Application filed August 25, 1921. Serial No. 95,149.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PASQUALE AnDREANo,
a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Cutters for Loom Shuttles; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enableothers skilled in the I art to which it appertai'ns to make and use the same. 7
The object of the invention is to provide a relatively simple and effective means applicable to a loom shuttle whereby in the event of an obstruction to the free feeding of the thread or yarn from the shuttle eye, such as the presentation of a knot in the same, causing a tension on the weft or filler thread or yarn and a consequent straining of the warp threads tending to cause a breakag of the latter, the weft or filler thread will be severed to, avoid the breakage of the warp thread or threads which latter contingency involves a considerable delay in the operation of the machine necessitated by the replacement and connection of the broken warp threads; and more especially to provide a movable knife arranged adjacent to the path of movement of the weft thread through the shuttle and adjacent to the guide rings carried thereby, whereby the tensioning of the weft thread by'reason of an obstruction such as indicated will cause the disposition of the knife in an operative relation to the thread tosever the same and thereby immediately relieve the Warp threads of all strain; and furthermore to provide a device for the purpose described, which can be applied to a shuttle of any of the ordinary types now in common use; and with these objects in view, the invention consists in a construction, combination and relation of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:

The device consists essentially of a tubufitted in a transverse'bore 11 of theshuttle body 12 having an attaching plate 13 which may be secured to the shuttle body by a screw 14: or equivalent means, said body portion or carrier serving to support a piv-' otal knife holder 15 of which the pivot is indicated at 1'6, and which is adapted to carry a knife blade 17. The knife blade is preferably detachably secured to the holder so as to be replaceable when worn, broken or otherwise inoperative or for the purpose ofsharpening the same, a set screw 18 beingemployed to secure the same in position between the parallel jaws of the holder, and a coiled spring 19 is arranged in the barrelor tubular carrier portion 10 to serve as a means of yieldingly holding the blade or knife holder in the inoperative or folded position indicated in full lines in Figure'3, while permitting of the pivotal movement of the knife to the operative position indicated in dotted lines in said figure due to strain applied to the weft thread as by the engagement of a knot 20 with one of the rings 21 which are common to many types of shut- 'tles.
In the ordinary running operation of the shuttle the knife maintains a position in substantial parallelism with the run of the thread as indicated in Figure 8, the same passing as in the ordinary practice from the bobbin 22 through the shuttle eye 23 which is located in the side groove or channel 24, also common to commercial shuttles. The knife does not assume an operative or thread cutting position until a strain is applied thereto as by the presentation of a knot or other obstruction or the failure of the thread to run freely from the bobbin which may of course be incidental to an irregular winding thereof, but'such strain when applied and before it becomes sufficiently severe to involve the breakage of a warp thread causes the movement of the knife to its lateral or operative position to sever the thread and thus enable the obstruction to be removed without involving the breakage of the warp threads.
Bar 22 takes up slack in the thread by moving portions thereof out of the direct path of movement of the threads.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is z- 1. A shuttle having a device normally tensioning the thread and provided with thread guide rings, guide pins engageable by the lar body portion or carrier 10 adapted to be t thread, and a thread cutting means having a blade arranged with its cutting edge inter mediate the pins and in the path of the thread when substantially taut from one guide pin to another.
2. A shuttle having a yielding device normally tensioning the thread and provided with guide rings, guide pins around which the thread extends in alternation with the rings of the device, and a thread cutting blade arranged with the cutting edge in the path of swinging movement of the thread carried by the tensioning device.
3. A thread cutting attachment for loom shuttles having a cutter movable into and out of a position in intersecting relation with the direct path of movement of the thread, in combination with means to normally take up slack in the thread and prevent engagement of the thread with the cutter, and said means being operable to permit engagement of the thread with the cutter through tensioning of the thread a degree overcoming the tension of the last mentioned means.
4:. In combination with a shuttle having means toguide and to take up slack in the thread, a cutter for engagement by the thread when tensioned a degree overcoming the tension of said means, a carrier for the cutter attachable to the shuttle, and said cutter being movable relatively to said carrier to facilitate attachment of the thread With the said means.
5. A shuttle having a plurality of thread guide means in spaced relation, a thread cutting blade arranged with its cutting edge intermediate said means and in the path of the thread-when the latter is substantially taut from one of said guide means to the other of said guide means, and yieldable thread guide means normally maintaining the thread out of contact with the cutting edge of the blade.
