Be it known that we, CHARLEs S. PROUD- roo'r, a resident of the borough of Westmont, in the county of vCambrla and State of Pennsylvania, and Dam L.. EYNON, a resident 0f St. Davids, Radnor Township, in the county of Delaware and Statef of Pennsylvania, both citizens vof the United States, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Side Frames for Car Trucks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others sln'lled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates generally to. an inte lly constructed side frame for Acar lsawhich is preferably formed of one plate of metal, such as steel or iron, which plate is iirs't cut and punched to the shape desired for the various members, then bent on its median line to form a hollow structure, with side portions spaced apart and provided with inwardly projecting flanges in some parts, and some of the members are also provided with integral tongues and the companion flanges forming parts of th other sides of said members are provided with outwardly projecting integral portions having grooves therein, which ton es are positioned in said grooves andhelurmly therein by close contact in such-a way as to secure said members together. These Vtongues and lgrooves may extend the full lengths of the members; or preferably may only be formed on portions thereof, as may be desirable. j
The pedestal tie bar portgms of our side frame are also formed integrally and the inner portions 'thereof are preferably of channel section with outwardly projecting flanges secured together by means of to es and grooves as above mentioned, w e the end portions are flat and cut into shape in such a way that one is superimposed on the other, one of the flat portions extending from one side and the other from the other side and each provided with registerin journal box bolt holes, the inner channe -shaped portions of said pedestal tie bars be' secured together by tongues and grooves similar to those above mentioned.
One of the particular features of our invention resides in the manner of connecting the two side portions by means of the integrally formed tongues and grooves.
Some of these tongues may be formed on :one portion and some on the other, and the portions which form the grooves may also be formed partially on oneof the sides and others on the other side to thereby hold the two sides together.

Referring now to the characters'of reference on the drawingsz-l is the upper portion vof the top. arch bar of our side frame; 2 are the side portions formed integral therewith and extending therefrom in substantial parallelism and spaced apart;

to be guided by the bolster guides 8, which are shown asplates welded to the upper portions of' the flanges 7 of -the column guides in the upper part of the bolster opening; 9 are the upper flanges of the central portion of the bottom arch bar,- which are inturned as shown with their edges spaced apart; 10 are the. bottom inturnedlyflanges of the end portion of' the frame, v the edges offwhich are contiguous and may be welded together and are adaptedY to be seated upon the journalY boxes; 11 are the inturned flanges Yprojecting inwardlyY from the lower sides of the diagonal tension members, one of which is provided with the integral tongue portion 12 and the other with the groove portion 13, which are adapted to be secured together thereby as ,illustrated particularly in Figure 5; 14 are the lower inturned flanges of the bottom arch bar, one of which is provided with an integral tongue portion 15 and the other with an integrally formed groove portion 16 adapted to secure the two parts together, as particularly illustrated in Figure 4; 17 are the end portions of the pedestal tie bars, which are formed rights and lefts, as illustrated in Figures 8 and 9, provided with registering journal box bolt holes 18, while one of these has a tongue portion 15 which is adapted to be seated in the grooved portion of the integral yextension 16 of the other part. The tongue and groove connections of the two sides of the bottom arch bar and the inner portions of the 'pedestal tie bars are all numbered 15 and 16, respectively, as these parts form one substan` tially continuous portion of our frame. 20 are the reinforcing plates inserted within f the end extension of the frame, provided with upturned lip portions adapted to serve as nut locks for the journal box bolts, and
these are secured or welded to the interior of the frame as indicated at 21, and 19 are journal box bolt holes in the upper end portion.
As illustrated in Figure 7, 22 is the sprin plank shown in dotted lines, which may e of channel shape, secured to the frame in any manner desired and adapted to tie the two frames of each side of the truck together and to support the custornary springs, etc.

Having thus described our invention, what weeclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A side frame formed integral from one plate, certain members of which are secured together Vby tongue and groove connections.
o 2. A truck frame composed of one metal pla-te, having a. top portion, two side p0rtions extending therefrom and apart, some of the members having inwardly extending flanges provided with tongue and groove connections, whereby they are secured together. v

A truck frame composed of one metal plate, including a top portion, a bottom portion, side portions composed of members connecting the same, said side portions being spaced apart and some of them being provided with inturned flanges, some of said flanges having grooved portions and others tongue portions located therein, whereby the parts are firmly secured together. o
5. An integral frame for car trucks, composed of a single plate of metal forming the various members thereof, having a top member, side members extending from the upper member in substantial parallelism and spaced apart, a bottom member, inwardly extending flanges on certain of said spaced los y members co-operating with each other, one of the same having a grooved portion and the other a tongue a apted to interlock and thereby secure the p-arts together.

A side frame for car trucks of the integral arch bar` type, comprising a single plate of metal bent about its intermediate portion, forming a top arch bar, a bottom arch bar, inclined tension members, column guides, and pedestal tie bars, certain of said members having einturned flanges adapted to contact with each other, one of each of said flanges being provided with an integral tongue portion and its com anion having an internal grooved portion adapted to interlock, whereby the .parts are firmly secured together.
7. A side frame for car trucks, comprising a single plate of metal bent about its intermediate portion, forming a top member, a bottom member, and side members, the sides of which are spaced apart, some of them having inturned anges, portions of said anges being provided with integral f tongues, and integral grooves in the adjacent portions, adapted to interlock and "secure them together.
8. A truck frame com osed of one metal plate, having a top portion, a bottom portion, and two side portions extending there; from connecting them and spaced apart, some of the members forming said side portions being provided with tongue portions and others with grooved portions, all
formed integral therewith and extendingV throughout parts of their lengths, whereby they are firmly secured together without welding or riveting.
9. A side frame for'car trucks, composed of a single plate, cut in the shape desired to form the various members, including a top arch bar, a bottom arch bar, inclined side tension members, column guides, and pedestal tie bars, the side portions of which connecting the arch bars are spaced apart and provided with inturned flanges, some of which are opposite and spaced apart, and some with abutting 'anges provided with tongue and groove portions, whereby they are secured togethe 10. 12. A side frame for a car truck, composed of .various members, portions of some of. which are provided with outstanding flanges secured together by integral tongue and groove connections.
