To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. PINOK- NEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Ore on,-have invented 'a new and useful Was ing Machine, of
closed compartment which forms a lubri-- cant reservoir for these mechanisms.
Second. The construction of a 'machine in which the cylinder can only be stopped when. its door is uppermost.
Third. The construction of an exceedingly simple and mechamsm.
Fourth. The elimination of jumping and jerking in operating the reversing movement.
Fifth. The production of an extremal noiseless machine. Sixth. The production of a washin machine cylinder whose maximum s so will be in the center of its travel and aving a gradual retarding and acceleration of speed at the end and beginning of each rotation. I accomplish these results in the manner set forth in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the gear box with a portion cut away in section through the driving gears. Referring in detail to the drawings 1 have constructed my device of a woo en cylinder 20 ha' r-g a removable door 21 which isheld close by the latches 22. Inside of this compartment near one side of the door 37 is placed a 70 burner 38 and a hot water coil 39 whose lower end 40 connects withthe bottom of the .water container 27, and. whose upper end 41 opens into the water container 27 some distance up on its side.

Loosely mounted on the shaft 53 is a pin- 1% ion 57 provided with a bushing 58. Clutch aws 59 are formed on the side of the pinion 57 which is held in position on the shaft 53 by the collar 60 on the shaft 53. A in 61 secures the shaft 53 within the mom or 105 49;. the arm 70 to rise and permit the flange 64 to pass under same-in other words, to allow the clutch jaws 65 to be moved into or out of engagement with the jaws 59.
In order to enable the clutch 62 to be freely moved along the shaft 53 I have formed thereon a rack consisting of the I teeth 74 which are turned on the clutch member 62. J ournaling in the bearing 75 is a shaft 76 on whose inner end is pinned asegment gear 77 which meshes with the rack teeth 74. On the outer end or the shaft 76 I have pinned a cylinder control lever. 78 whoseihandle 79 projects above the top 80 of the machine.
Projecting from a boss on the inside of the back 48 is a stud 84 on which is mounted a segment gear 85 which meshes with the pinion 57. The cap 86 holds the segment gear 85 in place by means of the screw 87.
Projecting from the boss 88 on the front of the back 48 is a stud 89 upon which is mounted a bevel gear 90 which is held in place by the cap 91 and the screw 92. A boss 93 on the web of the gear 90 carries a crank pin 94 on which the connecting rod 95 is secured by means of the cotter 96. The connecting rod 95 is joined at its opposite end to the segment gear 85 by means of the crank pin 97 on which it is secured by means of the cotter 98.
On the side 99 I have provided a bearing 100 in which journals the horizontal shaft 101 whose opposite end is supported by the bearing 102 mounted on the back 48. The bevel pinion 103 is pinned on the end of the shaft 101 and meshes with the gear 90. A worm wheel 104 is also pinned on the shaft 101 and drives same. A worm 105 meshes with the worm wheel 104 and is carried by the shaft 106 which is driven by a suitable motor. I
On the shaft 101 are loosely placed the two miter gears 115 on whose sides are placed the clutch jaws 116 which may engage thejaws 117 of the sliding clutch memher 118 goined by the spline 119 to the shaft menses It is evident that in the operation of a machine equipped with my device that the clutch member 62 can only be shifted when the cam lobe 73 is uppermost, and since the position of the door 21 with relation to the lobe 73 does not change, then the cylinder 20 can only be stopped when the door is up.
"What I claim is:
1. In a washing machine, a cylinder provided with a door on one side, and means for unclutching the cylinder with the door uppermost consisting of a shaft for driving said cylinder, a loose pinion on said shaft, a sliding clutch member on said shaft adapted to lock said pinion to said shaft, said clutch member having a flange formed on its outside and having circular gear teeth cut around said clutch member, a segment gear meshing with said circular teeth, a hand lever adapted to rotate said se ent gear, a pairof arms hinged to a stationary sup port, one of said arms on agin said flange at one of its sides and t e ot er arm engaging the side of said pinion and ridin on its hub, and a cam lobe on the hub c said pinion adapted to raise said arms and permit said clutch member to be moved when the door of the cylinder is uppermost.
'2. In a washing machine, a cylinder pro vided with a door on one side, and means for unclutching the cylinder with the door uppermost consisting of a shaft for driving said cylinder, a loose pinion'on said shaft, a sliding clutch member on said shaft adapted to lock said pinion to said shaft, said clutch member having a flange formed on its outside, a pair of arms hinged to a stationary support, one of said arms engaging the clutch flange at one of its sides and the other arm engaging the side of said inion and riding on its hub, and a cam lo e on the hub of said pinion adapted to raisesaid arms and permit said clutch member to be moved when the door of the cylinder is uppermost.
