Beit known that I, CHARLES HARVEY Fnnnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in- Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my said invention is the provision of a cuspidor top attached to supply with disinfectant a cuspidor to which the top is applied.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cuspidor embodying the said top and other features calculated to con tribute to the sanitary character of the cuspidor.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists 'in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, formin part of this specification v i *igure 1 is a diametrical section illustrative of my no-velcuspidor top.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the said top.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showing a cuspidor embodying the said top and other features calculated to contribute to the maintenance of the cuspidor in a sanitary state.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical diametrical section of the globular disinfectant receptacle or ball constituting an important feature of my invention.
Figure 5 is an enlarged Vertical section of a conical disinfectant receptacle designed to be used in the discretion of the manufacturer in lieu of the globular receptacle shown in Figures 1 to 4;. v

My novel cuspidortop is numbered 1, and I would have it understood that it is within the purview of my invention to apply the said top 2 and use the same in conjunction with an ordinary plain receptacle as well as in conjunction with the specific receptacle or hopper shown in Figure 3. Among other features the novel top 1 comprises a hollow annular portion 2 from which depend inner and outer spaced annuli 3, designed and adapted to rest at op-- posite sides of the rim ofa receptacle (not shown), with a view to maintaining the top 1923. The said top 1 also comprises an inwardly and downvardly inclined interior annulus 4, the cen tral opening of which is designated by 5, and is designed for the downward passage of expectorations, cigar butts, tobacco quids and the like. The cover or top further comprises a hollow globular receptacle 6, preferably of metal or glass, and the upper portion of which rests in the center of the opening 5. As best shown in Figure 4, the said globular receptacle or ball 6 is provided in diametrically opposite sides with shallow indentures 9 for the engagement of the inner blunt ends 10 of resilient sup porting arms 11, Figure 1. The said supporting arms 11 are connected to and carried by the annulus 4, and while they serve to safely support the ball or receptacle 6 it will be manifest that when desired the ball or receptacle can when subjected to a little stress be quickly and easily disengaged from the arms 11. When the ball 6 is thus removed it can be conveniently supplied with disinfectant and can then be expeditiously and easily replaced in engagement with the arms 11. In the bottom of the hollow ball or receptacle 6 is provided an interiorly threaded socket to receive a plug 8, said plug 8 being threaded and being provided with a drip conduit 8 and with an upwardly eXten-ding conduit 8 the lower end of which is arranged flush with the lower end of the plug 8. At 8 is a dropper having a threaded shank 8 socketed in the plug 6 whereby the dropper can be adjusted to regulate the flow of disinfectant through the conduit 8 The conduit 8 provides for the entry of air into the receptacle 6 to displace the fluid disinfectant. Manifestly when the receptacle 6 is disengaged from the arms 11 and removed, the plug 8 can be readilyremovcd from the socket 7 to permit of the placing of disinfectant in, the ball or receptacle 6 after which the said ball or receptacle 6 can be readily replaced in engagement with the arms 11 for use.
In virtue of the globular form of the receptacle 6, it will be noted that cigar butts and the like will not lodge on the receptacle 6 when deposited in the cuspidor. On the other hand cigar butts and other substance placed in the 'cuspidor will'be deflected by the receptacle 6 and caused to drop from the top or cover 1.
In Figure 8, I show a top or cover 1 substantially similar to the top 1 shown in Figures 1 and 2. In the construction of Figure 3, however, the hollow annulus 2 of the top is provided with only one pendent annular flange 3 this flange 3 being connected to an annular support 12 which, in turn, is connected at 13 to a floor 1 1. It will also be noticed in the embodiment shown in Figure 3, that the hollow annulus 2- of the top is connected with a pipe 15, valved at 16 and designed to conduct water from an appropriate source of supply 17, said pipe 15 is in communication through the annulus 2 with one or more eduction orifices 2 of the annulus 2 so disposed as to cause water to pass around the upper portion of the inclined annulus 4 comprised in the modified construction. The disinfectant receptacle 6 and the arms 11 of the modified construction are similar to the corresponding elements in Figures 1 and 2.
In addition to the elements named the modified construction comprises a receptacle or bowl 20, and an outlet conduit 21, the said conduit 21 being shaped as illustrated to form a water seal, designed to preclude the possibility of sewer gas escaping upwardly through the cuspidor.
In the practical use of the embodiment of my invention shown in Figure 3, the valve 16 is opened at intervals to flush the cuspidor in the same manner that a water closet bowl is flushed, and it will be noted that after each flushing the lower portion of the bowl or receptacle 20 will be occupied by water into which will be dropped from the receptacle 6 an appropriate disinfectant so that at all times the cuspidor will be maintained in a sanitary state, and germination in the receptacle or bowl 20 will be effectively prevented.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that notwithstanding its features of prac tical advantages as set forth in the foregoing, my novel cuspidor top and cuspidor are simple and. inexpensive in construction and are well adapted to withstand the usage to which cuspidor-s and analogous devices are ordinarily subjected.
InFigure 5 of the drawings, I illustrate a receptacle 6 which is similar in all respects to the globular receptacle 6 except that its upper portion is of cone shape. Manifestly it is within the purview of my invention to employ either a globular receptacle or a conical receptacle without involving departure from the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiments of my inven tion in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiments. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. A cuspidor top having an inwardly and downwardly inclined annulus, a hollow disinfectant receptacle arranged in the opening of the said annulus and having eduction means and also having indentures in its side, and resilient supporting arms connected to the said annulus and provided with blunt terminals disposed in said indentures and removably supporting the receptacle.
2. A cuspidor top having an inwardly and downwardly inclined annulus, a globular disinfectant receptacle arranged in the opening of the said annulus and having eduction means and also having indentures in its side, and resilient supporting arms connected to the said annulus and provided with blunt terminals disposed in said indentures and removably supporting the re ceptacle; said top also having a hollow annulus in fixed relation to the outer portion of the inclined annulus, and a flange pendent from the said hollow annulus.
3. A cuspidor comprising an appropriately supported bowl, a conduit connected to the bowl and shaped to form a water seal and adapted to lead to a point of discharge, a top arranged on the said bowl and having a downwardly and inwardly inclined annulus, a disinfectant containing receptacle of globular form supported in the opening of the inclined annulus and having eduction means for disinfectant, and a valved pipe leading from a source of water supply and arranged to supply water to the inclined annulus.
4. A hollow receptacle for disinfectant comprising a body portion. an interiorly threaded socket in the wall of said body portion, a plug threaded in said socket and removable therefrom for the filling of the receptacle and having a discharge conduit and also having a conduit for supplying air to the interior of the receptacle, the latter conduit extending from the nlug upwardly within the receptacle, and a dropper opposed to the lower end of the plug and having an adjustable connection with the plug.
