MECHANICAL AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed March 31, 1923. Serial No. 629,164.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, FELix Pfiofik, a citizen of Czechoslovakia, residing at Endicott,
in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanical toys and has for its primary object to provide a toy having sounding devices in the form of rolling tubular members constructed of bell metal with devices for moving the tubular members in a circuitous path.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a mechanical toy constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the flight arms carried by the endless chain for moving the bell rollers in a circuitous path,

Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on line III-III of Fig. 1, showing one of the guide wheels for the sprocket chain,
Fig. 41 is a side elevational view of one of the guide wheels, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View of one of the bell rollers.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a, mechanical toy including a supporting frame having spaced side members each including upwardly diverging bars 1 connected at their lower ends by cross braces 2 with a connecting head 3 at the upper ends of the bars constituting bearings for a transverse shaft 4. A cross brace 5 extends between the side bars 1 of each frame and has bearings supporting a cross shaft 7.
A wheel is secured upon each end of the two shafts 4 and 7 adjacent the inner side of the spaced frame members, each wheel being of octagonal formation as shown in Fig. 1 and having side flanges 8 and intermediate bearing surface 9 of octagonal formation as shown in Figs. 3 and 1. The wheels adjacent each frame member are alined, and the links 10 of endless sprocket chains being of a length identical with the octagonal faces of the bearing surface 9 pass thereover as illustrated. Each link 10 carries a flight arm 11 directed outwardly therefrom with a curved hook 12 formed at the outer terminal end thereof, a laterally directed hook 13 extending from the arm 11 adjacent the inner end. Driving means forthe sprocket chains includes a motor 14 supported on a bracket 15 as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 and being connected to the lower cross'shaft 7, the upper cross shaft 4 carrying a gear wheel 16 upon one projecting end thereof that meshes with agear wheel 17 fixed to a shaft 18 thatis journaled in the bracket 19 while the outerjend of the shaft 18 carries a pulley 20 over which a belt 21 passes for transmitting power'to a similar device or other machine.
An arcuate trough or receptacle22 is supported between the side frames by standards 23 'mountedupon the cross braces 2, while guide racks 24 of like curvature are secured as at 25 to the spaced frame members, the sprocket chains passing between the receptacle 22 and lateral guides 24 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A plurality of rollers 26 constructed of hell metal and being of hollow construction as illustrated in Fig. 5 are adapted to be moved through a circuitous path by the flight arms 11, the inner wall of the rollers 26 carrying spaced pins 27that-are engaged by rolling balls 28 freely movable therein to create the sounds of bells during the movement of the rollers. As shown in Fig. 1, the sprocket chains 10 moving in the direction of the arrows, the rollers 26 will be engaged by the lateral hooks 13 in traveling upwardly, and upon the downwardly moving side of the chains, the rollers are engaged by the terminal hooks 12. When the lowermost flight arms 11 pass through the spaces between the trough 22 and lateral guides 24, the rollers 26 are dropped upon the trough and lateral guides as shown in Figs. 1 and. 3, the rollers being again picked up by the lateral hooks or lugs 13 to be elevated as shown in Fig. 1.
To control the speed of operation of the toy, a brake device is associated with the cross shaft 7 the end of the shaft opposite the motor 14 carrying a fixed brake wheel 29 that is enclosed by a brake band 30, anchored at one end as at 31 upon the cross bar 5 of the side frame, the free end of the brake band carrying a lug 32 through which the threaded end 33 of an operating rod 34 extends, the rod being swiveled in bearings 35 and 36 carried by the cross brace 5 and side frame, respectively. As shown in Fig. 2, the bell rollers 26 may have any preferred type of design 26*, painted or otherwise applied thereto for increasing the attractiveness of the toy.
7 From the above detailed description of the device, it is believed that the construe tionand operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. In a toy of the type described, a frame, upper and lower shafts journaled therein, wheels fixed to said shafts, sprocket chains passing over said wheels, outwardly directed flight arms carried by the chains, spaced op-- positely directed hooks carried by each flight arm adapted for the raising and lowering of sounding rollers, and an arcuate trough carried by the lower end of the frame within. the path of travel of the flight arms for receiving the sounding rollers from one hook and presenting them to be picked up by the other hook.
2. In a toy of the type described, a frame. upper and lower shafts journaled therein, wheels fixed to said shafts, sprocket chains passing over said wheels, outwardly directed flight arms carried by the chains, spaced oppositely directed hooks carried by each flight arm adapted for the raising and lowering of sounding rollers, lriving means for one of said shafts, power transmitting means associated with the other shaft, and an arcuate trough carried by the lower end of the frame within the path of travel of the flight arms for receiving the sounding rollers from one hook and presenting them to be picked up by the other hook.

In a toy of the type described, a frame, upper and lower shafts journaled therein, wheels fixed to said shafts, sprocket chains passing over said wheels, outwardly directed flight arms carried by the chains, spaced oppositely directed hooks carried by each flight arm adapted for the raising and lowering of sounding rollers, said wheels being of polygonal formation with the flat faces thereof equal in length to each link of the sprocket chains, and an arcuate trough carried. by the lower end of the frame within the path of travel of the flight arms for receiving the sounding rollers froin one hoot: and presenting them to be picked up by the other hook.
4;. in a toy of the type described, a frame, upper and lower shafts journaled therein, wheels lined to said shafts, sprocket chains passing over said wheels, outwardly directed flight arms carried by the chains, spaced oppositely directed hooks carried by each flight arm adapted for the raising and lowering of sounding rollers, driving means for one of said shafts, power transmitting means associated with the other shaft, said wheels being of polygmial formation with the tint faces thereof equal in length to each link of the sprocket chains, and an art-irate trough carried by the lower end of the frame within the path of travel of the flight arms for receiving the sounding rollers from one hook and presenting them to be picked up by the other hook.
