' Specification forming To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN E. NAsH, 0 Westerly, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain Improved Machine for Fluting, Milling or Circular Planing, and Gear-Cutting, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of mysaid invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon:
My invention relates to a single machine having, or being capable of carrying, a combination of parts which effect the different operations of such machines as are usually used singly for the above-named purposes.
In the accompanying drawing, forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is averticalsection of the machine without the work-holding devices. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4: represent detail views of parts of the machine, the construction and functions of which are hereafter fully described.
I will first describe the machine, as applied to the purpose of fluting, by which term I mean all kinds of cutting in parallel lines.
In all the views, similar letters of reference indicate similar parts of the invention.
A is the upright frame of the machine, provided with the central shaft B, driven through the agency of the bevel-gears a and b, the latter being mounted upon a horizontal shaft, 0, having bearings in the base of the upright frame. Upon the shaft 0 is a driving-pulley, D. The upper end of the vertical shaft B is provided with a bevel-gear, 0, which engages a similar gear, 0, upon a horizontal shaft, E, having a bearing in an arm, F, capable, when such is required, of a rotary movement around the perpendicular center of the machine. This rotary movement is imparted by hand, through means of the handle F. G represents a circular table, vertically and circumferentially adjustable, and adapted to be fixed to any height required, by means of the set-screw d. At one end of the horizontal shaft, which is reduced in diameter to receive it, is secured a serrated cutter or disk, 0, held to the shaft between washers c and e, and by the nut 0'.

3 represents a planof the work-holding devices, consisting of a slide-rest, H, and dovetailed slide H, the former carrying a straight, and the latter a circular, graduated scale. In the operation of fluting the circularregister only is used, and by it the cut is regulated with nicety and accuracy with relation to pitch of cut. Fig. 3 shows a reamer to be operated on, held between the stationary center f standin g upon the slide H, and the center f, also thereon, capable of rotation. Secured to the center f, at the inside of its bearing f, is a face-plate, g, which is notched to receive an end of a dog, h, slipped over the end of the reamer to be operated on, and secured thereto by the set-screw h. At the outer side of the bearing f is a disk-scale, i, used also as a hand-wheel, having registering-holes i, (Fig. 4,) into which a spring registering-arm, k,
tapped to the end of the dovetailed slide 11 enters, a pin, 2', being inserted in the arm for the purpose. 1 is a feeding-screw, revolving in bearings Z Z at the respective ends of the slide-rest. Y The feeding-screw is provided with the hand-wheel m. Secured to the slide H is a nut, K, that part of which forming the nut proper only resting upon instead of encircling the feeding-screw, thus admitting of its ready detachment therefrom by lowering the screw in one or both of its bearings, which are pivoted to admit of the movement. The sliderest, with all its accompanying parts, is firmly secured to a bracket, L, having a slot, 12, by
means of which the bracket, slide-rest, and its accompaniments, are held to the table G of the machine. Supposing the arm F, with its appendages, including the cutter e, to be secured in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the
bracket L is bolted to the table G by a simple the cutter e, in revolving, cuts a groove, the
length of which is governed by the longitudi nal movement given to the reamer by means of the feed-screw I and nut K. The length of I out having been accomplished, the reamer is revolved, and adjusted, through the agency of the circular register, to the pitch required in the next cut; and so on, until the entire circumference of the reamer, if necessary, is out.
In milling or circular planing the stock-hold- I being out while the gear is upon the 'same' mandrel upon which it was turned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The fundamental machine, consisting of the frame A, having the adjustable table Gr, upright shaft B, provided with the bevel-gear 0 and arm F, carrying a horizontal shaft, E, and bevel-gear 0, when the said horizontal shaft is used in connection with the serrated cutter c, all substantially as shown in Figs. 1
