Be it known that I, ANTHONY KosMow- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of IVayne and State of Michigan, have invented Vcertain new and useful Improvements in Oscillating-Twin- Cylinder Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in power driven force pumps, with special reference to styles used in connection with automobiles having motors of the air cooled type.
The main object of the invention is to provide a twin cylinder airpump directly connected to the cooling system of the motor, taking the air from the front of the vehicle, and driven by the fan shaft.
Another purpose is to provide a form of pump in which the cylinders are oscillatably mounted, thereby reducing the number of parts, together with the expense of their construction and reduction of friction.
These objects are accomplished by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of the. motor driven vehicle showing` the application of the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the pump, drawn to an enlarged scale, the section being taken on line 2-2 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Figure 4 is a similar sectional view taken in a different plane, on line 4 4 of Figure 3, the cylinders being in a diiferent position.
The device is attached to the front of an automobile in the .manner indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing, and comprises a casing 10 secured to a central support 11 having an extending base 12 fixed to any ccnvenient part of the vehicle, as at 13.
The casing is enlarged at its outer portion 14 and provided with an outer wall 15. Attached to the side of the enlargement 14 is a bracket 16 and mounted in the side walls of the casing enlargement is a shaft 17, one end extending into the bracket and having secured to it a pulley 18, driven by a belt 19 from the fan shaft 20, as shown in Figure 1.
The shaft 17, between the walls of the casing, is formed with opposed cranks 21 and 22 and is further supported by a bearing 23 at the end of an arm. 24 extending from the central support 11.
Rotatably engaged on the cranks are the ends of connection rods 25 and 26 having pistons 27 and 28 at their opposite inner ends, these pistons operating in cylinders 29 and 30 oscillatably mounted on trunnions 31 extending into the adjacent walls of the casing and central support 11 as best shown in Figure 3.
The lower ends of these cylinders are open and formed to a radius corresponding with the pivotal trunnion 31, to move in arcuate recesses 32 in and the base 11, the bottoms of these recesses are drilled to receive fitting 33 and 34 communicating with a pipe 35 leading to the motor to be cooled. Y
Air is admitted to the casing through the openings 36 and intoV the cylinders through the openings 37, no valves being required other than ordinary check valves in the discharge pipes leading from the cylinders to pipe 35.
In operation, when the motor is ruiming,
power is conveyed to the shaft, causing the pistons to successively suck in air and deliver it, under some compression, to the pipe 35, the arrangement being such' that an essentially steady current of air is provided.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pump comprising a casing, a support extending into said casing, a cylinder between each of the side walls of said casing and said support, trunnions extending intc said walls and support from each cylinder on which they may be oscillated, said cylinders making sweeping connections with the base of said casing, means for admitting air to said cylinders when said pistons are raised, valvedV means for conducting air from said cylinders into a pipe common to both, a shaft having a pair of cranks` connections between the cranks to said pistons and means exterior of said casing for driving said shaft.
