WITNESSES ATTUBNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
'JOHN L. FORKEB, OF GOAL CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WQOD-SAWING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 149,736, dated April 14, 1874; application Sled March 11,1874.
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOHN L. Forman, of Coal City, in thecounty of Venango and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved VIood-Sawing` Machine; and I do hereview.
The invention relates to machines for sawin g wood; and consists in the features of improvement hereinafter described, and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A represents the frame on which. is supported the wood, and a a the recesses that receive it. Bis a sickleshaped clamp, having shank b and apertures b, the same turning,l on a cross-bolt, b2. C is a lever, pivoted at c, and connected with the clamp B by a strap, B', pivoted to each.' D is a vertical ratchet-bar, in whose teeth the lever is held when the clamp exerts pressure on the wood that is to be sawed. Logs or sticks of varying.;` size are thus readily and securely clamped and held inposition. E is a frame, in which is suspended the saw F on the pivoted and slotted bars G H. To the former the end of saw-handle is jointed, while the said handle also rests loosely in a notch of and slides on the cross-bar h of the other. The bar H is pivoted to a lever, l, that is itself fulcrumed on the driveeshaft J, and provided with an adjustable counterbalance-weight, K. L is a rod or bar attached laterally to the end of lever, and. held in the 'teeth ot' a ratchet, M. By this means the bar vH answers three several purposes-namely, to
support, guide, and lift the saw. The bar G is connected with the crank u ot' drive-shaft N bythe pitrnan O,Wl1ich is adjustable in one or more holes, g, so as to regulate the throw of the saw according1 to the size of Wood which is to be operated upon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination of the slotted bar G having` holes g, saw F, intermediate pitman 0, crank n with its ope-rating mechanism, and drive-shaft N with the slotted bar H, having' notched cross-bar h at the bottom and pivoted to one end of lever I, drive-shaft J, lever 1 provided With counterbalance-weight K, rod L, ratchet-teeth M, pivoted sickle-shaped clamp B, strap B', and lever C, all constructed to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
f JOHN L. FORKER.
