Be it known that I, MICHAEL FAnoNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vatertown, in the .countyof Jefferson and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scratchers, of which the following is a specification.

It is the purpose of this invention to provide a match scratcher embodying means for holding the scratcher on one spoke of the steering wheel of a motor operated vehicle, in which position, the device can be conveniently used by the driver.

-More specifically stated, the invention embodies an open frame like structure formed from a single piece of metal and designed to receive and support a strip of abrasive material, the frame further including a resilient clamping element arranged transversely of the frame to engage the spoke of the steering wheel and hold the device positioned longitudinally thereon, in which position, the spoke serves as a support for the device throughout its entire length.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing,

combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the steering wheel showing the position in which the match scratoher is arranged upon the steering wheel.

Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1. I

Figure 3' is a bottom plan view of the match scratcher showing one of the retaining tongues extended to permit the abrasive strip to be associated with the frame.

Figure 4 is a View looking from the opposite side of the device from that shown in Figure 3. Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring to the drawing in detail, indicates a strip of abrasive material which is adapted to be received and supported by an open frame like member including parallel sides and ends 11 and 12 respectively.

Thesides 11 are of channel like formation in cross section, this construction being provided by bending the material forming. the sides rearwardly upon said sides, and it will be noted upon inspection of Figure 3, that these bent portions 13 of the sides terminate short of the ends 12 to facilitate the insertion or removal of the abrasive material at any time it is found desirable. The abrasive material is adapted to be slid in the channel like sides from one end of the frame, and subsequently ment by bendable ears 14. These ears form an integral part of the frame structure and carried by the ends 12, To hold the abrasive strip in place, these ears bend toward each other upon one side of the strip 10, but when it is desired to remove the strip 10 from the frame or insert a new strip therein, it is then only necessary to extend one of the tongues 1 k to the position shown by dotted lines in Figure 3 and slightly loosen the other tongue.

As above stated, the invention is in the nature of an article of manufacture, primarily intended to be used on a steering wheel of a motor operated vehicle, and for this purpose I provide the frame like member with-a resilient element which is arranged transversely of the device and forming an integral part of the frame. This clamping element is indicated at 15, and projects from one of the sides 11 with its free end overlying, but spaced from the other side member. This construction allows the match scratcher in its entirety to beconveniently slipped on one spoke of the steering wheel as shown in Figure 1, or removed therefrom. It will be noted that by reason of the particular arrangement of the clamping element 15, when the scratcher is associated with the spoke of the steerin wheel, it is arrangedlongitudinally thereof, so that the spoke forms a backing for the abrasive strip 10, preventing the strip from yielding or being punctured or otherwise injured incident to its use. The device is very simple in construction, and can be manufactured and sold at a very nominal cost.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire tohave it understood that I do, not limit myself to what is herein shown and describedand that such changes maybe reheld against endwise move-' sorted to \vhendesired as fall within the scope of What .is claimed.

Having thus described the invention, I claim:

A match scratcher adapted to be associated with one spoke of the steering Wheel of the vehicle, said scratcher including \a strip of abrasive material, an open frame like structure including parallel sides and ends, said sides being of channel like formation in cross section to slidably receive said strip of abrasive material, bendable lugs carried by the end members of the frame and adapted to be bent over against one side of said strip to hold the latter immovably associated with the frame, and a r s ient c mp ng l m n m ng an tegral extension of the inwardly extending portion of one side member and arranged transversely of the frame, whereby the scratching device can be slipped upon said spokewi-th the spoke forming a backing for the said strip of abrasive material throughout the entire length thereof.
