W. H. WN DT WINDER SHAFT Filed Dec. 28. :922

UHT"
WILLIAM H. WENDT, OF LITTLE FALLS, MINNESOTA.
WINDER SHAFT.
Application led December 28,1922. Serial No. 669,545.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. `WENDT, :i citizen of the United States, resident of Little Falls, county of Morrison. and State of Minnesota` have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVinder Shafts. of which the following is al specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a winder shaft supporting a core on which paper or other material is woundand having means foi-easily and quickly locking the core on the shaft or releasing it without the employment of set screws or any other device that might in any way tend to increase or cause liability of injury; Said locking means 4being removable at the ends of the shaft to allow the core with the paper of other material wound thereon to'be easily removed.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following detailed description. Y
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
'In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification. i
Figure 1 is a view artially in section of a winder shaft embo ying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; i
Figure 3 is a detailed sectional view showing the manner of mounting thelocking device on the shaft.; Y Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4--4 of Figure 3. l
In the drawing, 2 represents a Winder shaft having the squared ends 3 for the application of a tool to revolve the shaft and tighten the lock nuts as will hereinafter appear.
4 is a core loosely encircling the shaft and on which paper or'other material is wound. At each end of the core. ,a hub 5 is provided and asthese hubs and the mechanism connected therewith is the same at both ends of the shaft` l will describe one` indicating the other by the saine reference numerals with the addition of the exponent a.
A. hub 5 has an extension 6 thereon exieriorly threaded to receive a nut 7 that -is adapted to engage one end of the core 4, and when the other end is similarly engaged, and locked, the c ore will be secured against rotary movement.
An annular groove 8 is provided in each end of the shaft and radially arranged jaws 9-are mounted in a collar 10 and adapted to move toward and from the shaft, and said jaws at their inner ends have seats 11 for contact with the bottom of the groove 8, and a pin 12 is mounted in said shaft and projects into the groove 8 in position to engage the jaws and prevent rotary movement of the collar and hub except such slight movement as may be permitted bythe space between the pin and the inwardly projecting ends of the jaws. The outery portions of the jaws have curved recesses 13'therein to receive cams 14' projectnglfrom'a ring 15 that is seated in bearings 16.5fn the hub 5; said ring having holes 17 therein to receive a Spanne-r wrench-not shown-when it is desired to rotate the ring and move the locking jaws. Evidently rotary movement of the ring in one direction will project-Z the jaws inwardlv to contact with the shaft, i
and in this position, the jaws will be in the path of the pin 12 and will be locked against rotary movement Y independently of the shaft. i j
Movement of the ring in the opposite direction will withdraw the jaws from the annular groove in the shaft and release the hub and allow it and the nut thereon to be withdrawn from contact with the end of the core. As long as the jaws are in their projected position, relative rotaryv movement of the hub and the shaft will be prevented as well as longitudinal movement thereof, but as soon as the locking jaws are retractedya suitable tool may be applied to the nd of the shaft to revolve it and' release the core. and then the shaft may be moved longitudinally and withdrawn entirely from the core. In the same way, the nuts can be tightened against the ends of the core by revolving the shaft and rotating the hubs with it. This device provides a very substantial and convenient means for supporting a core for aroll of paper and permitting the rapid withdrawal of the sha-ft from the core when the roll has been completed. During the winding operation, the core will be securely clamped and held against independent rotary movement until the pressure on the ends is relieved.
I claim as my invention:
l. A device of the class described comprising a shaft, a core thereon, a hub loosely mounted on said shaft, an adjustable nut thereon having` an end friction surface for engaging and clamping a corresponding end surface of said core, a stop for the opposite end of said core, means for locking said hub against rotary and longitudinal movement on said shaft, said core being held by frictional engagement with said stop and nut.
2. A device of the class described comprising a shaft, a core thereon, a hub at one end of said core, a nut thereon for engaging said core, a stop against which the other end of said core is seated, a collar mounted on said hub, jaws mounted in said collar for engaging said hub, a ring loosely mounted on said hub and having cams thereon for engaging said ljaws to project and withdraw them when said ring is rotated.
3. A device of the class described comprising a shaft having an annular groove and a pin in the bottom of said groove, a hub loosely mounted "on said shaft, radially arranged jaws mounted in said hub and adapted to enter said groove, means for projecting and Withdrawin said jaws, said jaws With said pin, when 1n their projected posi- `tion engaging said pin and, locking said hub on said shaft'against rotary and longitudinal movement, a nut adjustably mounted on said hub, a core carried by said shaft and engaged at one end by said nut, and means at the other end of said core against which it is clamped by the movement of said nut.
4. A device of the class described comprising a shaft, a core loosely mounted thereon, adjustable means at each end of said core having friction surfaces for engaging and clamping corresponding surfaces of said core, supports for said adjustable means, and means for locking said supports on said shaft, rotation of said shaft advancing or retracting said locking means to lock or release said core.
5. A device of the class described comprising a shaft, a core loosely mounted thereon, hubs provided at each end of said core on said shaft and having adjustable nuts thereon provided with friction surfaces for engaging the ends of said core and clamping it against rotary movement, and means for locking said hubs against rotary and longitudinal movement, the revolution of said shaft when said hubs are locked thereon operating vto tighten said nuts against said core. j
in Witness whereof, I' have hereunto set my hand this 23rd day of December, 1922.
