ARTIFICIAL FOOT.
Application filed February 5, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED HABERMAnN, citizen of Germany, residing at Mumch, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Feet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of artificial limbs and refers more particularly to an artificial foot and its connection with the leg.
In describing my invention I refer to the drawing herewith in which the sole figure represents a vertical section through the lower portion of a leg with a foot attached thereto, the said foot comprising a separate fore-part A of the foot and a heel B. Both parts are connected with each other by a lever C passed through the ankle-portion at the bottom of the leg and rotatably supported in the same. One end C of the said lever is attached to the spring-actuated heel B while the other end C extends into the fore-part1 of the foot, beneath the instep. This end C has the shape of a spindle or shaft placed in the longitudinal axis of the foot, about which the said fore-part is rotatable in lateral direction. When during walking the heel B is set on the ground, it will by the movement of the spring F move rearwardly somewhat andin this way cause a steady step of the leg D, the forepart of the foot assuming the pointed posi tion, while during stepping the portion A moves on and relatively to the portion D.
The object of my new construction is to unite sure-footedness and stability with a soft, natural step and a neat appearance of the artificial foot. In addition, the lateral movement of the foot permits of its accommodation to the inequalities of the ground without impairing its sure-footedness.
To attain easy transition from the pointed to the heel-position of the foot I prefer to insert an india-rubber cushion E or a spring between leg and forefoot. Or instead thereoi or acting in connection therewith an india-rubber cushion G or another spring may be added above the upper abutment H of the spring F. Through the said india-rubber cushion G and the abutment Serial No. 442,876.
serves to permit adjustment of the parts after the joint has worn.
I claim 1. An artificial foot, comprising a heel portion, a fore-foot portion, and a twoarmed lever interconnecting said portions, said fore-foot portion being supported to rotate laterally on one arm of said lever.
2. An artificial foot, comprising a heel portion, a fore-foot portion, a leg portion, means for interconnecting said several portions, said forefoot portion being adapted I to rotate laterally about a part of said" means, and cushioning means interposed between the leg portion and the forefoot portion.
3. An artificial foot, comprising a leg portion, a heel portion, a fore-foot portion, a two-armed lever connecting the heel portion to the fore-foot portion, said fore-foot portion being adapted to rotate laterally on one arm of said lever, means connecting said lever to said leg portion, and flexible means interposed between the heel portion and the leg portion.
4:. An artificial foot, comprising a heel portion, a fore-foot portion, and a lever having one arm pivotally connected to the heel portion and its other arm elongated and extending loosely through the longitudinal axis of said fore-foot portion where by the latter is adapted to rotate laterally about said elongated arm.
5. An artificial foot, comprising a. leg portion having a cavity therein, a heel portion in line with said cavity, a fore-foot portion, a lever having one arm pivoted to the heel portion and its other arm extending into and supporting the fore-foot portion, means for connecting the lever to the leg portion, cushioning means interposed between the leg portion and the fore-foot portion, a rod having one end pivoted to the heel and its other-end extending into said cavity, and a spring encircling said rod.
