Be it known that I, ASHLEY (i. OGDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Printing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to photographic devices and is hereinafter described as being adapted to be applied to machines of the general type shown in the patent to Ogden, Reissue o. 14,517, dated September 3, 1918, for photographically producing lithographie plates.

In such and other machines it is found desirable to have a shield corresponding to the ordinary plate-holder shields of photographic cameras to enable the sensitized 29 surface to be carried around in its plateholder without exposureto light. In many cases, however, such a shield must be relatively ,large and diflicult to handle if it is to expose the whole plate or surface when Withdrawn; and if made of many substances otherwise suitable, -such as hard rubber, is brittle or likely to warp. ,A

According to the present invention the shield may take the form of a flexible sheet which is adapted to run in suitable guides of the plateholder.aud which may be withdrawn from the surface of the plate-holder into a shield-holder which may be temporarily held to or attached to the plate-holder.

The shield-holder when detached from the plate-holder forms a convenient device for supporting the shield and for carrying it around, so that it will not be easily damaged. The shield has been found to be very satisfactory if made of an opaque fabric stitfened by suitable battens.

Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

These springs are permanently attached to the mount 7 and are supported by the back 4 upon which they so rest as to' permit a relative slight movement of the mount when pressure is applied thereto in the carrying out of a printing operation as' described in said Reissue Patent No. 14,517.

The mount carries a sensitized plate 7 which is cushioned with respect to the mount 7 by. means of an interposed blanket 8 of yieldable material which may overlie the ledges 6 as shown at 6 for the purpose of excluding light which may otherwise-enter between thevmount 7 and adjacent portions of the back 4 through the opening 5.

For shielding the under face or sensitized surface of the plate 7 from the light there is provided a flexible shield 9 herein shown as comprising a piece of opaque cloth 10, preferably black, with closely set transverse stiffening battens 11 extending across it so that the ends of the hattens and the cloth extend into rabbeted guides 12 in the back 4 and may slide therein. The guides 12 are curved upwardly at a point an appreciable distancefrom the plate 7 as shown at 13. The bend or curve 13 is sharp enough to shut out light which might otherwise enter, when the shield, whichis of such a length that it always projects through said bend, is withdrawn from the plate-holder 1. When it is desired to remove the shield from the plate-holder, a supporting frame 14 comprising sides 15an` upper end 16 and a lower end 17, is held adjacent the bend 13 by means of pins, one of which is shown at 18, which project fr om a stiffening member 14 secured to the end 17, the pins 18 being adapted to enter holes, one of which is indicated b the numeral 19, formed in the back 4. When the shield 9 has been Wholly Withdrawn from the plate-holder 1 the supporting frame, above described, may be lifted and carried away,carr ying with it the shield 9 now wholly supporte therein, thus clearing the end or-sensitiz faces of the plate 7 of any obstruction Which would interfere with the operation of machines ofthe class with which my invention is particularly adapted to be used.

When it is desired to replace the shield in the plate-holderthe supporting frame 14 is brought into the position shown in Figure 2 with the pins 18 resting in the holes 19 and then the shield is slid into position by pushing downward upon its upper end so that it slides through the guides 21, the curve 13 and into the side guides 12 covering the plate with the result that the plate-holder can be now removed without any danger of what is commonly known as fogging the plate.

' Having thus described one embodiment of my invention, what I claim is:

- 1. In a photographic device, the combination with a plate-holder provided with guides, and a shield stifl'rened to enable it to be slid into said guides in the plateholder, and a removable supporting frame adapted to it upon the plate-holder to receive the shield therefrom and having guides into which the shield slides.

2. The combination with a plate-holder provided with guides having curved ends, of a shield stiff enough to be thrust into said guides in the plate-holder, and'yieldable to bend around curved ends of the guides, a shield-receiving frame having guides adapted to register with the curvedends of the plate-holder guides, so that the shield may be slid from the plate-holder into the receiving frame, and guide members adapted to hold the shield-receiving member in position upon the plate-holder to 3. In a photographic device a plateholder provided with a guide, said guide bein curved at one end thereof through said` hoder sharp enough to exclude light, a ilexible shield ,in thedform of a fabric element having battens set closely together across said element to stifen the'same, said shield being adapted to be inserted into said guides and withdrawn therefrom through the curved end thereof, anda shield receiving device adapted to vbe positioned at the curved end of said guide to receive said shield andsupport the same as it is withdrawn from said guide.
