advances from engagement with one of said side members to the next in series, it will engage the latter at a point remote from the joint between such members, leaving an open space or crotch of triangular form adapted for the reception of the steam introduced for lubricating the sides of the column. Since these portions are not directly contacted by the advancing clay column, slight triangular spaces are a-fiorded between them and the column allowing access of steam to the top and bottom surfaces of the column for lubricatingQ the latter.
Steam enters the space between the bottom wall of the head and the bottom membersbf the die through a pipe 13, thence passes around between the side walls of the head, and the side members of the die. Small transverse notches 14: provided in the end portions of the edge of said side members" permit. the passage of the steam to the crotches'between said members and the colufnn hereinb for e referred to; and from these notches the steam passes to the open spaces between; the top and bottom die members and the column. Thus, the entire outer surface of the column. is lubricated in its passage through the die. Escape of the steam is effected through a suitabl located pipeis. s The head 1 is composed of two alined sections which arerigidly attached by bolts 15. asshown, and; interposed between said sectionsis metal diaphragm 16 which extends invvardly andis received between the die sections 5 and6 and between the die sections 8 and; 9' for preventing the escape of steam in a forward direction. To provide for lubricationot the column as it passes by the outer endsections or members of the die, a small irregularly shaped notch or passage 17 permitting steam to bypass the diaphragm 16 is provided in the side memteat.
It will be manifest thatthe sectional die structure herein described provides not only for adjustment to meet the compacting requirements of different clays; and to compensate for wear, but also for convenient and inexpensive replacement or renewal of diet sec ons which become unduly worn.

An extrusion die tor brick machines, comprising in combination with a substantially rectangular hollow head, a plurality of complemental die members formil'lg each the top. bottom and sides of the die, the members composing each the top and bottom of the die, having their ends overlapping the ends of the members of said sides, each of the four groups of sections composing the die having the members thereof positioned in edge to edge group relation. and means for adjusting the positions of each of the members of the sides with respect to the adjacent walls of said head. a} 4. comprising, in combination with a substantially rectangular hollow head. a plurality of complemental die sections forming eac the top, bottom and sides of the die, the top and bottom sections having their ends overlapping the ends of said side sections, each of the four sides of the die having the sections thereof positioned in edge to edge relation and the sections of the sides being inwardly and forwardly inclined and adapted to be located with their inner fac'esin different planes, and means for adjusting said side sections with respect to the adjacent walls of the head.
5. An extrusion die for brick machines, comprising, in combination with a substantially rectangular hollow head, a' pin ality of complemental die sections forming each the top. bottom and sides of the die, the top and bottom sections having their ends overlapping the ends of said side sections, each of the four sides of the die having the sections thereof positioned in edge to edge relation and the sectionsof the sides being inwardly and forwardly inclined and adapted to be located with their inner faces in different planes whereby crotohcs will be formed between said side sections and the advancing clay column, means for adjusting said side sections with respect to the adjacent walls of said head. and means for introducing steam into said crotchcs.

An extrusion die for brick machines, comprising, in combination with a substantially rectangular hollow head, complemental top, bottom and side portions located inward of the walls of said head and relatively arranged to form a forwardly Q comprising, in combination with a substantially rectangular hollow head, complemental top, bottom and side portions located inward of the Walls of said head and relatively arranged to form a forwardly tapered passage through which the clay column is advanced, each of said port-ions being composed of a plurality of die members ar ranged in edge to edge relation, the side members having inwardly and forwardly inclined inner faces disposed in different planes 25 thereby to form crotches between said members and the clay column adjacent to the joints formed between said members, means for adjusting'said side members relative to the ad acent walls of the head, bracing 30 means for said members, the inner faces of the members of the top and bottom portions of the die having beveled portions whereby open spaces are formed between said faces and the column, a lubricant into said crotches and said spaces.
