The means for insuringl proper alinement of the lifts comprises a vertically movable arm i8 carrying a plurality of bent resilient lingers 20, the pointed ends of which are adapted to engage the rear rounded edges of the lifts. The arm 18 is provided with a. handle 22 and is pivoted at 2li between ears 2G of a member 2'? rising` from the bed plate. The lingers 20, of which there is one for each lift in the heel that is to be operated upon. are arranged in a row with their upper enc s clamped between a pair of plates by means of bolts 30 which serve also to secure the clamping plates 2S to the arm i8. The fingers are adjusted to engage their respective lifts when the arm 18 is in operative position as indicated in Fig. fl, and they are spaced apart so as to be free to yield laterally independently of each other in order that they may participate in. the rotating movement of any angularly displaced lifts and oder no resistance thereto. Each finger 20 is bent or bowed Ylaterally in the plane of the lift which it is arranged to engage, as illustrated clearly in 3. in order that it may yield vertically when put under pressure, thereby insuring a substantially even application of pressure to each lift.
Normally the arm i8 occupies an inoper: tive position against a stop 3Q forming a part of the member Qi', as indicated in ll E2. but it is adapted to be swung downwardly by means of the handle into the position shown in llig. 4, so as to bring the lower pointed ends of the lingers 2O into engagement with the rear edges of the lifts, and to press the lifts downwardly between the beveled edge guides until their breast edges rest, squarely upon the bed plate. As pressure applied to the arm 18, the ability of the liuge"s 2O to yield in the direction of their movement will insure that each of the component lifts of the heel will be indepei'u'leully en ;,aged and pressed toward th` bed plate. 'lhe lingers 20, by reason of their .ility lo yield laterally, in the planes of the lifts. will also cause such lifts as may he angularly disposed in the heel pile to :lfeverallj: rotated about one corner until the breast edges thereoll are properly alined against 1the bed plate. ln this way all of lhe lifts are acted upon in a manner to inlnoper alinement. The pointed @nos of the lingers preventJ them from slipping sidewise from the rounded edges of the lifgs as the lifts are being brought into ahnement. rllhe pointed lift engaging ends of the lingers normally lie in the central `vertical longitiulinal plane of the heel form, but during the process of aligning the lifts.v
the lingers are permitted to yield laterallv as required by the change of` angular posi tion of the lifts. i
The manner in which an angularly disposed lift is rotated about one of. its corners in mder to bring its breast edge squarely n ainst the bed plate is illustrated by Fig. 5.
e full lines in this ligure indicate an aligning linger as it appears while engaging an angular-ly disposed lift, before it has imparted any rotating movement thereto. The dotted lines represent the positions of the lif and the linger after the lift has been rotated into position. It will be apparent that there will be no frictional rubbing of vthe aligning linger over the rear edge of who lift engm'ed thereby, while the lift 1s beine' rolalet, as would be the case if the ig member were movable only in a single plz-uic. Consequently instead of offering am.' resi innee to the angular movement he libs. the resilient lingers participate in said movement and a positive and perfect alinement is assured.
lfhen the lifts have all been brought into proper aline-ment, pressure is applied to the D through the rod l0 by any suitable bloei: o means7 not shown in the drawing', so as to hold the lifts .firmly while they are being permanenti secured together by the driviro of a na .l through the pile from the top lilA to the base lift. As shown in Fig. f2, the plate G ca es a nail throat 34, which is mounted in the member 27 between the ars 26 and parallel to the bed plate, through which nails may be driven into the heel pile by a nail driver 36 which may be operated by.' any usual or suitable means.
llvlhile the drawings illustrate the invention as embodied in a device adapted to re eeive a stach of lifts in upright position upon a horizontal support, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to :h an arrangement, as it may equally well :e embodied in a device adapted to receive f i rate upon the lifts while they are in :contal or any other position. The s of construction may also be variously modilied without departing from the spirit ol' llw imeution as defined in the following claims.
llfaving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. 5r 1ieel lift aligning device having, in combination. a form adapted to receive a loosely assembled heel, and mea-ns capable of lateral movement for acting independently upon each of the component lifts of the heel to elfen-t their alinement.
