To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAv SCHWOR- ETZKY, a citizen of German residing at 12 Turmstrz, Esslingen a. N., ermany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Fire Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a portable fireextinguisher of that class in which water is discharged from a receptacle by a fixed nozzle under gas pressure in an upward or downward direction. Forxcontrolling the circulation of the liquid between the branch pipes leading to both ends of the receptacle or container and the outlet pipe ball valves are provided in a chamber located between the pipes.
In known constructions of this class two valve balls have been positively connected by a rod. Such a construction shows the disadvantage, that when inclining the extinguisher in the one or other direction the ball which for the time being rests upon its seat is not inclined to leave it easily, which trouble is still further increased, inasmuch as the sliding friction of the rod connecting the two balls in its bearings must also be overcome. Experience has shown that for this reason extinguishers of this type fail to act when their position approaches the horizontal and allow the gas to escape unutilized.
The essential novel feature of this invention is that the seats of two freely movable ball valves are disposed so close to each other that both balls can never simultaneously reach their seats, but only one at a time. This ball resting upon its seat is then when the position of the extinguisher is changed or reversed quickly and surely forced off its seating by the direct impact of the second ball, so that a faultless working of the gas syringe in any direction is ensured. In order to prevent the ball resting upon its seat being lifted off its seat by the liquid flowing quickly past it; this ball may be weighted by a second ball located just behind it. In the accompanying drawings two constructions of the improved extinguisher are illustrated by way of example.

Referring to the drawing, in Fig. l a is the body of a fire extinguisher vhaving a nozzle 6 and being provided at its bottom in a well known manner with a filling opening that maybe closed bymeans of a screw plug 0. Into said opening fits a sleeve 03 having passages e and receiving a receptacle fflcontaining any means for setting up gas pressure in the container (1, for example an acid capable of reacting with the liquid contents of the fire extinguisher. The said receptacle may be opened or broken by means of a striking pin 2 arranged and constructed in a well known manner. A short tubular casing h. communicates with the delivery pipe 3, opening out into the nozzle 5. Within said casing two ball valve casings g, g are fixed with their seats so close together that the ball valves la, 70' can never rest upon their seats simultaneously.
The valve casings have at 0 and 0 openings and are with the tubular casing h fitted into the valve chest a carrying the two supply pipes r and 1". 70 70 are the two balls serving as weights for the balls 70 and lo.
With the modification shown in Fig. 4 the ball valve casings g, g are connected directly to the supply pipes r and r. The casing n is compensated by a tube p, from which the delivering pipe 5 branches off and which surrounds the ball valve casings. The lift of the balls is, is being limited by stops 7 and f. The liquid arriving by the tubes 7-, 1" respectively enters the tubular casing it, leaves it through opening 25, enters the chamber formed by the tube p and flows into the delivering pipe 8.
It will be readily understood that I do not confine myself to the exact details of the constructions shown, as these may obviously be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a fire extinguisher of the class described two freely movable ball valves for controlling the delivering nozzle, the seats of which are arranged so close together and the diameters of which being of such size that both balls can never simultaneously rest upon their seats, but only one at a time.
2. In a fire extinguisher of the class described, the combination o1 a receptacle for the liquid, means for setting up gas pressure in said receptacle, a nozzle for delivering the water from said receptacle, a delivering pipe leading to said nozzle, a valve chest disposed at about the middle of the length of said receptacle and in communication With said delivering pipe, two supply pipes one leading to each end of said receptacle arranged upon said valve chest, two valve boxes in said valve chest containing one freely movable ball valve each, the seats of which valves are so close together and the diameters of which balls being of such size that only one ball can rest upon its seat at a time. a
3. In a fire extinguisher of the class described the combination of a receptacle for the liquid, means for setting up gas pressure in said receptacle, a nozzle for delivering the liquid from said receptacle, a delivering pipe leading to said nozzle, a chamber in communication with said delivering pipe, two supply pipes one leading to each end. of said receptacle, two ball alve casings containing one freely movable ball valve each, the seats of which valves are so close together and the diameters of which valves being of such size that only one ball can rest upon its seat at a time, said ball valve casings being directly connected to said supply pipes leading to the ends of said receptacle and one with the other by a tube communicating with the said chamber connected to the delivering pipe.
