PATENT" QFFIQE...
ALFRED J'OBLING, OF ILFORD, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE PARABOLA FURNACE BRIDGE COMPANY LIMITED; OF LONDON, ENG-LAND.
FURNACE FIRE BRIDGE.
Application filed April 4,-
To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED JoBLING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 25 Blenheim Avenue, Ilford, Essex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Furnace Fire Bridges, of which the following is a specification.
'This invention relates to furnace firebridges of the type inwhich locking means are'provided for the purpose of preventing accidental displacement of the auxiliary firebars and the invention has for its object improved means for retaining the auxiliary firebars, designed so as to combine with the firebridge proper in such a way as to permit of the employment of either firebricks or firebars without sacrificing the air spaces necessary to efiicient combustion and designed also so as to enable replacement of burnt out or otherwise damaged firebars to be effected with great facility and expedition.
According to the invention the firebridge comprises curved spacing and retaining members in the form of bars adapted to interlock with the back bearer and bridge plate and which are spaced at intervals between firebridge sections such as firebrick segments or curved firebars which are fitted tightly between each pair of said spacing and retaining members.
The spacing and retaining members are constructed with supplementary supporting members upon which are adapted to rest the margins of the aforesaid firebridge sections which may consist of saddle-shaped firebrick segments, individual segmental firebricks arranged in nests, groups of bars cast in the form of a saddle-shaped grid, or individual horizontally disposed cast-iron firebars.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of one form of the firebridge with some of the firebridge sections omitted, and Figure 2 is a rear View of a firebridge according to the invention.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3-8 Figure 1 showing firebridge sect-ion, the retaining and spacing bar being omitted.
Fig. a is a section on line H showing the spacing and retaining bar in position.
a is the back bearer which at its front 1921. Serial No; 458,474,
side supports the rear ends of the main firebars (not shown) and, prevents the slice when in use from dislodging the firebridge sections, said back bearer is formed with an upstanding lip Z).
c is the bridge plate which is supported by the back bearer a at or along the rear side of same. I
d are the spacing and retaining bars which are curved in profile and of which the-heels rest in slots 6 formed at intervals along the front upper side of the back bearer a and Whereoffthe forward ends fit into corresponding slots 7 formed in the upper edge ofthe bridge-plate 0.
The fire bars may be cast in one, in the form of, a saddle-shaped grid as shown'in Figure 1, said grid having units vertically disposed as in the case of the grid 7), in which case said gridis formed with air outlet apertures m along its upperunderside and is cast in a form following the con tour of the spacing and retaining bars d which may be formed with the heads d and locking fingers d (see Fig. 2). The device is also provided with air passages or channels as shown at it.
It will thus be seen that while the firebridge sections or auxiliary firebars are firmly retained in position against displacement the operation of replacing a burnt out or broken brick, block or bar, is considerably simplified and facilitated, while if an emergency repair is necessary the construction and arrangement of the parts are such that it can be effected with ordinary firebricks and fireclay without impairing the combustion by sacrificing the air spaces, an advantage which is unobtainable in other firebridges within my knowledge. Moreover the special contour imparted to the firebridge of this invention prevents the accumulation of clinker on and consequent stoppage of the air spaces in the bridge.
What I claim is 2- 1. A furnace firebridge comprising, a back bearer, a bridge plate, curved spacing and retaining bars adapted to interlock with said back bearer and said bridge plate, said curved spacing and retaining bars being spaced at intervals along and interlocking with said firebridge, and firebridge sections located between and locked in position by said spacing and retaining bars.
2. A furnace firebridge comprising a back respondingly recessed at intervals, spacing and retaining bars fitted into said recesses in and adapted to interlock with said back bearer and said bridge plate, and firebridge sections located between and locked in position by said spacing and retaining bars.
a. A furnace firebridge comprising, a back bearer, a bridge plate connected thereto, said back bearer and bridge plate being correspondingly recessed at intervals along their respective upper sides, curved spacing and retaining bars fitting in said recesses and adapted to interlock with said back bearer and said bridge plate, curved firebridge sections located tightly between said curved spacing and retaining bars, and projections formed on said spacing and retaining bars to lock the firebridge sect-ions in position.
5. A furnace firebridge comprising, a back bearer, a bridge plate connected thereto, said back bearer and said bridge plate being correspondingly recessed at intervals, bowed out spacing and retaining bars fitted into said recesses in said back bearer and said bridge plate and adapted to take over said bridge plate and to interlock therewith and with said back bearer, and bowed out auxiliary firebars located between said curved spacing and retaining bars.
6. A furnace firebridge comprising, a back bearer, a bridge plate connected thereto, said back bearer and bridge plate being correspondingly recessed at intervals along their respective upper sides, curved spacing and retaining bars fitting in said recesses and adapted to interlock with said back bearer and said bridge plate, curved firebridge sections located tightly between said curved spacing and retaining bars, projections formed on said spacing and retaining bars to lock the firebridge sections in position, and said firebridge plates having a hollow space in the rear thereof between said firebridge plate and bridge plate.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED JOBLING.
