Be it known that I, GEORGE SABIK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating Ma chines, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relatesto a duplicating 0r 7 copying machine by which a number of copies of a written or typewritten sheet can be made through the agency of an impression sheet on which the original writing is recorded and from which the copies are 16 made.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved machine having improved means for winding and moving the impression sheet. Another object is to provide an improved frame for supporting a sheet and the mechanism by which-the sheet is operated. Still another object is to provide improved means for mounting the rollers on which the impression sheet is wound.

Each of the rollers 21 and 22 is provided atone end with a trunnion 30 having an enlarged portion 3O secured in the end of the roller and a smaller portion 30- adapted to engage a slot 31 in one of the side frame members 10. The end of the handle portion of the latch member is bent around the side frame in order to prevent inward displacement thereof. The downward movement of each latch is limited by an inwardly turned lug 38 formed on the upper edge of the slot.
The other ends of the rollers 21 and 22 are supported by the winding shafts 41 and 42 which are journalled within the bearing members 43 and 44 secured to the outer side of one of the side frame members 10 by means of screws 45. These shafts 41 and 42 have handles'47 and 48, respectively, secured to the outer ends thereof by means of the screws 49 and the bearings 43 and 44 are provided at their inner ends with recesses adapted to receive the ratchet wheels 51 and 52, respectively. These ratchet wheels are secured to the shafts and the rotation thereof is controlled by the detents 53 and 54 which are pivoted on the pins 55 within slots 56 formed in the upper sides of the bearing members. These detents have handles 57 adapted to be manually engaged by the operator and they normally rest by gravity on the teeth of the ratchet wheels.
Each of the shafts 41 and 42 carries at its inner end a block 60 of rectangular cross section which is provided with a slot 61 in axial alinement with the connected shaft. Each block 60 and the slot 61 therein is adapted to be engaged by a bracket member 62 secured to the end of the adjacent roller 21 or 22. Each bracket 62 is somewhat. Z-shaped in cross section and is provided with a central web 62 and oppositely directed end flanges 62 and 62 When the web 62 of the bracket passes into engage ment with the slot 61, the flanges 62 and 62 are adapted to overlie and contact with the opposite parallel surfaces of the block 60 at the end of the slot 61. The bracket 62 is located with its center on the longitudinal axis of the connected roller and the block 60 has its axis coincident with the axis of the connected shaft, so that this arrangement serves to hold the roller in alinenient with the shaft. The side walls of the slot 61 are tapered outwardly, as shown at 6-1 to permit the convenient insertion of the bracket 62. This is done with the roller in an inclined position with the other end thereof adjacent the end of the opposite side frame. After the bracket 62 has passed into engagement with the slot 61, the trunnion 30 can be swung into'the opposite slot 31 and passed into engagement with the notch 33 in the latch 33 which can be manually elevated against the spring 36 to permit this operation. In this way both of the rollers are detachably mounted in the frame of the machine and can be readily withdrawn therefrom to permit the insertion of new rollers containing new rolls of the impression sheet 20. I
In using the device, one end of the sheet 20 which is originally wound on the roller 21 is carried through the slots 16 and 17 over the table 11 and the end thereof is attached to the roller 22. The pawl 53 can then be elevated to permit the free rotation of the ratchet wheel 51 and the lever 48 can be operated to wind a portion of the impression sheeton the roller 22. When the impression sheet is stretched taut upon the table 11, it can be maintained in this condition by means of the pawls 53 and 54. These pawls are directed in opposite directions from their pivots 55 and the teeth of the ratchet wheels 51 and 52 are correspondingly oppositely inclined so that the pawl 53 is adapted to prevent the rotation of the ratchet wheel 51 in a clockwise direction, as viewed in Fig. 2, while the pawl 54 is adapted to prevent rotation of the ratchet wheel 52 in an anti-clockwise direction, as
viewed in Fig. 2. In this way the ratchet wheels can both be located to maintain the impression sheet in the desired taut position on the table to form a copy of the written or typewritten matter. In using the apparatus, the impression sheet 20 is first moistened with a sponge or the like and the typewritten sheet or other matter to be certain embodiment of the invention for purposes of illustration, it will be understood that it may be constructed in various other forms without departing from the scope of the appended claims.

2. In combination, a supporting table, side frame members supporting said table, means mounted at the ends of said table for moving and adjusting an impression sheet on said table, a movable member adapted to rest 011 said sheet beyond and adjacent the end of said table, and means associated with said movable member for positioning a sheet of paper on said impression sheet.
3. In a copying machine, a table, supporting means therefor, a roller carried by said means, a shaft adapted to actuate said roller, a member carried by the end of said shaft and having a transverse slot in the end face thereof, and a bracket attached to the end of said roller for engaging said slot.
4. In a copying machine, a table, supporting means therefor, a roller carried by said means, a shaft adapted to actuate said roller, a member carried by the end of said shaft and having a transverse slot in the end face thereof, and a bracket attached to the end of said roller for engaging said slot, said bracket having transverse parts adapted to coact with the end surfaces of said slotted members at the end of said slot.
5. In a copying machine, a table, supporting means therefor, a roller carried by said means, a shaft adapted to actuate said roller, a member secured to the end of said shaft and having transverse grooves in the end face thereof, the lateral walls of said groove being tapered outwardly, and a plate seated in the end of said roller and adapted to engage said groove.

In a copying machine, a table, supporting means therefor, a roller carried by said means, a shaft adapted to actuate said roller, a member secured to the end of said shaft and having transverse grooves in the end face thereof, the lateral walls of said groove being tapered outwardly, and a plate seated in the end of said roller and adapted to engage said groove, the ends of said plate being bent transversely to engage the surfaces of said member at the ends of said slot.
7. In a copying machine, side-frame members, a table supported thereby, a roller adapted to extend between said side frame members on one side of said table, a driving shaft journalled in one of said side frame tachable connection between one end of said roller and said shaft, the side frame member opposite said shaft being provided with a slot, a trunnion secured to the other end of said roller and .detachably engaging said slot, and means for detachably holding said trunnion in alinement with said shaft.
9. In a copying machine, side-frame members, a table supported thereby, a roller adapted to extend between said side frame members 011 one side of said table, a driving shaft journalled in one of said side frame members, means for forming a detachable connection between one end of said roller and said shaft, the side frame member opposite said shaft being provided with a slot, a trunnion secured to the other end of said roller and detachably engaging said slot, and a pivoted latch member pivoted on said slotted'side frame member and adapted to hold said trunnion in alinement with said shaft.
10. In a copying machine, side-frame members, a table supported thereby, a roller adapted to extend between said side frameslotted side frame member and adapted to i hold said trunnion in alinement with said shaft, and means connected to said slotted side frame members for normally holding said latch member in engagement with said trunnion.
